1988 Constitution

 That should be promoted and protected by the
government
 Education in Brazil is supervised by a system of
ministries and government offices that work together at
the:
 Municipality,
 State and
 Federal level.

regulating early childhood education.
 The states and federal district are responsible for the
provision and regulation of primary and secondary
education.
 The federal government is responsible for the provision
of education in its institutions and the regulation of
private institutions
EDUCATION BODIES
1. The Ministry of Education
 It is responsible for:
 Providing technical and financial support to the
municipalities, the states and the federal district
 Drafting education legislation;
 Supporting the network of federal education
institutions
 Supervising the private education system.

LEVELS OF EDUCATION
1. Primary Education (Fundamental education )
 Duration is 9 years and is compulsory for children aged
6-14.
 Fundamental education curriculum includes:
 History,
 Geography,
 Science,
 Mathematics,
 Arts,
 Portuguese and
 Physical education.

2. Secondary Education
 Duration is 3 Years; Ages 15-18
 Curriculum includes:
 At least one foreign language,
 Philosophy,
 Sociology,
 Portuguese,
 Geography,
 History,
 Physics, chemistry, biology,
 Mathematics, art and physical education.

3. Vocational Secondary Education
 Duration: 3-4 Years
 Curriculum can include general as well as
specialized vocational subjects
4. Adult Education
 In addition to secondary and vocational secondary
education,
 Brazil offers an adult education secondary school
diploma for non-traditional students
 After it, Students may take university entrance exams

5. Higher Education
 Bachelor (4-6 Years): All programs require a final
paper or final research.
 Specialization Courses: The specialization courses
consist of vocational or professional programs
 Master (18-24 Months): A thesis is mandatory for
graduation.
 Doctorate (4 Years): A thesis or dissertation is
required for this degree.
TEACHER EDUCATION
 Teachers are the third largest occupational sub-group in
Brazil.
 Teacher colleges are the second most common schools
of higher education in Brazil
 Organizational structure for teacher training

Tutors are selected among a pool of fully
certified public school teachers.
Tutors, receive training from their respective
local Training Agencies
Biweekly meetings are conducted with local
teacher-trainees to provide them program
orientation and training support

Trained team travel to visit the teacher-trainees’
local school to:
 Guide and evaluate their pedagogical
practice
 Evaluate the their performance
Each tutor typically supervises approximately
12 teacher-trainees.
