Dear Readers,
The quality that marks this issue of ‘Student Travel
Chronicle’ is a testimony to the maturity of the young minds
who joined forces to enthusiastically shape and provide
substance to its form. For this, a word of appreciation is due
to the parents, whose efforts were the precursors to the
students’ commendable effort.
G D Goenka Public School, Rudrapur, is committed to creating
the vital link between learning in the classroom and the equally
important topical learning from the school of life outside
the classroom. The pages that follow are representative
of the aim of G D Goenka Public School, Rudrapur, which
is to take teaching beyond the walls of the classroom
into the freedom of outward exploration and creativity.
There were many outcomes from this intensive 5 day journey
to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, which included visits to
Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jaislamer Fort,
Patwaon Ki Haveli, Kuldhara Village, Gadi Sagar Lake and
the Sam Dunes of the Thar Desert, finally culminating in
the awards ceremony for the prize-winning students at the
end of this journey of excitement. All this, and much more
is yours to discover as the students help you re-live the
excitement of their experience in the pages ahead - replete
with photographs and one-liners, memories and impressions.

01. Our Journey
Two jewels in a crown called Rajasthan!
During the British Raj, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer were the
seats of a princely state of the same names. Following the
independence of India in 1947, these cities acceded into
the dominion of India. These two cities are representative
of a culture and people unlike anywhere else in India. A
trip to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer is truly an experience of a
lifetime.
T
he grandeur, might and royalty attached to these
two beautiful cities of Rajasthan are evident in the
many forts and palaces that dot the cities and form
its landscape, thus speaking volumes of a rich history
that envelopes each city.
With the glorious Mehrangarh Fort towering over its blue
houses, Jodhpur makes for a splendid picture and is often
referred to as the “Blue City”. The city enjoys bright and
sunny weather all year round, earning it the nick name
“Sun City“ as well.
Jaisalmer is the quintessential desert town rising out of
the arid Thar. One of India’s most popular destinations,
Jaisalmer is a shopper’s haven and a shutterbug’s delight.
The villagers dressed in voluminous bright clothing and
the exquisite yellow sandstone architecture of the city
makes you feel like you have travelled back in time.
Jodhpur and
Jaisalmer are
representative of a
culture and people
unlike anywhere
else in India.

Places to
VISIT
The first day of our trip started on the train at 10:10 p.m.
The train engine developed a snag, which resulted in a
five-hour delay, making our travel a little inconvenient.
Our second day on the train was very refreshing. We woke
up and had our breakfast at 11:00 a.m. Then the Journey
Mentors gave us some refreshments. We were a little bored,
but luckily one of our teachers, Nitin Sir, came to entertain
us. We reached Jodhpur at 9 p.m. and travelled to our hotel
right after finishing our dinner.

Kuldhara Village
After a good rest in the night, we proceeded to Jaisalmer.
After travelling for over six hours, we reached our camping
site. We went for a camel ride and later danced with the
local performers. After a fantastic but tiring visit to Kuldhara
Village and Jaisalmer Fort, we went on a shopping spree
in the street of Patwon Ki Haveli, followed by our visit to
the attractive Gadi Sagar lake. After all this, we went back
to the desert safari to enjoy the bonfire. We sang songs,
danced and enjoyed ourselves. We then went to the railway
station to catch our train back home.

A
ny visit to Rajasthan is incomplete without visiting
the sand dunes of Jaisalmer. Sam, a small village
on the outskirts of Jaisalmer that has a truly
magnificent stretch of sweeping sand dunes of the Great
Thar.
Thar is a subtropical desert land located in the north-
western part of the Indian subcontinent. The diversified
habitat and beautiful ecosystem of the desert offer many
tourist attractions in the region. Thar is one of the most
heavily populated desert areas in the world and about
40% of the total population of Rajasthan lives in the Thar
Desert region. The Thar region is mainly inhabited by the
Bishnois, Bhils, Minas, Lohars, Garasians, Sahariyas and
Rabaris. They live in the desert villages of Khuri, Kanoi,
Sattasar and the nearby sand dunes. Most of the people
own camels and largely depend on tourism for their
livelihood.
A camel ride is undoubtedly the best way to explore the
desert region and its culture. Even better is the thrilling
jeep safari, specially meant for those who love speed.

