Evaluation For My Music Magazine By: Farzana Begum
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My Music Magazine Vibe Magazine A Masthead: The title used by known typography to make the readers become familiar with what magazine they are reading. Main Image: image of a leading artist's or band's within the music genre of the magazine, to attract audience. Top and Bottom Strip: These are the strips below and above the magazine that give further information to what may be included in the magazine. Mostly being the interesting parts of the magazine. Pug: ‘The ears of the magazine’, can either be at the top left or/and right-hand corners of the front cover. The prices of the paper, the logo are positioned there or even a freebie is placed there to catch the reader’s eye. Left Third: The left third contains the main feature article (Exclusive interview or ‘Puff Piece’), as this is the core part of what may be inside the magazine. It also includes the main artist or band situated within. Barcode/Dateline & Price: A dateline in which the date of publish and the price are shown, the barcode is just the importance of the retailer.
Masthead –This gives the reader constant reminders of the company leading the magazine and the resource to research the company on the internet. Topics – The use of topics puts each piece of content into easier and clearer categories, making the magazine make sense and clearer. The images used on the contents page feature a band making the magazine an even greater prospect as the audience will feel more engaged and want to read the magazine more with music bands on the contents. Structure – The basic magazine structure consists of a ‘taster article’ on the contents page giving prospective buyers an insight into the content on the magazine. The sub-headings are clear and precise and show you very easily where you can access that content in the magazine. The band index gives the reader and precise showing of what bands will be in the magazine. This may give the readers more purpose to buy the magazine as maybe there could be a feature on their favorite band. My Contents Page Vibe Contents Page Target Audience - The audience targeted for this magazine is very . It has specifically targeted people who enjoy hip-hop and RnB music through the use of an member and features on bands. Font & Colour - The font, colours and house style are all the same type which gives the magazine a bold, but effective way of presenting their pieces. The layout is also very similar which gives the magazine structure and the reader’s a clear understanding of where to find what article or piece.
My Double Page Article A Real Double Page Article Overall Layout - On the first page of the double page spread, at the top of the page there is the heading in black with blue outline, its bold and catchy to catch the audiences eye. On the left side there's the first picture in the effect of colour of a leading artist; this is to let the readers know who they are reading about. There is the first column and its starts the interview in columns about the leading artist. The second page of the double page spread carry's the interview on, and when the interview finishes there is another image of the same artist, the reason for that was I had a lot of space left so I thought of adding another image to make it look professional instead of leaving some gap. The big writing captures the eye of the audience, as well as the crafty phrasing. The copy is laid out in two to three columns. Overall Layout - The first page of the double page spread it has the heading in red and white, again its to attracts the audience. Underneath the heading there is the main article about the artist in two columns. On the right hand side there is the main image, which takes the whole page. Its big and its so the audience know who and what they are reading about. Both of theses double page spreads is different to each other but it has all the codes and convention that a music magazine needs, such as; main image, heading, and the article in columns. its just the layout is different and presented differently.
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups? My magazine represents this social group as: People who enjoy music and celebrity gossip – used features are about music and ‘hip hop’ celebrities. People who go on social networking sites i.e. ‘Facebook’ and talk about celebrities that they have read about such as the new track that has come out etc. People who are fashion conscious and interested in the way they look the way that the celebrities have dressed and when they are wearing the typical clothing for the social group such as hat, baggy jeans, trainers that are from bug companies like Adidas, Nike, New York etc. My music magazine has a realistic portrait of this social group and therefore I think this will help in attracting them into buying the magazine. Structure and Layout – i kept the layout of the magazine same as a real music magazine, with an main image and some text to show what the magazine about. In my contents page i made the topics bold and wrote a line about what the topics are about. In my double page spread i also had two images and my main article. Colour and Font – i kept the colours Blue, Grey, White & Black all the way through. I choose those colours because i think they weren't too bright but it was easy to catch the audiences attention. Images- The Images are taken of people dressed in Hip Hop style, to show people what genre the music magazine is.
