Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro

Welcome to this Pro session.
Over the next 40 mins we aim to show you how ArcGIS Pro enables you to work more efficiently and productively than ever before!
Its modern, contextual ribbon based interface makes it easy to use, particularly for users new to GIS
Its tight integration with ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS supports publishing and sharing of web layers, maps and scenes to organisations
Supports multiple map layouts in a single project
It’s a multi-threaded 64-bit application that facilitates smooth map display and parallel processing. These properties don’t mean that geoprocessing will be faster, but the application can load more data into memory. 64-bit geoprocessing is more robust, results will be more accurate, and processes that used to hang or run out of memory in ArcMap may be able to complete successfully.
It has new features such as tasks which provide guided, repeatable workflows for users
And you have 2D/3D visualization, editing and spatial analysis all supported in one application
So in a nutshell, imagine merging the best bits of all these applications – then you’ve got ArcGIS Pro!
Pro is a new part of Desktop not something separate.
Install both on same machine – ArcMap doesn’t need to be at the same version as Pro
Map(.mxd), Globe(.3dd) and Scene(.sxd) documents can be imported
Can use your existing data and scripts – tools to help check scripts
SDK - Customise the user interface to streamline workflows and extend built-in functionality to accomplish unique tasks using AddIns
GitHub online community provides samples, snippets, tutorials, and other resources
Pro has been out for over a year now with two updates in July/March.
These updates brought additional functionality into Pro and what got included was very much driven by you the users.
Lots of new functionality was added in the March 1.2 release.
We’ll be covering some of these in our demos.
One of the most talked about requests on GeoNet was around more flexible licencing options.
Click
So we’ve introduced a new way to licence Pro using your Single and Concurrent Use Desktop licences.
The default licensing model authenticates the software via named users managed via ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS but the new concurrent or single use options might be a good fit for you if your organisation already manages ArcGIS for Desktop licences via a licence manager or if you have specific security or firewall requirements.

There’s a useful video here if you want to know more
In this session Louise and I are going to focus on several areas where Pro provides a better user experience and workflow benefits over ArcMap.
We hope to encourage those of you who haven't tried it yet to give it a go, and those of you who may have dismissed it last year because it didn't do exactly what you needed, to look again.
So onto our demo…
Whilst giving a general overview of Pro we will concentrate on these topics:
…demos
Do things easier in Pro
Do things you can’t do in ArcMap
Use both applications as required to get the job done
Workflows where ArcMap remains the recommend application
More and more will be added to Pro with each release.
Exciting times ahead!
There are great web resources to get you going with Pro
We also offer two classroom training courses in addition to the many online resources – to suit new users and existing ArcMap users
Here’s the current schedule. More details on our website.
And of course there are several free recorded seminars you can watch whenever suits.