It is said that a desert is a place without expectations
but we had a great time during the desert safari. We did
camel rides and had adventures on our jeep expedition.
The sunset was excellent. We watched the sky turn
orange and it appeared as if the sand was shining. On our
way back to the camp, we had a camel race and a photo
shoot along with the camels, which was very exciting.
We were now looking forward to the next day’s jeep safari.
Our teachers and Journey Mentors guided us during the
jeep safari. The safari was delightful though parts of it
were scary. Overall, it was a real adventure. After the jeep
safari, we had a campfire, had snacks and danced to the
music.
We learnt a lot about life on our journey as well. As in every
journey, there are ups and downs, the challenge is how we
can remove the negativity and focus on the positives. Our
team enjoyed and learnt a lot during the desert safari.
Riding high on camel back made us feel like a royalty

ajasthan is every traveller’s delight. Tourists from
all over the world flock to this state to get a glimpse
of its quintessential beauty and its colourful and
vibrant culture. Things to do and see in Rajasthan are
abundant. The state is dotted with formidable palaces
and monuments that are resonant of its incredible history,
the rulers who lived there and their interest in architecture.
The terrain is diverse and one gets to see everything from
desert and barren fields to mountains, dense forests and
lakes.
Travelling to Rajasthan is a thrilling experience. The
people of Rajasthan are extremely hospitable. One
can observe that the dryness and barrenness of their
surroundings has taught them the value of colours and
this reflects in their bright colourful costumes, paintings
and handicrafts.

The next morning we went to the haunted Kuldhara
Village. Next, we visited the beautiful Jaisalmer Fort. The
fort was massive. The fort had shops and temples. We
then went to Gadi Sagar to enjoy another pretty sunset.
We then returned to the desert and went for a safari. It
was a crazy experience followed by a bonfire at the camp.
Rajasthan has so much to offer that we want to go back
and travel more in order to explore its history and culture
at length. We loved everything including the local people,
cuisine, little pieces of jewellery, forts, and palaces.
Everyone should visit this extraordinary land.
Every journey teaches us lessons. It helps us see what
is going around us and what the world is actually like.
We explored the mysterious attractions of the state of
Rajasthan. We first went to the famous Mehrangarh Fort,
which has seven massive gates. From here we could see
the beautiful blue houses. We visited the museum that
showcases some great exhibits. We interacted with the
local people and indulged in some shopping.
We then went to Jaisalmer from Jodhpur. Here we went
straight to the desert camp, which was located on the
sand dunes of the Thar desert. We enjoyed a welcome
drink and went for a camel ride.
Fun
We were excited to visit Umaid Bhawan Palace and closely saw how the Jodhpur
royals live

04.Forts of Rajasthan
Impressive and Invincible
T
he glory and power of the kingdoms of Rajasthan
are evident in the impressive and invincible forts
of Rajasthan. These glorious forts are undoubtedly
among the major tourist attractions of the state. There
are a total of six hill-forts in Rajasthan, and each fort is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. The forts were built between
the 5th and 18th centuries on the Aravalli range. The six
famous hill forts are Chittorgarh Fort, Kumbhalgarh Fort,
Ranthambore Fort, Gagron Fort, Amber Fort and Jaisalmer
Fort.
Described by English writer Rudyard Kipling as “the
creation of angels, fairies and giants”, the Mehrangarh
Fort is the most majestic of Rajasthan’s forts. The royal

museum. It is also known as the invincible fort as no one
has ever been able to capture it. The Jaisalmer Fort is
not a mere monument but a living fort where people still
reside. The golden shade of this mega structure merges
with the golden hues of the desert and gives it a fairytale
look. The architecture is a fusion of Rajput and Islamic
features.

Places toVISIT
The Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most magnificent
and impressive forts in India. It was built in the year
1549 by the Rathore ruler of Jodhpur, Rao Jodha. It
is believed to be one of the most well maintained
forts in India.
Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 AD by Rajput King
Rao Jodha. It covers an area of twelve hundred
acres, making it the second-largest fort in Rajasthan. It
sits atop a hill and is known for its distinct architecture.
The main attractions include a museum and a series
of palaces. In the museum, you can find all kinds of
weapons, palanquins, costumes, paintings, howdahs and
turbans. The most interesting aspect of the museum was
its architecture.
The fort has a number of palaces such as the Phool
Mahal, Moti Mahal and Sheesh Mahal.
The largest room in the fort is Moti Mahal. It has a throne
called Srinagar Chowki. The king used to sit on this
throne and meet his visitors. The fort also has temples.
Chamunda Temple is the one we visited. This temple is
dedicated to Goddess Durga. We also enjoyed the cultural
performances that were taking place at various locations
inside the fort.
The forts of Rajasthan are both enigmatic and majestic.
Their architecture is what separates them from other
Indian forts. The outermost part of the fort is occupied by
the army. It also has a residence area for the Brahmins.
As you stroll
through the
narrow lanes of its
markets, you will

