2. How many people are hungry in Canada?
More than 4 million Canadians live
in food-insecure households
This means that they don’t always know if they
will have enough food every day for everyone
in the house
841,191 CANADIANS need to use a
food bank every month
3. Why are people hungry in Canada?
There are lots of reason that people can’t
afford to buy food regularly:
Lost their job
Have a job that doesn’t pay enough
Too sick to work
An accident
4. Using a Food Bank in Ontario
In 2014 374,698 people helped by food
banks in March
35% were children!
That’s 131,144 kids that needed help from a
food bank in Ontario!!!
5. The Food Bank at Eden
If people need help getting food in western
Mississauga they can come to the Food
Bank at Eden to receive a variety of food!
In 2014 we served around 400 families
every month
6. How do we give away food?
In 2014 485,562 lbs of food was donated to
us from the community!
Plus, with the money the community
donated we bought 23,352 lbs of food!
Fresh food like:
Milk

9. How much food do we give?
Each person received about 32 lbs of food
per visit (that was 4lbs more than 2013!)
Each family receives a quantity and variety
of food to make healthy, nutritious meals for
7 – 10 days
On average, our Food Bank members spend
73% of their income on rent and utilities
many have to choose between a roof over
their head or food for their families because
they cannot afford both
10. How else do we help?
Free COOKING CLASSES for people who use
our Food Bank!
They learn how to cook healthy food without
having to spend a lot of money!
11. How else do we help?
Our Fresh Produce Box helps EVERYONE
access fruits and vegetables affordably!
12. How can YOU make a difference?
If you buy $10 worth of FOOD the food bank
will distribute $10 worth of food to hungry
families in our community
If you DONATE $10 to the food bank, they
can acquire and distribute up to $100 worth
of food to people in need
Current average is about $45 worth of food
for every $10 donated
13. How is that possible???
As a food bank, Eden has a greater
purchasing power than the average person
When purchasing food, the food bank
connects directly with food distributers such
as the Ontario Food Terminal and…
Donated products help to lower the cost
Eden is given a discount for being a food
bank
Eden buys products in bulk and may also be
given discounts for such large purchases
14. PEANUT BUTTER EXAMPLE
Peanut butter is a staple item that is commonly
needed at food banks, however, peanut butter
is expensive (about $5.00 per jar)
When the Food Bank at Eden purchases peanut
butter they buy 2 whole skids and they are
given:
A discount for being a food bank
Bulk purchase discount
Some peanut butter is donated
SO… one jar of peanut butter costs the Food
Bank at Eden $0.50 instead of $5.00!!!
