UNION MINISTER
NARAYAN RANE
LOSES IMPORTANT

high court penalising
a Union minister is a
rare but refreshing
happening in the
country
. The Bombay
High Court has done just that. It
has ordered Union minister
Narayan Rane to pay a fine of Rs
10 lakh and demolish the illegal
construction he carried out in
his eight-storey plush bungalow
at Juhu. It was in March this
year that the Mumbai Municipal
Corporation asked Rane to re-
movetheunauthorisedconstruc-
tion. The Maha Vikas Aghadi
government which was then in
power had informed the high
court that it was withdrawing
the demolition notice served on
Rane, who was regarded as BJP’s
most potent weapon against the
previous government.
The High Court has given the
BMC two weeks’ time to carry
out the demolition but refused to
grant a week’s stay on the order’s
implementation on Rane’s re-
quest. After Kangana Ranaut’s
illegal structure, this is the sec-
ondhigh-profilecaseinMumbai.
In the actor’s case, though, the
BMC had to eat a humble pie.

Nabanna Abhiyan: WB BJP wakes
up from its political hibernation?
The BJP despite all its
might could not oust the
TMC in the Assembly
elections in 2021, but two
years ago in 2019, the
Saffron party had managed
a tally of 18 Lok Sabha
seats in West Bengal and
this was a rise of 16 seats
from its tally of two seats in
2014. Subsequently, the
BJP may not have reached
the magic three-figure mark
in the 2021 Assembly polls
but it rose from a mere 3
seats in 2016 to 77 in 2021
and established itself as a
formidable Opposition
in the state. However,
thereafter the BJP had
some dismal performances
in local body polls
JP’s recent Nabanna Abhi-
yan was witnessed after a lull
that lasted for more than a
year. The Saffron party had
put in all its might in West
Bengal’s last year crucial As-
sembly election and follow-
ing its post-poll performance,
the party, in the state, had
seen a lot of transformation.
However, with last Tues-
day’s action, it seems that the
BJP wants to put all that in
flashback mode and is raring
to go ahead with renewed vig-
our. The party’s Nabanna Ab-
hiyan was one of its biggest
campaigns in West Bengal in
recent times.
With a little over two years
left for the crucial Lok Sabha
election, the BJP again seems
to be upbeat and the national
leadership is also taking keen
interest in West Bengal’s po-
litical developments. With the
recent raids by the Enforce-
ment Directorate and sum-
moning of TMC leaders in
cases of alleged corruption,
on Ground Zero, the grass-
roots workers of the Saffron
partyhavebeenworkinghard
to mobilise the cadre and in-
duct youth into the party fold.
It may be recalled that dur-
ing a visit to West Bengal in
May 2022, Union Home Min-
ister Amit Shah had assured
state BJP leaders as well as
the cadre that he would di-
rectly monitor the party’s
activities in the state unit.
This, perhaps, has boosted
the cadre which was feeling
left out after the Assembly
election drubbing and the
subsequent “silence” of sorts
of the state unit leaders for
all these months.
The appointment of Sunil
Bansal as the West Bengal
observer has infused a lot of
zeal among the ranks. The
appointment and his visit
last month have boosted the
confidence of the state unit.
Also, “The videos of cash re-
covered in the ED raids
shown on the media repeat-
edly gave confidence to the
party cadre too and most be-
lieve that the state unit’s al-
legation against TMC has
been taken seriously by the
party’s central leadership.
It seems that the BJP’s Ben-
gal unit which was complete-
ly silent has again regained
its inertia. On Tuesday, with
Bansal in the state, the boost-
ed party had started its Na-
bannaAbhiyan.TheAbhiyan
was capable of bringing to-
gether all the top rung lead-
ers of the state unit together.
It seemed that the party lit-
erally woke up from its slum-
berinWB.However,stateBJP
leaders said it was not a “one-
day miracle” and that the
leadership had “been active
on Ground Zero”. Also, state
organisation secretary Ami-
tava Chakraborty, appointed
in October 2020, was involved
in building a “strong young
cadre base” across West Ben-
gal. Chakraborty, with his
RSS-ABVP background, had
worked and campaigned vig-
orously on the Centre’s wel-
fare schemes in West Bengal.
The party’s current leader-
ship combo also seems to be
settlingdownandisgradually
finding its stance. With the ap-
pointmentof SukantaMajum-
dar as the state unit’s chief in
September 2021, the party’s
top rung leaders earned lau-
rels from their bosses in Delhi
for their Abhiyan.
BJP’s national president
JP Nadda recently appointed
former Bihar minister Man-
gal Pandey the state in-
charge for West Bengal. The
party’s IT Cell chief Amit
Malviya is already working
with the state unit since No-
vember 2020, and national
secretary Asha Lakhra are
the co in-charges.
WHAT IS IN STORE?
With Bihar chief minister
Nitish Kumar severing ties
with BJP, the Saffron party
has again set its eyes on West
Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats
to compensate for the report-
ed loss in Bihar.
It may be recalled that the
BJP-led National Democratic
Alliance (NDA) had managed
to win 39 of the 40 parliamen-
tary seats in Bihar in 2019.
However, this time, BJP
, in or-
der to remain on top will have
to ensure an adequate number
of seats in West Bengal, Odis-
ha,Jharkhand,andTelangana.
WiththeNabannaAbhiyan,
the party workers who had
lost steam, seems to be a spir-
ited lot. A boosted BJP now
looks to be in an upbeat mood
especially with Amit Shah’s
recent visit which provided
fresh hopes to the state cadre
whichappeareddisillusioned.
The workers on the ground
now feel that Shah and then
Bansal did the needful to bol-
ster their faith and believe
thatthecentralleadershiphad
not taken a “soft approach”
towardstheTMCgovernment.
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY
THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL
B
It may be recalled that
during a visit to WB in
May 2022, Union HM
Amit Shah had assured
state BJP leaders as well as
the cadre that he would
directly monitor the party’s
activities in state unit. This,
perhaps, has boosted the
cadre which was feeling left
out after the Assembly
election drubbing and the
subsequent “silence” of
sorts of the state unit
leaders for all these months

