Designing an ICON-Module to support writing ability in
writing descriptive text.
(a develpment research using multimedia based on contextual teaching and learning approach at
the eight grade students of SMP acedemic year 2014/2015)
ABSTRACT
This research will conduct to: (1) describe the students need to improve writing ability in writing
descriptive text, (2) produce the design of ICON-module using contextual teaching material for
teaching descriptive text, (3) develop the construct of ICON-module using contextual teaching
material for teaching descriptive text, (4) describe the result of the implementation ICON-module
using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text, (5), describe the
result of the evaluation ICON-module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for
teaching descriptive text.
This research will use development research to design a particular product namely ICON-Module
(Interactive and Contextual Module) and to test its effectiveness. The stages consist of five: (1)
analysis, (2) design, (3) develop, (4) implement, (5) evaluation. The subject of the research will be
the students of SMP class VII.
The main finding of the research will be: (1) the ICON-Module will significantly contribute to the
improvement of English competency of SMA class VII, focus on writing skill, (2) the ICON-
Module produce for its learning process (lesson plan, material, evaluation tool) are effectively able
to demonstrate optimal result, (3) the ICON-Module meet the practical and effective criteria,
therefore students will be interesting in learning English

A. Background
As we know that, language is something crucial in human life. Language is one of the
most important things in communication and it is used as a tool of communication among the
nations in all over the world. As an international language, English is the most widely used
language in the world. It shows that English is very important to be learned by the students for
international communication.
In Indonesia, English considered as the first foreign language and taught formally from
elementary school up to the university level. There are four skills had to be mastered in English
language: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. As a part of language skill, writing is very
important to support communication among human being. Language is not only spoken, but also
written. It is a basic language skill, just as important as speaking, listening, and reading. So that,
writing must be taught for student.
Writing has a higher status than speaking because almost every body can speak but only
a few people can write. We must write with correct grammar. We organize what we write into
sentences and paragraphs. We use more formal vocabulary and we do not use slang. It demands us
to have good ability in writing sentences, especially to compose text correctly.
Moreover, writing as a language production is consider as a difficult subject for students.
Infact, the students have many ideas or experience but they can not explain or describe into the
written form. Most of students do writing activity to fullfill the requirement of writing assigment,
and also they only follow the instruction given by their teachers. If the teachers do not give them
any tasks to do such as doing exercise, taking a note, making summary, or writing a paragraph, the
students will do nothing to improve their writing skill. This indicates that students are not
interested in their writing.
Teach writing is not an easy job, but it is a necessary one. Without these skill the students
will have difficulties in develop other skill. It can be very rewarding when we see our student’
progress and know that we have helped to make it happen.
In order to make teaching writing successfully, some factors such as; quality of the
teacher, students’ interest and motivation, the teaching method, teaching materials, etc have to be
considered. Materials become very important in the education field. Teachers need to choose
appropriate, engaging and interesting materials for students.
Unfortunately, there are mistakes of teaching in the class which cause students can not
understand writing material fully. One of them, mistake of descriptive text teaching. Learning of
descriptive text writing still use conventional methods and materials. Teacher becomes center of
study. Students are less involved in learning process. The materials are unfamiliar and difficult so
that students feel bored. Teachers need creativity for design their own material to increase students
learning motivation.
For that reason, an English teacher should think about materials and techniques that is
hoped will help the students in mastering writing skill. In this research, the materials will be
designed based on contextual approach, because the descriptive text material will be taken from
students real-life environment. As Junior high school students they need the material which easy
to understand and using contextual approach will appropriate in their age. Contextual approach
will help them to start thinking realistic and critical because the material will be connected to their
real word situation. The researcher believe that by designing MIC module using multimedia and
contextual approach will help students in writing descriptive text.
B. Researchproblem
The problem can be stated as follows:
1. What kind of teaching materials do the students need to improve writing ability in
writing descriptive text?
2. How is the design of ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach
for teaching descriptive text?
3. How is the construct of ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning
approach for teaching descriptive text?
4. How is the result of the implementation ICON module using Contextual Teaching and
Learning approach for teaching descriptive text?
5. How is the result of the evaluation ICON module using Contextual Teaching and
Learning approach for teaching descriptive text?
C. Purpose
In this research, the researcher only focus to answer the question no 1,2, and 3.
Based on the problem above, the aims of this study are as follows:
1. To describe the students need to improve writing ability in writing descriptive text.
2. To produce the design of ICON module using contextual teaching material for teaching
descriptive text.
3. To develop the construct of ICON module using contextual teaching material for
teaching descriptive text.
4. To describe the result of the implementation ICON module using Contextual Teaching
and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text?
5. To describe the result of the evaluation ICON module using Contextual Teaching and
Learning approach for teaching descriptive text?
