next term by ESB
Plenary
A Working Group on Natural
Capital Accounting and Innovative
Financing has been established
under the Sino-EU Panel on Land
and Soil. Cooperation between the
WG and ESP P3 has been
established.
Recommendation 3 – Highlight the profitability of
soil research investment
9. Recommendation 4 – Soil research internet platform
Assess existing soil research partners, facilities, infrastructures, and
soil research programs across Europe, and development of a soil
knowledge hub for different audiences
10. Recommendation 4 – Soil research internet platform
Output target Current status to be performed
in 2019
to be
performed
beyond 2019
4. Initiate a web-based
platform for a
structured inventory of
soil research partners,
facilities,
infrastructures, soil
research programs and
metadata on available
soil information across
Europe.
a) The BonaRes1 approach was
regarded as a good example,
possibly to build on.
b) The ESDAC2 seem to be a
natural home of such
platform.
Two possible options of
implementation:
- Enhance BonaRes (resources?
Administrative arrangement?)
- Develop platform within ESDAC
(resources? arrangement?)
Decision on the
approach

administrative
arrangement for
implementation

through dissemination of research results
Actively promoting the European Soil Partnership programme,
specifically the one of Pillar 3, across different events and audiences
using a range of dedicated means.
12. Recommendation 5 – Promotion of ESP through
dissemination of research results

5. Promotion of the
European Soil
Partnership
programme, specifically
the one of Pillar 3
Promotion of ESP at different
events (workshops etc.)

Continuous
promotion
13. PILLAR 3 - DISCUSSION and NEXT STEPS
Comments/remarks
Pillar 3 functions , but is limited in achieving all goals due to a lack of funding
Participating institutes and experts invested time to progress (voluntarily)
Implementation of some targets (eg. Internet platform) is not feasable without
funding
Dedicated trainees at FAO/GSP are required to fulfil the envisioned tasks
Notas del editor
Okay, hello again everyone and welcome to a short update to Pillar three. As you can see I‘m not Coen Ritsema or Gergely Toth, the two of them apologize for not being here. I can brin you up to speed on the activities of P 3. I have asked them for their thoughts on some of these things but I‘ve not been present for these projects for the most part so in many cases I can tell you only what has been done.
Coen and Gergely apologize for not being able to present, but I hope I can bring you up to speed on it.
Last year at the ESP Plenary assembly where I wasn‘t there, but probably many you were, the recomendation for Pillar 3 were put into a European context and the following 5 recommendations were defined. I‘m going to go through them in the rest of the slides, present them and show you some projects that are doing what the recommendation set out to do.
The suggestion is to define a prioritized soil research agenda for Europe in the areas of soil characterisation, soil quality assessment, soil managment and provision of ecosystem services.
There exist some documents that do so, most importantly of course are the funding organs of the EU, such as who set their interests or… questions and with their grants of course then enable direction of research.
Gergely Toth and Coen told me, that ideally they would like to promote a research agenda, that tackle this research from all involved perspectives, that is poliy makers, farmers and scientists in a sort of holistic manner.
Here of course, we as ESP have our work cut out for us. Because we know…
Create strategic links between research entities, end-user communities and donor organizations to effectively embed soil research priorities across global, European, and national research programmes and projects
Both Coen and Gergely stressed to me to tell you, that Pillar 3 functions but is limited to achieving all goals due to lack of funding. So far, these has been either extra work by them on a voluntary basis or as part of a project that is happening anyway. But some things, like an internet platforecialising in these Eu soil research just don‘t come for free.
