Software Defined Networking, and more importantly OpenDaylight SDN, brings the power of programmability and automation to networks. This presentation will take you on a journey together with Ericsson through our past decision to productize and base our SDN solutions on OpenDaylight, our activities that ensure current open source initiatives such as OpenDaylight, OpenStack and OPNFV power the transformation to Telecom Cloud and our plans for OpenDaylight and PaaS Integration.

The feature story – Five trends shaping innovation in ICT – presents what I consider to be the major technology trends that will stimulate innovation in the coming year. Do you agree with me? I’d love to hear from you with any feedback you might have. If I were to suggest one takeaway from all of the articles included in this issue, I would say it is speed. Device processing is getting faster, data speeds are constantly increasing and radio speeds are approaching those of fiber. More people are becoming subscribers, more things are becoming connected and more applications are running constantly. Developers of new technologies are working hard to enhance responsiveness by reducing latency, a key performance parameter. The capability to determine which functions can be virtualized to maximize ideal placement in the network and ensure low latency is one of the primary driving factors behind the proposed split of radio-access architecture discussed in this issue. As always, I hope you find our stories relevant and inspiring.

Bill and Aimee's Excellent DevOps Journey Bill Donaldson, Senior Principal Engineer, and Aimee Bechtle, Principal Software Engineer, The MITRE Corp In their presentation Bill Donaldson and Aimee Bechtle will share a summary of their tumultuous journey that has resulted in 75% of their corporate applications utilizing Continuous Integration with automated deployments, a 70% reduction in labor, and 288% reduction of cycle time. They will support these numbers with charts depicting the deployment volumes over the course of a 1.5 year adoption. They will share how by selecting the right applications, approach, and people, and using creative ways to advertise success, the new capabilities were embraced and adopted in their organization. The presentation will conclude with how Aimee has transformed her team to support Continuous Integration with auto deploy. Additionally, she will share why the 25% remain in the manual system and how she’s pursuing Continuous Delivery. In 2011 Bill Donaldson and Aimee Bechtle were leading development and deployment operations teams in The MITRE Corporation’s corporate IT department. MITRE is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to provide the US Government world class Systems Engineering. MITRE’s IT was running well with a mature and stable release process. Bill’s team had successfully adopted agile development practices and was adept at producing high quality software code quickly. However, the successful adoption of agile introduced a problem between the developers and the deployment operations team lead by Aimee. Developers had to “hurry up and wait” on operation’s 24-hour SLA to build and deploy their apps. The SLA frequently expired due to multiple handoffs and human errors. Tired of the bottlenecks and lengthy cycle times one day Bill said to Aimee “24 hours is 23.5 hours too long”. This simple requirement sparked the vision for a transformation of MITRE’s software delivery process. The deployment operations team was employing a manual, mature and repeatable process that had been in place for over 10 years. In fact, in 2012 the Release & Deployment Management process scored the highest among all the processes in an ITIL process evaluation. So why would Aimee be motivated to change? Because MITRE’s unique mission and culture values innovation, active cost management, and establishing MITRE as a showcase to their Government customers. Bill from Dev, and Aimee from Ops, partnered to successfully deliver an enterprise continuous integration and automated deployment capability. Aimee took Bill’s requirements and declared them as acceptance criteria. Together they formed an influential, cross-functional team that was critical to building momentum and adoption within the organization. And together they experienced the pitfalls and challenges of implementing change, working against the resistors and laggards. At times project goals were in question but through determination

PaaS: An Enabler for IoT in NFV Worlds

In the Internet of Things (IoT) world, you need to understand and exploit opportunities in the rapidly evolving core connectivity domain. To ensure that products will realize IoT benefits, plans and roadmaps must include connectivity requirements, activities, and projected costs. Steven Woodward shares perspectives from communication industry standards—NIST, TM Forum, QuEST Forum, ISO/ IEC, OMG, and ITU-T. He describes the NIST Cloud Carrier Framework that clarifies where the carrier and communication activities fit into the cloud and IoT ecosystem. This model defines the connectivity available for software-defined networking and network-function virtualization. Steven demonstrates the challenges we face as information communication technology moves toward big data and highly interconnected things. The IoT revolution places connectivity directly on the critical path because no reliable solution is possible without a connection to the cloud or to the things being managed or accessed.

In recent years as virtualization and cloud became more and more mature an opportunity has been created for the industry to move towards an NFV networking methodology. In parallel with this phenomenon the role of open source has evolved to establish a fundamentally new paradigm for software development. Today millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum is valued mainly because it can be used to achieve high speeds and capacities when combined with spectrum assets below 6GHz. But it can provide other benefits as well. For example, mmWave spectrum makes it possible to use a promising new wireless backhaul solution for 5G New Radio – integrated access and backhaul (IAB) – to densify networks with multi-band radio sites at street level. This Ericsson Technology Review article explains the IAB concept at a high level, presenting its architecture and key characteristics, as well as examining its advantages and disadvantages compared with other backhaul technologies. It concludes with a presentation of the promising results of several simulations that tested IAB as a backhaul option for street sites in both urban and suburban areas.

Commonly referred to as SIM cards, the universal integrated circuit cards (UICCs) used in all cellular devices today are in fact complex and powerful minicomputers capable of much more than most Internet of Things (IoT) applications require. Until a simpler and less costly alternative becomes available, action must be taken to ensure that the relatively high price of UICC modules does not hamper IoT growth. This Ericsson Technology Review article presents two mid-term approaches. The first is to make use of techniques that reduce the complexity of using UICCs in IoT applications, while the second is to use the UICCs’ excess capacity for additional value generation. Those who wish to exploit the potential of the UICCs to better support IoT applications have the opportunity to use them as cryptographic storage, to run higher-layer protocol stacks and/or as supervisory entities, for example.

Thanks to Ericsson’s 4G/5G research activities and lessons learned from legacy networks, we have identified solutions that address both of these requirements by reducing the amount of signaling required during state transitions, and shared our discoveries with the 3GPP. This Ericsson Technology Review article explains the why and how behind the new Radio Resource Control (RRC) state model in the standalone version of the 5G New Radio standard, which features a new, Ericsson-developed state called inactive. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine.