D. Hyphotetical model
The final product for this research is an ICON Module. The researcher will conduct the
module using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Power Point. The content of the product, such
as pictures, texts and exercise for the students. The pictures will be taken by researcher and
from the internet. The product is also designed in a form of soft file. The module will
consist of tittle, instruction, material, exercise, evaluation and conclusion. See the
prototype in appendix to be more clear.
E. Significance
This study is important for five reasons as follows:
1. For the students
a. Using ICON modul will make students interesting in learning English especially
in writing descriptive text.
b. Students can use interactive modul to make them easily understand the material.
2. For the teacher
a. Teacher can use the product of this study as a tool or media when they want to
improve their ability in teaching descriptive text.
b. Teacher will get new innovative materials in enhancing their teaching method.
Their materials will definitely affect the teaching process quality. In short, the
teachers’ materials will help their students in achieving the best result.
3. For the school
The product of this study can be used to improve teaching and learning process.
4. For the writer
The writer can use this product to improve his writing skill especially in write
descriptive text
5. For the readers
It hopes can give more information and contributes the knowledge.
F. Scope of Research
1. Terminology
To avoid ambiguity and misunderstanding, the researcher difine the terminology as
follow:
a. Design
Designing materials is an activity in create the materials to teach the students in order to
support teaching learning process.
b. Module
Module is a unit of learning materials designed specifically so that it can be studied by
learners independently. It is a complete learning program, arranged systematically,
referring to the learning objectives are clear and measurable. Module contains learning
objectives, materials and activities to achieve the goals and means of evaluation of the
achievement of learning objectives.
c. Descriptive text
It is a kind of genre that social function to describe a particular person, place, or thing.
Descriptive text is a text which say what a person or a thing is like. Description is used in
alls form of writing to create a vivid impression of a person, place, object or event.
d. ICON Module
ICON module is an abbreviation for interactive and contextual module.
e. Contextual
Contextual teaching and learning is an educational process that help student see meaning
in the academic subject with the context of their daily lives, that is, with the context of their
personal, social, and cultural circumstances.
f. Interactive
Interactive is two-way communication or more of components communication. The
process of interaction between teacher and students, between students and students, and
between students and their environment
2. Limitation
Regarding the background of the study above, this research focuses on the
developing a module using contextual teaching material to improve students’ writing
ability in writing descriptive text. The target of the users of the module are the teacher
and the eight grade students in the second semester of SMP. This module will suitable
for school who have good facilities like electricity, speaker and infocus.

Designing an icon module

  • 1. Designing an ICON-Module to support writing ability in writing descriptive text. (a develpment research using multimedia based on contextual teaching and learning approach at the eight grade students of SMP acedemic year 2014/2015) ABSTRACT This research will conduct to: (1) describe the students need to improve writing ability in writing descriptive text, (2) produce the design of ICON-module using contextual teaching material for teaching descriptive text, (3) develop the construct of ICON-module using contextual teaching material for teaching descriptive text, (4) describe the result of the implementation ICON-module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text, (5), describe the result of the evaluation ICON-module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text. This research will use development research to design a particular product namely ICON-Module (Interactive and Contextual Module) and to test its effectiveness. The stages consist of five: (1) analysis, (2) design, (3) develop, (4) implement, (5) evaluation. The subject of the research will be the students of SMP class VII. The main finding of the research will be: (1) the ICON-Module will significantly contribute to the improvement of English competency of SMA class VII, focus on writing skill, (2) the ICON- Module produce for its learning process (lesson plan, material, evaluation tool) are effectively able to demonstrate optimal result, (3) the ICON-Module meet the practical and effective criteria, therefore students will be interesting in learning English Key word: Development Research, ICON-Module, Descriptive Text, Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach.
