AnDong Highway Toll - 2013 - Hangzhou
Bay, Ningbo, China
Project Overview
The re-design and expansion of the West
AnDong Hangzhou Bay highway toll demanded
de creation of a highway toll that would shelter the
highway payment process and stand as introduc-
tion to Hangzhou Bay’s globalizing and moderniza-
tion tendencies. Of the four proposals presented the
Fish Scales contained the critical elements that de-
fined it as the optimal solution:
1. Conceptually Hangzhou Bay is well related to the
sea and fishing industry, thus a simile to this already
situates the context.
2. A heterogenous structure generated by a series of
standardized components, reduces production and
construction costs.
3. In contrast to other toll structures which are com-
posed of a continuous volume, this fragmented set
of hanging curvatures provides a sense of levity
contrary to common conceptions of toll structures
in China.

104 OL Headquarters - The Magic Bean
2013 - Beijing, China
Project Overview
This project is one of those rare occasions
where all pieces fall into place in your favour. De-
signing the central patio of the boss of my boss’ new
office brought to our table a challenging brief, con-
nect the office public space to the roof garden let-
ting this become the identity insignia of the steadily
growing Oriental Landscape PLC.
For the profession of this company and
functional needs what better than a magic bean
stalk, where vines are vertical circulations, stems give
structural support, leaves house the public spaces
and flowers can extend into roof systems that en-
close patios?
Due to the rarity of the proposal, a 7 level
staircase that cannot be standardized due to its
sculptoric nature, that lands at varied levels and po-
sitions and has to be sustained by the existing struc-
ture, together with a series of 3m cantelever terraces
with floorplan shape of leaves, and a flower inspired
dome that spans 16m and 24m (all designed with
my 6 month experience in grasshopper at the time);
I had the pleasure to help define the parameters of
this endeavour with Thornton Tomasetti for structure
and ATB for architectural matters.
Finalization of the construction and rede-
sign of the office space by ATBO is dated for the
month of May 2015.

Pinzhou Bird Park - 2014
Pinzhou, China
Project Overview
A series of buildings that conformed the
Pinzhou Bird Park were requested. Members of the
office were assigned particular functions. In my case
the idea was a journey through the tropics, a Bam-
boo elevated path that brought visitors from the
controlled nature of the park into the more chaot-
ic expressoion of a tropical jungle that supposedly
housed birds of paradis and its kind.
Skills in bamboo construction were not well
developed in the area and after searching for alter-
natives the client opted for a steal strcuture, coupled
with a lovely green paint finishing. The aviary idea
was abandoned too but the twirling bridge among
the palm trees and fake rock still gives enough vari-
ety to create a worth while experience to traverse it.

13. Project Overview
Suzhou Wetland Park needed the devel-
opment of the south entrance to house 6 functions
in the manner of traditional buildings with a modern
twist, they were looking for an occidental interpreta-
tion of Chinese architecture.
Mimicking concepts from an open house
park in Beijing the 20 by 20 meter building blocks use
the displacement of the axis of traditional Chinese
roof systems, inverting the edges of the roof inwards,
to generate patios around which functions are orga-
nized.
Functions encompassed are ticket shop
and offices, exhibition area, conference building,
restaurant, commercial building and V.I.P. area.
These are organized in a 6-egg pack manner, en-
abling a spatial distribution that allows the panoram-
ic views towards the park. The buildings are con-
nected by traditional wooden passages that bridge
over the marshes.

15. Project Overview
Within the landscape project in the Yellow
River island of Chaoming we had to create a social
centre which housed the park offices, cafe and
conference space.
Placed in the centre of the park the idea
was to create a 300m2 crystal that, separating each
function into an independent space each with its
own orientation, framed the surrounding landscape.
Towards a panoramic view from the public space
(cafe, hall and sitting areas) the south-looking win-
dow is continuous, therefore demanding a shading
system in the form of an undulating pergola.

Linfen Exhibition Hall Proposal 1
2014 - Linfen, China
Project Overview
What we considered a playground space
for the local government in its absence for clear
functions, its relation-proximity to the government
offices and its apparent dissociation from its context
(center of a public park), has turned this proposal
into a mechanism that separates leisure from work
by means of the continuity of the park space into
the site area.
This continuity is achieved by creating a
plane of water in ground level to be traversed by
a lateral landscape path, connecting the east and
west mounds, and a bridge over the pond, which
rises to become the entrance to the leisure section
of the proposal.
This clear physical separation between
the office-administration space and leisure space
and their interrelation through a common connec-
tion with the landscape circulation plays into the
notion of the duality of nature, life and purpose, as
expressed by the Yin and Yang, a symbolism so ap-
preciated in northern China.

Linfen Exhibition Hall Proposal 2
2014 - Linfen, China
Project Overview
The brief for the second round of the Lin-
fen Exhibition Hall proposal was a little less succinct,
containing reference images denoting the client’s
inclination towards a more brutalist style, something
defining the edifice as an emblem to the strength of
the local governmental entity.
The façade became the axis to the build-
ing concept and its organization. A façade lan-
guage that could recount the strength in form and
materiality demanded by the client with the build-
ing’s floral context.
To this end the Corten Steel façade was
subdivided and the orientation of every segment
tilted to a degree defined by sine waves of differ-
ent frequencies, one for each row of segmentation.
Due to the magnitude of the functions and proxim-
ity to the government buildings a high level height
was possible providing the chance to occupy with
the steel façade the second level and half of the
first level, and still allowing a 2.4m high band of glass
that allows 360 degrees of panorama of the park as
well as causing the Corten polyhedron to levitate.

