Question 6- What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
Hardware
The hardware that I used during the process of making my music
magazine are:
Camera DSCR
Lights- studio strobes
iMac-Apple
SD card
Keyboard & mouse
Mobile phone (Apple iPhone 6)
Camera and equipment
The camera I used was the Nikon D3100 – Digital SLR. The camera allowed me to focus on
the subject and to get high quality photographs. This then enabled me to have decent
images in my music magazine. Alongside the camera I used Horseshoe Flash Trigger, this
sends infra red signal to the strobe flash, which triggers the flash in-sync with the camera
shutter. Hemisphere 300 – Strobe flash Dial on back adjusts output – modelling light on.
Auxiliary lights set to slave (triggered in-sync with by built in light sensor). Alongside I also
used Soft Boxes. The model lights use soft boxes – they disperse the light and give a softer,
rounder light on the subject. This enhances the quality of the images, as with my images, it
made the red lipstick stand out and look much brighter, which worked along with my
theme very well. Backdrop, is lit with a further two strobes on full power to create a high
exposure, white background. I used the backdrop as the background on my cover page, I
think that this is why I tried to keep the magazine ‘sophisticated’ because of its white
background.
iMac-Apple
I used the iMac for all of the software to do with the production of the
music magazine. It was the main hardware to be able to complete the task. I
learnt a lot when using the iMac as before I’d never used one. Along with
the iMac I also used the keyboard and mouse, this was to transfer
information on to the machine and to be able to work it.
I used my iPhone 6 to take some pictures and to send them to myself
so I could get them on to the computer. On my contents page, the
picture of The Statue Of Liberty was taken by me, when I went to
New York.
iPhone 6
SD card
I used an SD card so I could transfer the pictures from the camera
to the iMac. From here I then used the images in Photoshop to create
my music magazine.
Software
The software that I used during the process of making my music
magazine are:
Adobe Photoshop CS5
Adobe InDesign
Wordpress.com
OS X-operating system
Microsoft PowerPoint and Word
Slide share
Photoshop
One of the main software's that I used was Photoshop. This was used for the
construction of the cover page, contents page and article. One of the first
things I learnt about Photoshop was that everything that you done was in
layers. This was important to understand as when placing everything you
wanted on the page, you had to make sure everything was in the right order
in layers.
I had to insert text on to Photoshop by clicking on the text symbol, then
choosing how I wanted my text, then on the canvas clicking where I wanted
it, then began typing.
I changed the font by clicking on the layer with the text symbol, then at the
top there is the option to change the font, you click on which one you want
and it changes.
To apply an image I just selected the image I wanted, then dragged it and
dropped it in to Photoshop. I didn’t edit any of my images or cut anything
out as I felt like they were all suitable and how I wanted them as they were.
To create any shapes I wanted I clicked on the rectangle tool and then on
the canvas I drew the borders I wanted. I then added colour to them by
clicking on the colour tool and then the colour grid came up. I chose what
colour I wanted. Then using the paint bucket tool I coloured the shapes in.
InDesign
In InDesign I put my text on to the background of my article page. I added the text
by clicking on the text tool and pasting my text, which I copied from my word
document. I then I had to put my text in to columns. I completed this by using the
selection tool, selecting the frame that my text was in and then clicking on text
frame options. I then specified the number of columns I wanted and it then put
my text in to columns.
Wordpress.com
Wordpress was used a lot during the process of making the music magazine.
To post a blog post you click on ‘my site’. You then click on blog posts and add. You
then type up your blog post and insert any media you want to then click ‘publish’.
You can also insert a page, which you go through the same steps as to add a blog
post, but instead you click on pages and add a page instead.
OS X-operating system
This system is what operated the iMac computers allowing me to use them.
Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
I used Microsoft Word to type up my article before putting it on to InDesign this was
so it was easier to proof read it and I could change any mistakes quickly as well. Also
it was written a while before putting it in to InDesign, so I had it organised and
ready.
I used PowerPoint for some of my homework's and my evaluation questions. I just
felt like it’s a better way to present everything and there isn’t just chunks of text
which can be very boring to read.
Slide share
I have used slide share to put my PowerPoints on to my blog. This is so they are
embedded and you don’t have to click on the link to then be taken to another page
to view the PowerPoint. To upload a PowerPoint you must click upload on slide
share, then select the PowerPoint you want to upload. Then you just have to publish
it.