  • 2. Designing an ICON-Module to support writing ability in writing descriptive text. Background As we know that, language is something crucial in human life. Language is one of the most important things in communication and it is used as a tool of communication among the nations in all over the world. As an international language, English is the most widely used language in the world. It shows that English is very important to be learned by the students for international communication. In Indonesia, English considered as the first foreign language and taught formally from elementary school up to the university level. There are four skills had to be mastered in English language: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. As a part of language skill, writing is very important to support communication among human being. Language is not only spoken, but also written. It is a basic language skill, just as important as speaking, listening, and reading. So that, writing must be taught for student. Writing has a higher status than speaking because almost every body can speak but only a few people can write. We must write with correct grammar. We organize what we write into sentences and paragraphs. We use more formal vocabulary and we do not use slang. It demands us to have good ability in writing sentences, especially to compose text correctly. Moreover, writing as a language production is consider as a difficult subject for students. Infact, the students have many ideas or experience but they can not explain or describe into the written form. Most of students do writing activity to fullfill the requirement of writing assigment, and also they only follow the instruction given by their teachers. If the teachers do not give them any tasks to do such as doing exercise, taking a note, making summary, or writing a paragraph, the students will do nothing to improve their writing skill. This indicates that students are not interested in their writing. Teach writing is not an easy job, but it is a necessary one. Without these skill the students will have difficulties in develop other skill. It can be very rewarding when we see our student’ progress and know that we have helped to make it happen. In order to make teaching writing successfully, some factors such as; quality of the teacher, students’ interest and motivation, the teaching method, teaching materials, etc have to be considered. Materials become very important in the education field. Teachers need to choose appropriate, engaging and interesting materials for students. Unfortunately, there are mistakes of teaching in the class which cause students can not understand writing material fully. One of them, mistake of descriptive text teaching. Learning of descriptive text writing still use conventional methods and materials. Teacher becomes center of study. Students are less involved in learning process. The materials are unfamiliar and difficult so that students feel bored. Teachers need creativity for design their own material to increase students learning motivation. For that reason, an English teacher should think about materials and techniques that is hoped will help the students in mastering writing skill. In this research, the materials will be designed based on contextual approach, because the descriptive text material will be taken from
  • 3. students real-life environment. As Junior high school students they need the material which easy to understand and using contextual approach will appropriate in their age. Contextual approach will help them to start thinking realistic and critical because the material will be connected to their real word situation. The researcher believe that by designing MIC module using multimedia and contextual approach will help students in writing descriptive text. B. Researchproblem The problem can be stated as follows: 1. What kind of teaching materials do the students need to improve writing ability in writing descriptive text? 2. How is the design of ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text? 3. How is the construct of ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text? 4. How is the result of the implementation ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text? 5. How is the result of the evaluation ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text? C. Purpose In this research, the researcher only focus to answer the question no 1,2, and 3. Based on the problem above, the aims of this study are as follows: 1. To describe the students need to improve writing ability in writing descriptive text. 2. To produce the design of ICON module using contextual teaching material for teaching descriptive text. 3. To develop the construct of ICON module using contextual teaching material for teaching descriptive text. 4. To describe the result of the implementation ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text? 5. To describe the result of the evaluation ICON module using Contextual Teaching and Learning approach for teaching descriptive text? D. Hyphotetical model The final product for this research is an ICON Module. The researcher will conduct the module using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Power Point. The content of the product, such as pictures, texts and exercise for the students. The pictures will be taken by researcher and from the internet. The product is also designed in a form of soft file. The module will consist of tittle, instruction, material, exercise, evaluation and conclusion. See the prototype in appendix to be more clear.
  • 4. E. Significance This study is important for five reasons as follows: 1. For the students a. Using ICON modul will make students interesting in learning English especially in writing descriptive text. b. Students can use interactive modul to make them easily understand the material. 2. For the teacher a. Teacher can use the product of this study as a tool or media when they want to improve their ability in teaching descriptive text. b. Teacher will get new innovative materials in enhancing their teaching method. Their materials will definitely affect the teaching process quality. In short, the teachers’ materials will help their students in achieving the best result. 3. For the school The product of this study can be used to improve teaching and learning process. 4. For the writer The writer can use this product to improve his writing skill especially in write descriptive text 5. For the readers It hopes can give more information and contributes the knowledge. F. Scope of Research 1. Terminology To avoid ambiguity and misunderstanding, the researcher difine the terminology as follow: a. Design Designing materials is an activity in create the materials to teach the students in order to support teaching learning process. b. Module Module is a unit of learning materials designed specifically so that it can be studied by learners independently. It is a complete learning program, arranged systematically, referring to the learning objectives are clear and measurable. Module contains learning objectives, materials and activities to achieve the goals and means of evaluation of the achievement of learning objectives. c. Descriptive text It is a kind of genre that social function to describe a particular person, place, or thing. Descriptive text is a text which say what a person or a thing is like. Description is used in alls form of writing to create a vivid impression of a person, place, object or event.
  • 5. d. ICON Module ICON module is an abbreviation for interactive and contextual module. e. Contextual Contextual teaching and learning is an educational process that help student see meaning in the academic subject with the context of their daily lives, that is, with the context of their personal, social, and cultural circumstances. f. Interactive Interactive is two-way communication or more of components communication. The process of interaction between teacher and students, between students and students, and between students and their environment 2. Limitation Regarding the background of the study above, this research focuses on the developing a module using contextual teaching material to improve students’ writing ability in writing descriptive text. The target of the users of the module are the teacher and the eight grade students in the second semester of SMP. This module will suitable for school who have good facilities like electricity, speaker and infocus.
