Audience Research
Target Audience Profile
My project is aimed at ages 16-19, both female and male. My aim is to create a
breakfast show style podcast which means that I am aiming it to be for people that are
getting up and getting ready for college, work or university. My idea is that they would
listen to this whilst getting ready and it would entertain them and help them wake up
and be in a better mood through entertainment and comedy within speaking along
with songs that are popular right now, aiming it to older teenagers too. It is aimed at
people who like to have a productive morning and give people the motivation to get
up, in a good mood and get on with the day with a smile on their face. I will avoid any
songs and news with religious references and news stories that could offend people or
things that listeners may have strong opinions against. Therefore, it will be neutral to
everyone no matter the race, religion and belief.
Audience Research
As the number of people that listen to the radio has lowered I know what
some people don’t listen to radio as much now and will therefore make my
project a podcast because its popular for teens to listen to some podcasts
over radio as they are shorter and more direct to what they want to hear.
The most popular time for the radio to be listened to is
either the breakfast show from about 7am when people
are getting up and ready, on their way to work/svhool
and when travelling. Another popular time for the radio
to be listened to is about 7pm on an evening which
Audience Research
I researched to find out what age
group listen to the radio and my
results came back as being people
ages 15+
I researched what music types are most
popular for when I do my production. The
most popular from the research I did, Is pop
music which I am going to adapt to my work
by choosing pop music for the songs in
between speaking etc. I may also use this in
the name for my radio station but I am
undecided at this point.
The most popular radio station in the uk right now
is heart, followed by BBC Radio 2 and Capital FM. I
am going to use this research to carry n with my
research. I am going to listen to a few of the most
popular stations and a few smaller, local stations
and compare them to see what works and doesn’t
work in my opinion and use these adaptations to
my work.

Existing Products
Existing Product
The capital one breakfast show is the most popular show
within capital FM. As this is the case, they make sure that it
has the biggest budget to put on the best show. It has the
most mention on all socials to advertise it too. Roman kemp
is the most known star on show after the list of many things
he has done and taken part in such as 'I'm a celebrity'. Their
studio as seen in the picture is well lit and has very carefully
set up equipment which is prepared to create videos for
YouTube, live streams, live on radio and the podcast which
is what this section of the show is representing. The
podcast is available on Spotify, YouTube, amazon music,
the website and more. The podcast includes interviews and
highlights from the show. Includes information and news
from the week and has its own jingle separate to the show.
Existing Product
Ear biscuits is a podcast ran by Rhett and Link. This is
available on all podcast streaming platforms as well as
YouTube. Their studio set up is a mix of both audio and
video equipment to have both video and audio video to
upload onto streaming platforms. Ear biscuits is highly
advertised on the Good Mythical Morning YouTube
channel as it is by the same company and has the same
presenters. The studio is set up to have dim lighting to
give the podcast a cosy feel whilst watching/listening.
The show is family friendly so appeals to most
age groups, however sometimes younger audiences may
not understand some of their references. Ear biscuits and
the good mythical morning crew are heavily advertised
and published on social media. They have social media
pages for fans to keep up to date, have sneak peeks and
get to see some behind the scenes. However, the social
media is aimed more at older audiences as it isn't always
as family friendly and has a lot more mature references.
Existing Product
York Mix Radio is a local radio stations for north
Yorkshire. However, it can be accessed all over the world
online. It is available on most streaming platforms and
online, on the website. It is heavily advertised on social
media as it is only a smaller, local station. The studio is
only a small set up as it is only a small local station
however it has access to all facilities and equipment
along with any software needed. YorkMix appeals to
teenagers and above by including social media
advertising, the presenters constantly keeping their social
media up to date, giving behind the scenes of the show.
When out in public they always wear YorkMix
merchandise to show who they are and advertise them.
The studio is set up for mostly live broadcast audio but
has recently set up web cams for Facebook live when
doing 'The Stress Test'.
Existing Product
Bailey Sarian does a YouTube series and podcast series
every Monday called murder, mystery & makeup. This is
available on Spotify, YouTube, apple podcasts, amazon
music and player FM. However, it is not heavily advertised
on social media unlike most podcasts and shows. Bailey
Sarian aims her podcast at older audiences and more
mature audiences as it does get graphic and times and
gory. She has a set up for both audio and video for both
her podcast and YouTube channel.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
All the products I have researched all have both video and
audio recording set ups to have the option to put it onto as
many social media and streaming platforms as possible. They
all heavily advertise their product on social media, like most
influencers and shows do in this generation as it gets you a
whole world audience.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your
on work?
I am going to use this research and create social media pages
for my podcast which will include behind the scenes and
sneak peeks of the show.
Questionnaire Analysis
Audience Research
The main age group from the
people that I asked that listen to
the radio, was between the ages of
16 and 19 which is the age range I
was making my project to be aimed
at.