3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? If i would sell my music magazine i would choose Bauer media because i think it has a wide range of mass media market. They also follow TV and Radio Stations which will help me advertise my music magazine on TV as an advisement. Bauer Media reaches over nineteen million UK adults across multiple media channels. They have more than eighty influential media brands spanning a wide range of interests, including heat, GRAZIA, Closer, MCN, FHM, Parker's, MATCH, Magic 105.4, Kiss 100, Kerrang!, 4Music and the Big City Network and other radio stations. Bauer Media's business is built on millions of personal relationships with engaged readers and listeners. They connect audiences with compelling content, whenever, wherever, and however they want. There unique insight allows us to work closely with our customers to develop innovative solutions that create a difference to their business. http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/
IPC Media. The another media institution I would choose for my music magazine would be IPC Media, as it is to do with music and is a form of publicity and a guideline for youngsters and other people that are interested in hip hop music. I would choose IPC Media because as they have a huge profile of a variety of magazines and are a Huge Company who do know what they are doing. IPC Media produces over 85 iconic media brands, with their print brands alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 44% of UK men – almost 27 million UK adults – while their online brands collectively reach 20 million users every month. My magazine is similar in many ways to other magazines that have or are being distributed by the Institutions; As IPC does offer something for anyone and everyone. Institutions also look for potential and a large audience that a magazine could be marketed at. http://www.ipcmedia.com/
4) Who would be the audience for your media product? My magazine is the genre of Hip Hop so my audience for my music magazine would be targeted at the younger market of teenagers/young adults aged 15 to 19. this is because people who are interested in Hip Hop style music are usually the younger generation and they may represent themselves to other people by their clothing and the way they act in their society. Typical hip hop aspirers would be in to my magazine, they would be very much in to designer clothes and having the latest gadgets. As my audience would be in to current gadgets and clothes I feel a suitable advert in my magazine would be of a pair of designer trainers, this is attract my audience to but my magazine or take part in the competition. I feel that adverts are an important part of a magazine as they provide the money for the magazine to actually be made. I feel people from other social classes may be attracted to my magazine, these could be aspirers from the upper class market increasing my target audience. Typical Hip Hop Aspirer
5) How did you attract/address your audience? I believe I have attracted my audience in many ways, firstly by using a wide ranges of pictures; the pictures i used had a certain impact of what genre my music magazine is and the audience will know what my magazine is about and who it is about just by looking at my main picture. It attracts the audiences by reflecting the conventions of the genre Hip Hop main through the emotions the central image exhibits. My images was utilized to construct an emotion which mirrors the darkness in order for Hip Hop Swag’s genres to become more recognisable and attractive to its audience. The use of pugs for free items and bottom strips for competitions also attract the audience because of the opportunity to gain something huge for free or be entered in a competition to gain it. This element alerts purchase prone persons and therefore attract more of my audience.
6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? I learnt about how to use professional lighting and the different types of lights that are used to create that perfect image. I also learnt about colour filters and how they can change the image completely. I also gained knowledge on correcting the cameras focal lens to obtain the best image possible. I learnt how to make a background on Adobe Photoshop and then save as a jpeg file and then convert it onto Adobe In design, where we had to create the magazine. I learnt how to make layers on Adobe In design so my images don't overlap and bleed into one another. I learnt that Adobe In design text is better then Adobe Photoshop, i learnt how to add glow to my text to give it a professional look. I learnt how to erase the background off my images on Adobe Photoshop by using different tools such as the magic eraser etc. I learnt about the process of making my music magazines was how to save it as a Adobe Dialog file which you can then later open and edit afterwards also at the end we had to save the magazines as a PDF file which we then opened on Adobe Photoshop and save as a jpeg file.
Why I chose the genre Hip Hop? Hip Hop Swag defies the genre Hip-Hop. In further detail; a audience that reflect s and portrays the genres. I wanted my audience to be for my magazine to be young adults, as I did my further research I found out that Hip Hop is the genre that many teenagers and young adults follow and look up to. This was due to my research information when I surveyed the question, “What Genre Of Music Do You Listen To?”. My results showed me the younger age are attracted to the genres contained in my magazine. There are the age bracket that would buy a magazine based on Hip-Hop so it would benefit my media product to aim towards that age. The results showed that teenagers are attracted to genre Hip Hop, this is the reason I decided to choose the genre Hip Hop.
My Flat Plan ; Did i keep to my plan? Well, i tried to keep to my flat plan as much as possible, but during making my music magazine i had to make some changes because things didn’t look right. As i wanted to make my music magazine look as professional as possible, changes had to be made. On my front cover, the only i changed was the information on the left hand side and the reason to that was it looked to plain and didn’t really stand out enough so i changed some of the information. On my contents page what i changed was the layout of my writing, instead of having it across, i put all of my writing on the right hand side, the reason to that was because i looked through a lot of real hip hop magazines and their information (topics) were mostly on the right/left hand side, so i thought I'd do the same. I never changed anything to my double page spread plan because i was very confident i wanted it like that.
