2. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DIFFERENT
MEDIA INSTITUTIONS
• Cinema – A theatre where films are shown for public
entertainment
• T.V – An electronic device that allows you to view television
programmes and movies. Consisting of a display screen and
speakers
• Film festivals – A film festival is an organised, extended
presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening
venues, usually in a single city or region and mainly showed
outdoors.
3. GUILDFORD ODEON
• These are 8 movie examples that are currently viewed at in the odeon, Guildford. As
can be seen most of the movies are for viewers aged 12A and above as many of
them have signs of strong language, violence and sex references which tells me that
this audience is of a more mature level.
4. GUILDFORD ODEON
• The films genres are mainly action thrillers, fantasy and one comedy. These films
seem to be some of the top grossing films and are widely popular. With the amount
of action thrillers it can be estimated and drawn to the conclusion that many men
would visit this odeon as action type films tend to be stereotypically aimed at male
audiences. Unfortunately there isn’t any psychological films screening, suggesting
the audience may not be interested inn them which is a disadvantage as our film is
of that genre.
5. BFI: INDEPENDENT CINEMA
• With this independent cinema, their top
current films compromise of different movies
shown. Including the eagle hunters, force of
evil and cape fear and silence starring Liam
Neeson. These films are specific to their
audiences, meaning only certain types of
social groups will like them.
• Unfortunately there isn’t any psychological
thrillers like ours and in contrast to the Odeon
the films are specifially aimed at a certain
audience.
6. INDEPENDENT CINEMA: HYDE PARK
• There are a few films shown in this independent theatre, and compared to the other
two cinemas the target audience seems to be much younger. With the younger
audience in mind, the genre themes of these films seem to be restricted to non
violent and child friendly films.
• Again our film would be at a disadvantage as it wouldn’t be suitable due to the
psychological and violent nature to it.
7. FILM FESTIVAL: CANNES
• These films shown are the competition ones. By looking at them I can tell that the
common genres include romance and drama. With the rage of different genres,
there will be a variety of different social groups.
• Furthermore this is a disadvantage as there are no psychological genres and will
have to compete with top grossing films and the likelihood of ours losing is high.
8. FILM FESTIVAL: CANNES
The most apparent common theme appearing would be drama. From previous years
films that have won awards tend to be full of drama, because of this I conclude that
movies which make the audience feel an emotional attachment tend to be the most
successful and popular. This can be a huge advantage for our film as the
psychological theme could also have that emotional effect on the audience.
9. TV:FILM 4
• Recent films that are shown on this
channel are mainly action thrillers.
• These are films shown within the
past few days. As you can see most of
them are action thrillers with on
Christmas film, Scrooged.
10. ODEON CINEMA
YES NO
Large proportion due to mass audience.
The age range is similar to our film which is
late teens to early twenties. There are
many popular thrillers viewed at the
Odeon.
It’s unlikely as films shown tend to be high
grossing films with big budgets and well
known actors and actresses
11. CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
YES NO
A film festival with a theme of thriller will be
held and attract and intrigue the appropriate
audience. This would result in a large audience.
It’s unlikely that the genre will be picked and
there is a possibility that not many people
would watch it as they aren’t the right target
audience.
12. TV: FILM 4
YES NO
It is likely that unknown films can be shown
resulting in lots of people watching them
therefore making more people aware of it and
recognising it.
However there is a likelihood that no one will
watch it due to the timings that can conflict
with the target audiences free time and with
not many people watching it, it will not be
recognised nor popular
13. OVERALL
• Realistically from all the institutions, I believe that the best place for our film to be
shown is at an independent cinema or preferably a film festival. This is because with
our low budget film and unknown actors and actresses, is the best place realistically.
Also with our film being shown in an independent cinema there is a likelihood that
it will become popular