05.Shopping in Jaisalmer
A shoppers’ paradise
R
ajasthan is one state that has been able to preserve
its cultural and traditional art and craft forms in a
manner that is incomparable with any other place
in India. It is a fantastic destination for shopping. It offers
something for everyone. Be it jewellery, pottery, leather
items, paintings, textiles or furniture, the things on offer in
Rajasthan are simply irresistible. Every city of Rajasthan
has something unique and exclusive on display for its
shoppers.
The Golden City, Jaisalmer is an exciting place for
shopping. As you stroll through the narrow lanes of its
markets, you will be engulfed by the variety of clothes
and handicrafts it has on offer. It is best known for its
embroidery, mirror work, rugs, blankets and finely-cut
antiques. Puppets and jutties (hand-made leather shoes)
are well worth buying too. You will also find beautiful
fabrics, woven jackets, camel-leather items and wooden
boxes. You will find a colourful range of the popular
bandhini (tie-and-dye) fabrics as well. Some of the major
shopping places in Jaisalmer are the markets within the
fort, Sadar Bazaar, Bhatia Bazaar, Gandhi Darshan and
Seema Gram.
STC RAJASTHAN SPD 14
15
Shopping in Jaisalmer was very interesting as the
market had almost everything including handicrafts,
paintings, wooden items, gems, jewellery, and clothes. We
saw many local handicraft items and different designs.
The look of the markets is unique because of the use
of bright colours. The miniature art stole our hearts.
We saw detailed paintings that were made with a brush
comprising of a single strand of hair. Then there were
the beautiful handmade bags made up of real leather.
There were beautiful diaries with pages made entirely
of hand-made paper. The mirror-work on the amazingly
handcrafted slippers, clothes, and diaries completely
justify their prices.
We feel that everyone should visit the local markets
in Jaisalmer because of their vibrant atmosphere, and
diverse and colourful Rajasthani handicrafts.
In these markets, you will notice that the shopkeepers
are very kind and polite and share a sense of unity among
themselves. They also know basic English in order to
converse with foreign customers. All this brings a very
different kind of energy to their markets and gave us a
chance to learn about Rajasthan.
Fun

  • 6. 01. Our Journey Two jewels in a crown called Rajasthan! During the British Raj, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer were the seats of a princely state of the same names. Following the independence of India in 1947, these cities acceded into the dominion of India. These two cities are representative of a culture and people unlike anywhere else in India. A trip to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer is truly an experience of a lifetime. T he grandeur, might and royalty attached to these two beautiful cities of Rajasthan are evident in the many forts and palaces that dot the cities and form its landscape, thus speaking volumes of a rich history that envelopes each city. With the glorious Mehrangarh Fort towering over its blue houses, Jodhpur makes for a splendid picture and is often referred to as the “Blue City”. The city enjoys bright and sunny weather all year round, earning it the nick name “Sun City“ as well. Jaisalmer is the quintessential desert town rising out of the arid Thar. One of India’s most popular destinations, Jaisalmer is a shopper’s haven and a shutterbug’s delight. The villagers dressed in voluminous bright clothing and the exquisite yellow sandstone architecture of the city makes you feel like you have travelled back in time. Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are representative of a culture and people unlike anywhere else in India. 6 STC RAJASTHAN SPD
  • 7. Places to VISIT The first day of our trip started on the train at 10:10 p.m. The train engine developed a snag, which resulted in a five-hour delay, making our travel a little inconvenient. Our second day on the train was very refreshing. We woke up and had our breakfast at 11:00 a.m. Then the Journey Mentors gave us some refreshments. We were a little bored, but luckily one of our teachers, Nitin Sir, came to entertain us. We reached Jodhpur at 9 p.m. and travelled to our hotel right after finishing our dinner. Fun We worked as a team and shared our experiences through EdTerra’s Travel Journalists Program Written & Photographed by: Arshia, Divija, Ishmeet, Khushkaran, Priyanshu and Vaibhavi Fun We were amazed to visit the Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum, which exhibits many antique belongings of the Maharaja and the royal family We felt goosebumps to see the imprints of cannonball attacks left by the armies of Jaipur towards the second gate of Mehrangarh Fort 7 STC RAJASTHAN SPD Umaid Bhawan Mehrangarh Fort Jaisalmer Fort Kuldhara Village After a good rest in the night, we proceeded to Jaisalmer. After travelling for over six hours, we reached our camping site. We went for a camel ride and later danced with the local performers. After a fantastic but tiring visit to Kuldhara Village and Jaisalmer Fort, we went on a shopping spree in the street of Patwon Ki Haveli, followed by our visit to the attractive Gadi Sagar lake. After all this, we went back to the desert safari to enjoy the bonfire. We sang songs, danced and enjoyed ourselves. We then went to the railway station to catch our train back home.

