2. Introduction
• As co-owner and director of MPC Containment International, attorney
and entrepreneur Edward Reicin supplies the US military with portable
storage tanks. With a background as a professional singer who has
appeared in numerous operatic productions, Edward Reicin supports
organizations such as the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Among the anticipated productions in the opera company’s current
season is Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice. This seminal
mid-18th century work drew on Monteverdi’s 1607 composition L’Orfeo,
which had a stated aim of recapturing the creative power of ancient
Greek vocal dramas. By the time of Gluck’s work, opera had become
staid and predictable, with Italian opera seria relying on two basic stock
devices: the secco recitative and the aria, to move the dramatic action
forward.
3. Orphée et Eurydice
• Seeking to do away with cliche, over-elaboration, and a trope of only
showcasing a single emotion at a time, Gluck aimed for emotional
directness in his compositional works. He refined Orphée et Eurydice
several times following its premier, with a focus on incorporating French
lyric tragedy conventions, as well as physical movement through
sections such as the Dance of the Blessed Spirits. The result was an
innovative lyric work that succeeded in providing bite and urgency, and
breathed new life into a predictable operatic form.
