  2. 2. INTRODUCTION • Edwin Shoffner has spent nearly nine years as the president of Mattress Wholesale in Greenville, South Carolina. In 2013, Edwin Shoffner expanded his professional activities by becoming the president of Mattress By Appointment, also in Greenville. The average human spends approximately one-third of life sleeping. The use of a comfortable, supportive mattress is one of the best ways to optimize the various health benefits of a good night’s sleep. Some effects of adequate slumber, and the lack thereof, are better known than others. For example, research has drawn a direct line between lack of rest and excessive weight gain.
  3. 3. GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP • Multiple studies have indicated individuals with shorter sleep durations weighed considerably more than those who receive the appropriate amount. One study indicated that children and adults were 89 percent and 55 percent more likely to become obese on short rest cycles, respectively. Increased concentration and productivity are commonly discussed as benefits of a good night’s slumber. A proper sleep cycle is crucial to various mental functions, including cognition, performance, concentration, and productivity. Research suggests that the effects of a short rest cycle in the workplace are comparable to those of alcohol intoxication, with one study finding that medical interns were 36 percent more likely to make serious errors when deprived of sleep. Additional benefits of a suitable night’s rest range from optimized performance in athletic settings to decreased risk of heart disease and stroke.
