The document discusses approaches to long-term adaptation planning in agriculture. It outlines five principles for sustainable food and agriculture according to international agreements. Guidelines are provided to address agriculture in National Adaptation Plans, including conducting climate scenario analysis, assessing vulnerabilities and risks, identifying adaptation options, and prioritizing options based on food security and poverty reduction. The document also describes an FAO program supporting 11 countries on adaptation planning and a Thematic Working Group to facilitate peer learning on implementing climate adaptation and transformation in agriculture sectors.

The way forward for agriculture
Improving efficiency in the use of resources is crucial for sustainable agriculture;
Sustainability requires direct action to conserve, protect and enhance natural resources;
Agriculture that fails to protect and improve livelihoods, equity and social well-being is unsustainable;
Enhanced resilience of people, communities and ecosystems is key to sustainable agriculture; and
Sustainable food and agriculture requires responsible and effective governance systems.

8. Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans
Flagship Programme
Objective | To identify and address climate change adaptation measures for the agriculture sectors in relevant national
planning and budgeting processes through the formulation and implementation of a National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
Global Programme Budget: USD 17 million Donor | BMUB Partner | UNDP

9. Thematic Working Group (TWG) on
Agriculture, Food Security and Land Use
With the aim to:
•Support NDC implementation
•Facilitate a peer to peer network for countries and international
organizations
•Explore opportunities of transformational change and paradigm
shift in the agricultural sectors
The story so far…
•Two TWG workshops held
•E-discussion on adaptation
•TWG workplan 2018 under review
•Goal to present the results of the TWG during
COP24 in Poland
• A country-led pilot group under the NDC

Notas del editor
Key activities include supporting countries:
Develop integrated adaptation approach and roadmap for national adaptation plans
Strengthen gender-responsive adaptation planning for the agriculture sectors;
Define a baseline on adaptation and improve evidence-based results in the agriculture sector;
Strengthen technical and institutional capacity on cost-benefit analysis, impact evaluation, gender mainstreaming, and monitoring and evaluation;
Identify climate finance for adaptation/GCF; and
Enhance regional and global dialogues through peer-to-peer exchanges
Objective:
Facilitate a peer to peer network for countries and international organizations to exchange and consult on knowledge, experiences and needs on climate change impacts and challenges in the agricultural sectors.
Support the implementation of NDCs related to agriculture, food security and land use
Explore opportunities of transformational change and paradigm shift in the agricultural sectors
FAO is developing a knowledge platform for sharing information and expertise, with explicit linkages to increased sustainable agricultural production and food security. The platform will facilitate capacity development through peer-to-peer learning and provide access to effective tools and knowledge resources.
- Under the NDC Partnership FAO has established, and facilitates the Thematic Working Group on Agriculture, Food Security and Land Use which provides an important forum to exchange information, experts, best practices and technology transfer, as well as to identify further support needs in agricultural sectors.
- FAO continues to mobilize climate finance for the agricultural sectors by assisting countries to access resources from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as well as other partners including the European Commission and Multilateral Development Banks and bilateral donors.
