Meekness Greek word for “controlled strength”
It’s a two step process. James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
Flashback to chapter 1. We need more faith inspired wisdom.
Wisdom is application of knowledge.
Revelation for God is designed to produce wisdom not just knowledge
James uses the phrase meekness of wisdom which is also a flashback to chapter 1

The controlled strength of God’s word

Deadly Couplets
Bitter Jealousy- Bitter same word for bitter water in last chapter. Recalls the bitter water in the wandering in the wilderness. Chopped tree is a type of Christ.
Jealous same word as zeal and concern w/o the bitter as a modifier. Indignation, punitive action, envious, contentious
Lie against the truth. Your actions do not stack up against the truth of God’s word
Selfish Ambition- one Greek word translated as two English words. Selfish putting oneself forward, self promoting. Hostility. a feeling of resentfulness based upon jealousy and implying rivalry
James 3:15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic..
Rabbis used this figure of speech to refer to YHWH. An action from God. Same words found in John 3 which has been translated as born again.
If the tongue is set on fire by hell, then hypocrisy is demonically inspired.
Earthly- wisdom that is worldly. The way of the world
Unspiritual- Natural instead of supernatural. Judging things by the 5 senses. Metaphor for evil intent in human nature
Demonic- Demonic! Supernatural but not from God.
All of these lead to confusion and evil practices
James 3:16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
A ruined Church. Disorderly. Wrong actions.

I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
James 3:17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. From J3:16 Born-again