Liquor scam: AAP

scam in Delhi, the
Bharatiya Janata Party
on Tuesday levelled a
fresh set of allegations
at the ruling party in the

Addressing a press
conference here, BJP
spokesperson Gaurav
Bhatia alleged that the
AAP gave the liquor
contract to its candi-
date Karanjit Singh
Lamba “ignoring all the
rules”.
“It has become clear
from the sting opera-
tion how Arvind Kejri-

tors. One of universal

leged.
Bhatia claimed that
no transparency was
maintained in the im-
plementation of the
new excise police
(which now stands
scrapped), and asked if
Kejriwal did not get
money from the “back-
door”. “Out of the writ-
ten off Rs 144 crores, Rs
66 crores belonged to
KS Lamba. No transpar-
ency
. Their only motive
is dishonesty. We want
to ask Kejriwal, did he
not get money from the
back door? When
Arvind Kejriwal makes
a statement, there are
no facts and evidence in
it. But when the
Bharatiya Janata Party
puts forth any point, it
keeps it with proof.
That’s why Kejriwal
doesn’t answer a single
question,” he said.

Wrong DOB of IAS

Ahtesham Siddiqui
Lucknow: Change in
the date of birth of a
senior IAS officer in Ut-
tar Pradesh bureaucra-
cy has caused a stir from
DOPT to Lucknow ap-
pointment department.
This is the latest case
related to Shahid Man-
jar Abbas Rizvi, a 2006
batch IAS officer, whose
dateof birthintheUttar
Pradesh government is
recorded as August 31,
1965. Accordingly, his
retirement will be on
August 31, 2025.
But his date of birth
has been wrongly re-
corded as August 31,
1961 in the Centre’s
DOPT records....accord-
ing to which his retire-
ment should have been
on August 31, 2021.
Work was going on in
DOPT to publish the
gradation list for the
year 2023 in which the
data of IAS officers
posted in all the state is
updated. However, the
officer in question is
currently in service.
When DOPT contacted
the appointment de-
partment of UP to con-
firm his birth, the
DOPT was told that in
all the records present
in UP, the date of birth
denoted is August 31,
1965. This raised a per-
tinent question as to
how did the record
change in DOPT?

said, When I was the

I asked her that since
my CM is Mamata Ba-

any magic.”
Remembering GC Ka-

Dhankhar said, “I had
campaigned for Rajen-

did magic that Rathore
never lost.” Interest-
ingly, hearing this, CM

Dhankhar continued, “I
learned this magic
from Devilal Bhairon

Singh Shekhawat was, I
am today. There is no
greater achievement for
me than this.”
He stressed the need
for political parties to

“Parliament and legis-

How can public repre-

he said. Dhankhar
thanked Speaker Joshi

Meanwhile, CM

how did you do magic? I

cian, so has there ever
been a greater magician
than me?” Listening to
this, Dhankhar burst in
laughter.
Gehlot further added,
“I made the first call
when you became the

