2. “The development of strategic management is
explained from an evolutionary perspective
on the basis of cycles of variation, selection and
retention. In industry, breakthrough innovations, or
technological discontinuities, initiate eras of ferment
that end when a generally accepted standard,
or dominant design, starts an era of incremental
change.

There is a need for describing strategic management
development. The objective of this paper is to show
how current directions of strategic management signal
the need for new paradigms. Anderson and Tushman
(1990) stated that technological progress is driven by
the interaction of technical processes and community
dynamics. Technological change is part of a cycle in
which technological discontinuities and dominant
designs mark the transitions between eras of ferment
and eras of incremental change.
4. Technological Discontinuities and
Dominant Designs (shortened)
Technological advance is characterized by socio
cultural evolutionary processes of variation, selection
of an industry standard, and retention via incremental
change (see Figure 1) (Tushman and Rosenkopf 1992).
