This comprehensive Urdu lecture is about the Maxillofacial prosthesis (prostheses).
Lecture Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljhHR3kTZ_w
This lecture has four portions, First one is about the basics and intro. The second one is about the obturator. The third one is about the splint while the fourth one has miscellaneous maxillofacial prostheses.
I have tried to use simple language with common examples to make the study easy and fun.
Feel free to ask questions.

12. CLEFT PROBLEMS
• Difficult in mastication
• Food leakage in oral and nasal
cavity
• Loss of resonance voice
• Persistent sinus infection
PROSTHESIS
INTRAORAL
• Obturators
• Feeding devices/speech aids
• Double occlusal table prosthesis
• Acrylic ramps/flange appliances
• Shields/positioners
EXTRAORAL
• Auricular prosthesis
• Ocular prosthesis
• Orbital prosthesis
• Nasal prosthesis
• Lip/cheek prosthesis
13. O B T U R A T O R
prosthesis used to close
(congenital/acquired) tissue
opening (of hard palate and/or
alveolar structure)
TYPES
Based on Phase of Treatment
Based on Material Used
Based on Area Restoration
14. Phase of Treatment
- Surgical Obturator: used
immediately after surgery.
- Interim Obturator: several
weeks/months after surgery, this
prosthesis is given for interim
use till the definitive prosthesis.
- Definitive Obturator: a
permanent prosthesis that
replaces the missing part along
with teeth. Fabricated after a
year of surgery.
Material Used
- Metal Obturator
- Resin Obturator
- Silicon Obturator
Area of Restoration
- Palatal Obturator
- Meatal Obturator

BULB FABRICATION
If big in size, separate

pumice can be used
17. S P L I N T
prosthesis used to immobilize &
stabilize the loose teeth or to
immobilize the displaced or
movable jaw parts or used as
guide.
18. TYPES
Surgical Splints
- Occlusal Splint/Wafer/Guide:
used for as occlusal guide during
surgical procedure.
- Metal Cap: when rigid and
efficient form of fixation is
needed.
Periodontal Splints
- Labio-lingual splint: used to
stabilize the fractured arches.
- Occlusal splint: used for
intermaxillary fixation by
covering the incisal and occlusal
surfaces of both arches.
- Kingsley splint: conventional
splint is modified with the
addition of metal rods for
extraoral immobilization.
- Fenestrated splint: conventional
splint with holes where tooth
eruption is underway.
Functional Splints
- Occlusal balancing splint:
indicated in TMJ dysfunction
syndromes by easing the
muscles.
- Inclined bite planes: used to
guide the occlusion.
19. TYPES
Gunning splint Indicated for
edentulous arches
- One piece gunning: if both arches
are fractured. Both upper and
lower rims joined in centric and
vertical relation with the space in
incisors area for eating and
breathing.
- Two piece gunning: if one arch is
fractured. Intermaxillary fixation
done using existing
dentures/splint.
Miscellaneous
- Bite raising splint: indicated to rise
the deep bites. Anterior/posterior
blocks are made to facilitate the
raise.
- Night guard: used for the teeth
protection against bruxism.
- Mouth guard: used for arch/teeth
protection during sports like boxing.
- Snore guard: appliance used to
reduce snoring sounds at night.
- Antihemorrhagic/palatal stent:
used to stop/block the bleeding
after surgery.
20. M I S C E L L A N E O U S

22. Feeding and Speech Plate
Feeding Plate is indicated in
infant with cleft palate (lip) to
build a barrier.
Speech Plate has same
indication and used to improve
phonetics.
23. Jaw Exerciser
Used for exercise purpose in
help to open the mouth.
Trismus Appliance is a cone
shaped appliance which has
spirals on it helps in expanding
the jaws slowly.
24. Twin Occlusion Table Prosthesis
Indicated in
hemimandibulectomy patients
with asymmetrical occlusion.
One occlusion is for mastication
while other is for maintain the
facial contour.
25. Magnetic Prosthesis
With extreme maxillary defects,
where one piece prothesis is not
possible.
A two piece prosthesis is
fabricated which can be
attached with magnet or male-
female attachments.
26. Vacuumed Formed Retainer
Instead of conventional wired
retainers, these vacuumed
formed retainers are made
using thermoforming technique.