A visit to Rajasthan is incomplete without a desert safari experience in the sparkling sand dunes of Jaisalmer A ny visit to Rajasthan is incomplete without visiting the sand dunes of Jaisalmer. Sam, a small village on the outskirts of Jaisalmer that has a truly magnificent stretch of sweeping sand dunes of the Great Thar. Thar is a subtropical desert land located in the north- western part of the Indian subcontinent. The diversified habitat and beautiful ecosystem of the desert offer many tourist attractions in the region. Thar is one of the most heavily populated desert areas in the world and about 40% of the total population of Rajasthan lives in the Thar Desert region. The Thar region is mainly inhabited by the Bishnois, Bhils, Minas, Lohars, Garasians, Sahariyas and Rabaris. They live in the desert villages of Khuri, Kanoi, Sattasar and the nearby sand dunes. Most of the people own camels and largely depend on tourism for their livelihood. A camel ride is undoubtedly the best way to explore the desert region and its culture. Even better is the thrilling jeep safari, specially meant for those who love speed. Desert Safari A ride to remember
  • 9. Written & Photographed by: Aviral, Avni, Harshveer, Pakhi, Rashul, Tanya & Yuvraj It is said that a desert is a place without expectations but we had a great time during the desert safari. We did camel rides and had adventures on our jeep expedition. The sunset was excellent. We watched the sky turn orange and it appeared as if the sand was shining. On our way back to the camp, we had a camel race and a photo shoot along with the camels, which was very exciting. We were now looking forward to the next day’s jeep safari. Our teachers and Journey Mentors guided us during the jeep safari. The safari was delightful though parts of it were scary. Overall, it was a real adventure. After the jeep safari, we had a campfire, had snacks and danced to the music. We learnt a lot about life on our journey as well. As in every journey, there are ups and downs, the challenge is how we can remove the negativity and focus on the positives. Our team enjoyed and learnt a lot during the desert safari. Riding high on camel back made us feel like a royalty Fun Fun Fun We had a great time bonding with each other on the way to the desert safari We discovered that India and the Thar Desert have the largest population of dromedary or one-humped camels in Asia Khamma Ghani STC RAJASTHAN SPD 9 After leaving Rajasthan’s busy cities, the desert safari offered us a chance to enjoy the expansive landscape of the desert

  • 11. Written & Photographed by: Agrima, Darshpreet, Ishaan, Paras, Sanskriti, Shomya, Vanshveer & Yugraj The next morning we went to the haunted Kuldhara Village. Next, we visited the beautiful Jaisalmer Fort. The fort was massive. The fort had shops and temples. We then went to Gadi Sagar to enjoy another pretty sunset. We then returned to the desert and went for a safari. It was a crazy experience followed by a bonfire at the camp. Rajasthan has so much to offer that we want to go back and travel more in order to explore its history and culture at length. We loved everything including the local people, cuisine, little pieces of jewellery, forts, and palaces. Everyone should visit this extraordinary land. Every journey teaches us lessons. It helps us see what is going around us and what the world is actually like. We explored the mysterious attractions of the state of Rajasthan. We first went to the famous Mehrangarh Fort, which has seven massive gates. From here we could see the beautiful blue houses. We visited the museum that showcases some great exhibits. We interacted with the local people and indulged in some shopping. We then went to Jaisalmer from Jodhpur. Here we went straight to the desert camp, which was located on the sand dunes of the Thar desert. We enjoyed a welcome drink and went for a camel ride. Fun We were excited to visit Umaid Bhawan Palace and closely saw how the Jodhpur royals live Fun We learnt that a state promotes tourism not only through advertisements but also by making innovative souvenirs available The jeep and camel safaris were the most exciting parts of our Journey. The glory and power of the Kingdoms of Rajasthan are evident in the massive and magnificent forts of Rajasthan 04.Forts of Rajasthan Impressive and Invincible T he glory and power of the kingdoms of Rajasthan are evident in the impressive and invincible forts of Rajasthan. These glorious forts are undoubtedly among the major tourist attractions of the state. There are a total of six hill-forts in Rajasthan, and each fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The forts were built between the 5th and 18th centuries on the Aravalli range. The six famous hill forts are Chittorgarh Fort, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Ranthambore Fort, Gagron Fort, Amber Fort and Jaisalmer Fort. Described by English writer Rudyard Kipling as “the creation of angels, fairies and giants”, the Mehrangarh Fort is the most majestic of Rajasthan’s forts. The royal apartmentswithinthefortnowformpartofanoutstanding museum. It is also known as the invincible fort as no one has ever been able to capture it. The Jaisalmer Fort is not a mere monument but a living fort where people still reside. The golden shade of this mega structure merges with the golden hues of the desert and gives it a fairytale look. The architecture is a fusion of Rajput and Islamic features. 12 STC RAJASTHAN SPD

