Backpacker to Sculptor Welshman Adam Humphreys travelled to Australia on a whim for adventure and discovery, looking for something more. Nearly two years on, he has carved a name for himself in the Australian Art scene as a chainsaw sculptor and artist.
The process begins - Wielding a chainsaw as his paintbrush, 24 year old Adam coaxes animals and people out of wood, creating works saturated with character and originality.
Onwards - Adam works in his ‘office’ at the Crisp Galleries, 14 km south of Yass.
End in sight - Adam credits much of his artistic eye to his lifelong struggle with Dyslexia, believing “when mathematics and spelling become very difficult you often find its because you’re looking at it in the wrong way but that perspective…can help you see things that aren’t otherwise apparent.”
The sculpture - The emergence of the figures from such large single blocks of wood is somewhat startling; for such a loud, clumsy looking tool the chainsaw creates a delicacy that is confounding.
Adam has held two successful solo exhibitions at the Crisp Galleries and has been invited to exhibit in the prestigious ‘Artisans in the Garden’ in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens. The Sydney exhibition runs from the 8th till 16th of October and showcases the work of 25 emerging and established Australian artists.
The Australian influence can be seen in Adams sculptures of local wildlife, including these perched cockatoos, a staple in any Aussie landscape.
The geese, so full on ambling character, have become one of Adams most commissioned works and a trademark piece in both of his exhibitions.
Once again Australia’s strong influence rings through Adams style; a kookaburra watches thoughtfully from his wooden perch.
Adam works from the philosophy that “you have to be lost to find yourself”. Having done just that in Australia, his success speaks broadly of his own strength of character and the opportunities in travel for anyone who looks with their eyes open.