2014 - Linfen, China
Project Overview
As a co-protagonist to the park design by
the landscape company to which my architecture
department belongs, this now seems more an exer-
cise in chinese business; nevertheless gave me the
chance to manage a team in order to design a
20,000 multifunction (Concert Hall, Theater, Cineplex
& Museum) Culture Complex situated in the middle
of a park, giving the option to create a titanic look-
ing glass into nature.
The program divided the building in four
roughly equal quarters according to the main func-
tions, all accessible through the central open plaza.
The surrounding public park climbs the building
in an elicoidal manner, shaping the functions and
above ground access points as wind shapes rock or
tongues shape ice creams.

Project Overview
The idea of this concept is to give a corpo-
real form to the threshold between private and pub-
lic domains, while at the same time virtualizing the
outcome by making it a visually permeable wooden
mesh.
Where the museum’s volume is reduced to
its minimal architectural expression, a cuboid, which
allows for the public space to carve this functional
cube into a public circulation system that brings city
dwellers from the city, park and future esplanade
all the way to the roof top by 2 pathways, therefore
creating a contonous public space.

Project Overview
Location, Program, volumetry and occu-
pation were pre-established therefore the variables
were functional distributions, strctural approach and
skin identity.
The skin is a double system, a modular wall
vs. glass reticular grid that would respond to func-
tional needs; and a shading system that trasnforms
the 160m long rectangular facade into a fluid chro-
matic element that holds spring all the way through
winter. The structure tries to maximize clear spaces
demanded by functions. The roof allows for diffused
natural lighting.

Island Diamond Cinema 4D - Proposal A
2015 - Dong Hu Ming Zhu, China
Project Overview
In a cyclically immersible section of a riv-
er-island there was once the need for a diamond
shaped 4D Cinema Complex complete with sky res-
taurant and all.
Due to the compact nature of the dia-
mond an idea came for its deconstruction. Peeling
it like an orange the diamond skin opens to comfort-
ably house the intended functions, elevated 8 me-
tres from ground level, and comes down to become
the entrance to the premise, welcoming its users.

2015 - Dong Hu Ming Zhu, China
Project Overview
Due to the clients need for literal mean-
ing, any intentions to abrstract and metaphorize the
concept of diamond was abandoned for the defini-
tion of an ultimate literal, just changes in scale and
consistency.
This proposal further evolved into a real
project, where structural needs disabled the 4D cin-
ema in favour of a hotel and Love Museum, and fur-
thering its identitary needs by applying a blue film to
the whol glass shell.
The project reached CD development
and was finally cancelled when an outside Creative
Master the need for a less literal defining of the Dia-

Island Diamond Cinema 4D - Proposal C
2015 - Dong Hu Ming Zhu, China
Project Overview
OUDG’s investment in generating the Con-
struction Design stage of the Blue Diamond proposal
meant that the optimal approach was in salvaging
as much of it as possible in the third installment of the
Island Diamond.
A skin that houses the original plans was
developed conceptually as an unpolished diamond
stone (opaque skin) with crack that divides this skin
in north and south hemispheres, and the the north
further into 2 quarters, allowing the glass to enter the
open building and become a patio or inner plaza.

Jilin Airport Competition - Round 1
2015 - Jilin, China
Project Overview
An 8000m2 Civil airport Terminal in the city
of Jilin, that makes use of the army owned runways
to help release some pressure from nearby Chang
Chun Long Ja airport was proposed as entry for a
private competition.
The northern location of the city and its
unique underground river system create a peculiar
phenomenon, surface rivers that flow in deep nega-
tive winter temperatures; which in turn allow some
deciduous tree species to keep their leaves through
winter.
This was a conceptual element to be kept
as design cue, and developed into an organic arch
to pilar structural system to mimic the tree trunk and
branches and a series of polygonal perforations on
a snowlike flowing roof system, that assimilates the
frozen tree leaves.

Project Overview
In the second round a further 16,000m2
Terminal 2, supposed to be built in 2030, was to be
included in the entry, in search for a future coherent
dialogue between terminals.
The new design cues were a standardiza-
tion of the structure and a further strengthening of
the weightless quality of the roof system.
The approach was a hexagonal lattice
space frame roof sustained by branching columns
that meet the corners of alternating hexagons.

Project Overview
Based on a concept by ATB Architects, this
proposal represents a shift from a client based ap-
proach to the concept development process, and
into that of freeform aesthetics through transversal
profile deformation of the roof system, by which
natural illumination is achieved through the interior
space, protection from sun and rain is achieved for
the northern entrance and an aesthetics of fluidity is
attained.

This proposal permutes the concept of a
perforated snow-topped roof system taking inspira-
tion from the totaly unrelated shark gill organ. Given
the longitudinal orientation of the terminals being a
few degrees counterclockwise to the E-W axis the
openings face the Southwest allowing for natural
sunlight to access the premises in the last 2 thirds of
the day.
Furthering the idea of a frozen natural set-
ting the structure is composed of a ridged roof sys-
tem that deposits its weight on a double mirrored
row of tree-like columns that conform an arch sys-
tem.
