4. Headed North
So Abram went up
from Egypt, he and his
wife and all that he
had, and Lot with him,
into the Negeb.
Genesis 13:1 4
5. A good thing
Out of Egypt, I have called my son
Reliance on man
Type of sin
Seek the kingdom and His righteous…
Genesis 13:2 Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.
5
6. Starting over
Genesis 13:3–4 And he journeyed on from the
Negeb as far as Bethel to the place where his tent
had been at the beginning, between Bethel and
Ai, to the place where he had made an altar at the
first. And there Abram called upon the name of
the LORD.
6
7. I’m back
to the place where he had made an
altar at the first. And there Abram
called upon the name of the LORD.
Genesis 13:4 7
9. A problem with blessings
Genesis 13:5–7 And Lot, who went with Abram, also
had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could
not support both of them dwelling together; for their
possessions were so great that they could not dwell
together, and there was strife between the herdsmen
of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s
livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the
Perizzites were dwelling in the land.

10. Lot
1. Abram’s Nephew
2. Traveled with him
3. Successful
4. No call
5. Choose the easy path
6. Righteous
10
11. Righteous?
…and if he [God] rescued righteous Lot, greatly
distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked
(for as that righteous man lived among them
day after day, he was tormenting his righteous
soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and
heard)
2 Peter 2:7–8 11
12. There is a problem
Overgrazed land
Overtaxed water resources
Desertification will take place
Strife between the herdsmen
Impact the whole area
Not addressing the situation is the wrong solution
12
13. Abram takes matter into hand
Genesis 13:8–9 Then Abram said to Lot, “Let
there be no strife between you and me, and
between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for
we are kinsmen. Is not the whole land before
you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the
left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take
the right hand, then I will go to the left.”
13
14. Conflict Resolution
Problems happen
They won’t go away by themselves
Biblical solutions are always best
Your heart needs to be right
You cannot control another’s reaction
14
15. The goal of conflict
resolution
Resolve the issue
Improve the
relationship
Not about winning
15
16. Magnanimous
Genesis 13:10–11 And Lot lifted up his eyes and
saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered
everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the
land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was
before the LORD destroyed Sodom and
Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself all the
Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they
separated from each other.
16
17. The outcome
Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while
Lot settled among the cities of the valley
and moved his tent as far as Sodom. Now
the men of Sodom were wicked, great
sinners against the LORD.
Genesis 13:12–13 17
18. Is this a coincidence in timing?
The LORD said to Abram,
after Lot had separated
from him,
Genesis 13:14a 18
19. Paul and Barnabas
Super duo in the early church.
Barnabas is responsible for bringing Paul
Great success in missionary/evangelism work
They had a fallout over John Mark
They split up and the work continued. Leaders
raised up. Maturity, restoration and reconciliation
19
20. The Promise becomes clearer
Lift up your eyes and look from the place
where you are, northward and southward
and eastward and westward, for all the
land that you see I will give to you and to
your offspring forever.
Genesis 13:14–15 20
22. Tons of descendants
I will make your offspring as the dust
of the earth, so that if one can count
the dust of the earth, your offspring
also can be counted.
Genesis 13:16 22
23. Know then that it is those of faith who are the
sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing
that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,
preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham,
saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So
then, those who are of faith are blessed along
with Abraham, the man of faith.
We are the
spiritual
offspring of
Abraham!
Galatians 3:7–9 23
24. We have a part in this
…so that in Christ
Jesus the blessing of
Abraham might come
to the Gentiles, so
that we might receive
the promised Spirit
through faith.
Galatians 3:14
24
25. Different from the Land of Israel
remember that you
were at that time
separated from Christ,
alienated from the
commonwealth of
Israel and strangers to
the covenants of
promise, having no
hope and without God
in the world.
Ephesians 2:12
25
26. Here’s our inheritance
This mystery is that the Gentiles are
fellow heirs, members of the same body,
and partakers of the promise in Christ
Jesus through the gospel.
Ephesians 3:6 26
27. The inheritance spelled out
For by grace you have been saved
through faith. And this is not your own
doing; it is the gift of God, not a result
of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2:8–9 27
28. John 8:39 Jesus said “If you were Abraham’s
children, you would be doing the works Abraham
did,
James 2:21–22 Was not Abraham our father
justified by works when he offered up his son
Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active
along with his works, and faith was completed by
his works;

30. Continued obedience
So Abram moved his tent and came
and settled by the oaks of Mamre,
which are at Hebron, and there he
built an altar to the LORD.
Genesis 13:18 30
2 Corinthians 5:7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.
What is faith? God is who he says he is and will do what he says he will do. Separate from belief. Faith compels us to be pleasing to go through obedience.
Genesis 13:1 So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb.

Genesis 13:4 to the place where he had made an altar at the first. And there Abram called upon the name of the LORD.
Realization that you are Out of God’s will. I am where I don’t belong. Not where I should be.
Retrace his path- Go to that place spiritually. Heart habits and hands
Relocates Find that good place- Church of Ephesus Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. Where do you need to be to accomplish your call.
Revival- Calls upon the name of the Lord
Call upon the LORD
Genesis 13:5–7 And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together, and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land.
Abram’s Nephew- His brother Haran’s son. He died in Mesopotamia
Traveled with him- Scripture says Abram took Lot with him. The family looks after the family.
Successful - Too many livestock for the land to support. He had servants, had shepherds to tend his flocks
No call- Nothing recorded. He was enjoying the blessing of being with Abram
Choose the easy path- given the first choice he takes the better land
Righteous- yes righteous. Here’s what the apostle Peter says about him
2 Peter 2:7–8 and if he [God] rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard);

Problems happen Luke 17:1 (NIV) Jesus said “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.
-They won’t go away by themselves- Ever see a dirty dish wash itself?
Biblical solutions are always best Matt. 18.
Your heart needs to be right- Galatians 6:1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
You cannot control another’s reaction- Romans 12:18 ( If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Resolve the issue
Improve the relationship

When they separated, God gave great revelation to the Father of Faith. Without the parting of ways this is a different story.
Reminds me of Paul and Barnabas.
Super duo in the early church.
Barnabas is responsible for bringing Paul
Great success in missionary/evangelism work
They had a fallout over John Mark
They split up and the work continued. Leaders raised up. Maturity, restoration and reconciliation
It was after this breakup that Paul received what we refer to as the Macedonian Call.
Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.
Everything you see
