As Trend Builders Sdn. Bhd. is a development company, its is vital for the
personnel to be armed with the right key skill such as communication, problem

Human Resource (HR) department in the company. The head of HR department
shall identify the specific and satisfactory training and development needed by the
personnel in the company through job analysis and deliberations with the other
heads of department. From the job analysis, HR department will be able to develop
relevant and effective induction program that will be well-rounded for all the
subordinates to shape them to be more of a people person and enhance their key
skill. Personnel will be under the guidance of their seniors alongside professional
advice fused with organization experience to meet daily responsibilities and also

an overall understanding of the theoretical aspects of their work. Through one of the
various activities provided, the apprentices will be branched into different groups to
work together with employees from different departments and paired with senior
personnel to assist them to polish on their key skill. During the early stages of an
apprenticeship, the senior personnel may guide their subordinates by showing them
some simple tasks. These activities will also help the apprentices to solve specific
training problems as groups. For example, in-house project team members such as
the architect, engineer and quantity surveying will be able to work together and be
able to conduct meetings with contractors where the team members will be able to
deliver good explanation on any disputes that arose.

Information technology (IT) is the application of computers to store, study, retrieve,
transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a business or
other enterprise. The business value of information technology lies in the automation
of business processes, provision of information for decision making, connecting
businesses with their customers, and the provision of productivity tools to increase
efficiency.
A company gains competitive advantage by providing a product or service in a
way that customer’s value more than the competition’s. However, it is not information
technology that gives a company a competitive advantage; it’s the way they use
information technology that makes the difference. Companies need to use
information technology in an innovative manner.
Information technology (IT) benefits the business world by allowing organizations
to work more efficiently and to maximize productivity. Faster communication,
electronic storage and the protection of records are advantages that IT can have on
your enterprise. Information technology has to do with computer applications, on
which nearly every work environment is dependent. Since computerized systems
are so widely used, it is advantageous to incorporate information technology into
your organization and can subsequently give your business a competitive
advantage over its competitors.
Page 34
USE OF INFORMATION AS A
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
www.trendbuilders.co.my/
Our small contractor business is no exception to this, we will make use of
information technology to the best of our ability and to use it as our competitive
advantage in many ways.
Page 35
USE OF INFORMATION AS A
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
www.trendbuilders.co.my/
The following ways will demonstrate how our business will
benefit using information technology:
Storing and Protecting Information:
Information technology creates electronic storage systems to safeguard your
company's valuable records. Storage systems, such as virtual vaults, keep
information safe by only permitting certain users within your company to access,
withdraw, add or change the documents. IT security engineering systems protect
your electronic information from being hacked, or wiped out during a technological
catastrophe. Electronic security engineering means your valuable records will
remain unattainable.
Page 36
USE OF INFORMATION AS A
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
www.trendbuilders.co.my/
Automated Processes:
In business, individuals look for ways to do more work in a shorter period of time.
Information technology improves your company's efficiency by developing
automated processes to take burden off your staff. In turn, our employees are free to
work on other things while the computer runs their reports, creates queries, tracks
projects and monitors financials.
Work Remotely:
IT systems give you remote access to your company’s electronic network, so that
you can work from home or on the road. This accessibility allows you to increase
your productivity because you can still get work done, even when you aren’t
physically in the office.
Page 37
USE OF INFORMATION AS A
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
www.trendbuilders.co.my/
Communication:
Communication is essential to the business world, and information technology
gives your company the resources it needs to communicate quickly and effectively.
The IT department can set up our employees up with email, video conferencing
equipment and internal chat rooms, so that they always have an efficient way to
conduct business and communicate.
Decision Making:
Speed and accuracy are at the heart of making right decision for your business.
Every successful organisation has to go through a comprehensive market research
process which enables management to make the right decision. Market research
can be done in many ways through online surveys, forums, blogs, and group
discussions using World Wide Web and of course through in-person interviews as
well. These online tools not only provide real time responses from the potential
audience but also ensure the accuracy of data by minimising the risk of human
errors.
Page 38

Marketing and Business Growth:
The heart of the business success lies in its marketing which enables the
management to identify its target audience first and then observe their trends and
needs. The overall marketing covers public relation, advertising, promotion and sales
which subsequently impact on business growth. Many types of marketing can help
you reach your potential customers. Digital Marketing is a modern phenomenon
which let you promote your products or services all over the world. It is a broad term
which includes many concepts like search engine optimisation (SEO), pay per click
(PPC), blogging, discussion forum, email shot, SMS, MMS, social media marketing
and Smartphone app advertisement etc.
Customer Support and Satisfaction
Higher level of customer satisfaction is the key to success which cannot be
achieved without a real time customer support process. Business success depends
on knowing its customer’s needs, trends, behaviours and satisfaction level. Effective
communication is the best tool to understand the customer demands, problems and
their solutions. Some of these channels are email, webinar, social media, member
portals, online newsletters and text or multimedia messaging through the smart
phone.
Page 39
USE OF INFORMATION AS A
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
www.trendbuilders.co.my/
Other ways to have a competitive advantage over our competitors:
Cost Leadership: Cost leadership means you provide reasonable value at a lower
price. Companies do this by continuously improving operational efficiency.
That usually means paying their workers less. Some compensate by offering
intangible benefits such as stock options, benefits or promotional opportunities.
Others take advantage of unskilled labor surpluses. As these businesses grow, they
can use economies of scale and buy in bulk. Walmart and Costco are good
examples of cost leadership. But sometimes they pay their workers less than the cost
of living. Higher minimum wage laws threaten their advantage.
