3. Intent VS Application
What is the author saying?
How do I apply it?
Part of the application is a self test from this passage.

27. Tests for salvation
27
For out of the abundance of the
heart the mouth speaks. The good
person out of his good treasure
brings forth good, and the evil
person out of his evil treasure brings
forth evil. I tell you, on the day of
judgment people will give account
for every careless word they speak,
for by your words you will be
justified, and by your words you will
be condemned.
Matthew
12:34b–37
28. Tests for salvation
But what comes out of the mouth
proceeds from the heart, and this
defiles a person. For out of the
heart come evil thoughts, murder,
adultery, sexual immorality, theft,
false witness, and slander.
Matthew

31. Control VS Uncontrollable
For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and
sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed
by mankind, but no human being can tame the
tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
James 3:7–8 31
33. Hypocrite
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we
curse people who are made in the likeness of God.
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.
My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
James 3:9–10 33
36. More from the world of nature
Does a spring pour forth from the same opening
both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my
brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce
figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
James 3:11–12 36
38. Learn the value of silence
Even a fool who keeps silent is
considered wise; when he closes
his lips, he is deemed intelligent.
Proverbs 17:28 38
39. Watch your tone
A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Proverbs 15:1 39
40. Think before you speak
Do you see a man who is hasty in
his words? There is more hope for
a fool than for him.
Proverbs 29:20 40
41. Be a Fire Fighter
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any
transgression, you who are
spiritual should restore him in a
spirit of gentleness.

42. Be a Fire Fighter
Keep watch on yourself, lest you
too be tempted. Bear one
another’s burdens, and so fulfill
the law of Christ.

44. Repairing fire damage
Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for
restoration, comfort one another, agree
with one another, live in peace; and the
God of love and peace will be with you.

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue
What is the author saying?
How do I apply it?
Part of the application is a self test from this passage.
The unregenerate man—this epistle calls him the deluded man.
The immature believer—James calls him the double-minded man (a believer whose life is divided between things of this world and things of God).
The mature believer—(a believer whose life is centered around God). The perfect man

This is a bridge between chapters 2 and 3.
Good teachers teach the whole counsel of God’s word. From Abraham the father of faith to Rahab the prostitute. Faith is important. Works are important and must go together. The teacher instructs. Verbally. Instruction is important to becoming the perfect man. Bridle is the pick-up word to the next teaching. Controlling the tongue. Another test for us as believers
Ya’ll – Southern plural you or Youse guys for the northerners. Speaking to recipients. Calls the reader to make a judgement of themselves

Controlling every aspect of life is the goal. The starting place is our mouth.
James 1:2–4 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 1:6–8 (ESV)
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

On the earth we function as God’s image.
We are created to image God, to be his imagers. It is what we are by definition. The image is not an ability we have, but a status. We are God’s representatives on earth. To be human is to image God.
To speak against someone is to speak against Him.