STC RAJASTHAN SPD 13 Mehrangarh Fort Written & Photographed by: Ashwina, Jaibeer, Kavya, Keerat,Mohit,Sajal&Vinayaka Fun Fun We were surprised to know that Mehrangarh Fort is home to two ancient temples We felt like proud natives to learn that great British writer Rudyard Kipling called the colossal proportions of this fort ‘the work of giants’ Vacations are the best time to spend with family and friends. This vacation we went on our much awaited school trip. Places toVISIT The Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most magnificent and impressive forts in India. It was built in the year 1549 by the Rathore ruler of Jodhpur, Rao Jodha. It is believed to be one of the most well maintained forts in India. Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 AD by Rajput King Rao Jodha. It covers an area of twelve hundred acres, making it the second-largest fort in Rajasthan. It sits atop a hill and is known for its distinct architecture. The main attractions include a museum and a series of palaces. In the museum, you can find all kinds of weapons, palanquins, costumes, paintings, howdahs and turbans. The most interesting aspect of the museum was its architecture. The fort has a number of palaces such as the Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal and Sheesh Mahal. The largest room in the fort is Moti Mahal. It has a throne called Srinagar Chowki. The king used to sit on this throne and meet his visitors. The fort also has temples. Chamunda Temple is the one we visited. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. We also enjoyed the cultural performances that were taking place at various locations inside the fort. The forts of Rajasthan are both enigmatic and majestic. Their architecture is what separates them from other Indian forts. The outermost part of the fort is occupied by the army. It also has a residence area for the Brahmins.

It is a fantastic destination for shopping. It offers something for everyone. Every city of Rajasthan has something unique and exclusive on display for its shoppers. The Golden City, Jaisalmer is an exciting place for shopping. As you stroll through the narrow lanes of its markets, you will be engulfed by the variety of clothes and handicrafts it has on offer. It is best known for its embroidery, mirror work, rugs, blankets and finely-cut antiques. Puppets and jutties (hand-made leather shoes) are well worth buying too. You will also find beautiful fabrics, woven jackets, camel-leather items and wooden boxes. You will find a colourful range of the popular bandhini (tie-and-dye) fabrics as well. Some of the major shopping places in Jaisalmer are the markets within the fort, Sadar Bazaar, Bhatia Bazaar, Gandhi Darshan and Seema Gram. STC RAJASTHAN SPD 14
  • 15. 15 Shopping in Jaisalmer was very interesting as the market had almost everything including handicrafts, paintings, wooden items, gems, jewellery, and clothes. We saw many local handicraft items and different designs. The look of the markets is unique because of the use of bright colours. The miniature art stole our hearts. We saw detailed paintings that were made with a brush comprising of a single strand of hair. Then there were the beautiful handmade bags made up of real leather. There were beautiful diaries with pages made entirely of hand-made paper. The mirror-work on the amazingly handcrafted slippers, clothes, and diaries completely justify their prices. We feel that everyone should visit the local markets in Jaisalmer because of their vibrant atmosphere, and diverse and colourful Rajasthani handicrafts. In these markets, you will notice that the shopkeepers are very kind and polite and share a sense of unity among themselves. They also know basic English in order to converse with foreign customers. All this brings a very different kind of energy to their markets and gave us a chance to learn about Rajasthan.
