WHAT IS MEANT BY PART OF SPEECH?
 The parts of speech explains how a word is used
in a sentence.
 There are eight main parts of speech
 Nouns
 Pronouns
 Adjectives
 Verbs
 Adverbs
 Prepositions
 Conjunctions
 interjections.
NOUN
A noun is a word that names a person,
place, thing , or idea.
Examples:
 Person: girl, John
 Place : school , hospital
 Thing : desk, laptop
 Animal: dog , parrot
 Idea: joy, freedom
Nouns can be concrete or abstrat.
CONCRETE NOUN
 A concrete noun is simply a person, place
or thing that is experienced through one or
more of your five senses.
 You can tell if something
is a concrete noun
because you experience it
through one of your five
senses: sight, smell,
hearing, taste, and touch.
If you cannot see, hear,
taste, touch, or smell it,
it’s not a concrete noun.
ABSTRACT NOUN
 An abstract noun is a noun that refers to an
intangible concept such as an emotion, a
feeling, a quality, or an idea.
VERB
 A verb is a word that shows action or state
of being. The action may be physical or
mental.
 Examples:
 They were jumping in the pool.
 Jason introduced the new course.
 They have lived here for a long time.

ADJECTIVE
 An adjective is a word that describes a noun
or a pronpun. Adjectives tell how many,
what kind, or which one.
 Examples:
 Happy
 Enthusiastic

ADVERB
 An adverb is a word that describes a verb,
adjective, or another adverb.
 Examples:
 How: perfectly
 When : yesterday
 Where: here
 To what extent: completely
PRONOUN
 A pronoun is a word that takes the place of
a noun.
 Examples:
 I
 Us
 We
 Them
 They
 There are subject pronouns and object
pronouns.
SUBJECT PRONOUN
 A pronoun that takes the place of one or
more nouns in the subject of a sentence.
 Examples:
 I
 You
 He
 She
 It
 We
 They
 You
OBJECT PRONOUN
 A pronoun that follows an action verb or a
preposition.
 Examples:
 Me
 You
 Him
 Her
 It
 Us
 Them
INTERJECTION
 An interjection is a word that expresses
emotion or strong feeling.
 Examples:
 Uh-oh!
 Wow!
 Hey!
 Oh no!
 Hurray!
“Awesome!” , shouthed the delighted fan.
CONJUNCTION
 A conjuntion is a word that joins words or
groups of words.
 Examples:
 And
 But
 For
 Neither
 Yet
 Because
 So
 or
PREPOSITION
 A prepostion relates a noun or pronoun to
another word in the sentence.
 Examples:
 About
 During
 Beside
 Over
 With
 Across
 From
The coach looked across
the field a smiled at the
players.
ASSESSMENT
 Identify the part of speech of every word in the
following sentences.
1. Her sparkling eyes shone under the dazzling
stars.
2. Jane ran into the peaceful park.
3. Wow! Come and feast your eyes on this
goreous cake.
4. He felt a kind of happiness mingled with
regret.