After doing my survey I have found that
radio stations are aimed to entertain
everyone, not just a specific group. This
will allow me to make sure I'm not
heavily saying things that would appeal
to men or women.
I asked what stations people listen
to so that I can study a specific
radio station and see how their
shows run. The most popular from
my survey was Capital FM.
Therefore, I am going to study
capital's breakfast show to help
with my work.
Audience Research
I asked where listeners, listen to the
radio from and most said that they listen
in the car which. This could be as a
driver or a passenger and this is the
most popular place to listen to the radio
on. From that, I am going to mention
where you could listen from within the
speaking parts of the show.
I asked when people listen to the radio
and 50% said that they listen to the
radio on a morning for the breakfast
show and after the survey, asking people
and doing some research I have found
that the breakfast show for most radio
stations are the most popular shows.
They have the biggest budget and the
most publication which is why I have
decided I wanted to create a breakfast
show.
On the survey I asked what their
favourite genre/style of music is
and 50% said that pop music was
their favourite or what they listen
to most. However as there was
other types of music people liked I
am going to include a mix of
genres and stick to top songs on
the chart and older popular songs.
That way it's up to date and isn't
biased.
Audience Research
I asked, who people would like an
interview from and most said
an artist. I also asked what type of
artists people listen to the most and it
was very close between female and
male singers. As it was such a close
number, I have decided that I am
going to make the interview is
between both a male and female
artist which are releasing a collab
together.
I asked how many interviews people
would like to hear in the show and
50% said only 1, however 40% said 2.
So, what I have decided I am going to
do is that I am going to do q interview
but split into 2 sections. It is going to
be an interview with both a female
and male artist which are 'collabing'.
Most people have said that they do
not follow radio stations on social
media. However, people that do...
Interviews
Interview 1
1. What question/s would you want to hear answered by celebrity guests on the
radio/on a podcast?
- “Do you like to read? If yes, what books do you like?”
- “What would you do if you weren’t famous?”
2. What popular pop songs would you want to hear playing?
- Light switch by Charlie Puth
- Complete mess by 5SOS
3. Background music or no background music?
- No background music
4. Do you prefer formal podcasts or informal?
- Informal because I feel that the interaction would be more genuine and they would
be more comfortable.
Interview 1
• Observation: fans like to hear about their personal lives and what they do when
they’re not on your screen. There is a lot of personal questions asked in interviews
when it comes to popular celebrities and the more personal the questions, the
more intrigued fans are and the more attentions and popularity the interview will
get on all platforms. Therefore, I am going to choose some questions that are a fair
balance but quite personal questions.
• From my first interview I also found out that there's a lot of charts songs being
requested and from there I am going to do some more research abut pop songs
that are in the charts right now to use in my work as then it is more recent.
Interview 2
1. What question/s would you want to hear answered by celebrity
guests on the radio/on a podcast?
- “What would you be doing if you wasn’t producing music right
now?”
- ”what is the weirdest experience you have had with a fan?”
2. What popular pop songs would you want to hear playing?
- Dove Cameron, Boyfriend
- Anyone for you, George Ezra
3. Background music or no background music?
- Background music
4. Do you prefer formal podcasts or informal?
- Informal and casual chats as they are more interactive and easier to
follow.
Interview 2
• Observation: the same as the first interview there was quite personal questions requested for the
interview. This is making me realise that fans really want to know personal things over questions about
their work etc.
• I also observed that people prefer informal interviews, podcasts and radio stations as it make the audience
feel more connected and its more conversational. I am going to use this for my work by making sure that
the interview is chatty and informal.

  • 18. Interview 1 • Observation: fans like to hear about their personal lives and what they do when they’re not on your screen. There is a lot of personal questions asked in interviews when it comes to popular celebrities and the more personal the questions, the more intrigued fans are and the more attentions and popularity the interview will get on all platforms. Therefore, I am going to choose some questions that are a fair balance but quite personal questions. • From my first interview I also found out that there's a lot of charts songs being requested and from there I am going to do some more research abut pop songs that are in the charts right now to use in my work as then it is more recent.
  • 19. Interview 2 1. What question/s would you want to hear answered by celebrity guests on the radio/on a podcast? - “What would you be doing if you wasn’t producing music right now?” - ”what is the weirdest experience you have had with a fan?” 2. What popular pop songs would you want to hear playing? - Dove Cameron, Boyfriend - Anyone for you, George Ezra 3. Background music or no background music? - Background music 4. Do you prefer formal podcasts or informal? - Informal and casual chats as they are more interactive and easier to follow.
  • 20. Interview 2 • Observation: the same as the first interview there was quite personal questions requested for the interview. This is making me realise that fans really want to know personal things over questions about their work etc. • I also observed that people prefer informal interviews, podcasts and radio stations as it make the audience feel more connected and its more conversational. I am going to use this for my work by making sure that the interview is chatty and informal.
