Advising Tip of the Month: Have a Productive Conversation with a U.S.
University Admissions Officer
We recommend that you to contact the admissions officers of the colleges you plan on applying to. Contacting a
college admissions officer gives you the chance get the scoop on everything, from what courses are offered to life on
campus. Consider the following when contacting a college admissions officer:
1) Do most students live in college residences? Attend a college fair this fall!
2) Is the climate there variable throughout the year?
3) Which other cities are close to the college? How close?
4) What is the international mix of students at the college like?
5) What are the average ACT/SAT scores of the accepted students?
6) Which majors are especially well known at the college?
7) What is the acceptance rate from the candidate pool?
8) Do PhD students/teaching assistants teach courses?
9) What are the living expenses?
10) What is the typical class size?
11) What are the sports facilities like?
12) What other extra-curricular activities are there (music, drama, etc.)?
13) Are scholarships offered, and for what? How many? What is the average award?
14) Does the college offer “study abroad” as part of the degree?
15) How do the overall costs of tuition compare to other colleges?
What is the size of the campus? Hunter