Speaker Joshi said, “I

7 ICE CREAM FLAVOURS
7 ICE CREAM FLAVOURS
We Miss From Our Childhood
We Miss From Our Childhood
nother weekend,
another big family
brunch at the Caul-
dronSisterss’. This
time, our menu had
a theme…of all
things nostalgic.
From that school-inspired
tiffin box combination of
aloo parantha aam ka
achaar to canteen-wala sa-
mosa with a side of mango
bite and kismi bar tof-
fees, we made sure a
lot of those child-
hood memories
were laid on the
table that day. Of
course, this was
followed by our fa-
vourite ice-creams
in the end, some-
thing we want to talk
about in today’s blog.
As we, Ratzz Ritzzy, re-
membered those lovely days,
we realised it was our moth-
er who started building us
those ‘sweet’ memories. To
reach the autorickshaw
stand every time we went to
grandmother’s or the mar-
ket, we had to walk for about
ten minutes. Who likes any
sort of hard work at that age,
but bribed by ice-creams, we
girls never minded the task.
The legendary Orange
Bar had since been a pivotal
part of our lives. Sharing an
orange bar with a friend
while riding bicycles back
home was a thing back then
as well.
Next came those choco-
late cones which were con-
sidered a luxury
. Raise your
hand if you, too, happened
to quickly finish the cone so
you could reach the choco-
late piece at the end. As we
recall, Toddler-Ratzz once
got lucky when her choco-
late cone came half-filled
with chocolate instead of ice
cream. Our friends called it
an ‘achievement’ and we
couldn’t agree more.
Talking about chocolate,
who remembers Chocobar?
That darkness on the
outside hiding
all the sweet
goodness in-
side...nom nom…chocolate
and vanilla is one classic
combination that has never
gone out of fashion to date.
Having said that, as kids, we
secretly wished this choco
bar was filled with chocolate
instead of vanilla, making it
an even more intense affair
for our palates. It wasn’t too
long before our prayers were
answered and Feast entered
the markets.
Talking about weekends,
when the whole family
would go out to eat and end
the gala night with either
pan or ice cream, the mom-
mies in the group always
chose Cassatas and Kulfis.
Cassata was our mother’s
favourite, which she loving-
ly shared with us, especially
the spongy cake part.
Sundays without Sun-
dae? That was never
the case. Ritzzy is
still a lover of sun-
daes; one should
watch her enjoy the
colourful cups
topped with tutti-
frutti like a child.
Pepsicola was an-
other flavour we miss
dearly
. It wasn’t available
in Jaipur at the time, which
meant our annual holidays
in Mumbai had fixed even-
ing treats – Pepsicola. Long
slushy sticks filled with
coke-like tidbit…slurp slurp.
Psst, ice-creams made life
a lot better back then. Long
train and car journeys got
exciting because of popsi-
cles. Boring weddings where
adults socialised, the kids
found each other at the ice
cream counters. At such
gatherings of the 80s and
90s, traditionally, vanilla
was served with either choc-
olate or strawberry flavours.
Remember how kids used to
come up with their own DIY
Sundae cups using those fla-
vours? Ha-ha.
Lastly, can we get an
Amen for the Raspberry and
Mango Dolly? Today, we’ve
multiple options to choose
from creative artisanal ice
cream brands that make
decadent flavours. Regard-
less, we still miss the old
days when taste, aroma and
sense were simpler and
more flavorful.
How wonderful that a
little scoop of ice cream
can trigger so many memo-
ries at once. We’d love to
hear from you and learn
which have been your ever-
lasting ice-cream flavours.

TOP TWEETS UNION MINISTER NARAYAN RANE LOSES IMPORTANT COURT BATTLE high court penalising a Union minister is a rare but refreshing happening in the country . The Bombay High Court has done just that. It has ordered Union minister Narayan Rane to pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh and demolish the illegal construction he carried out in his eight-storey plush bungalow at Juhu. It was in March this year that the Mumbai Municipal Corporation asked Rane to re- movetheunauthorisedconstruc- tion. The Maha Vikas Aghadi government which was then in power had informed the high court that it was withdrawing the demolition notice served on Rane, who was regarded as BJP’s most potent weapon against the previous government. The High Court has given the BMC two weeks’ time to carry out the demolition but refused to grant a week’s stay on the order’s implementation on Rane’s re- quest. After Kangana Ranaut’s illegal structure, this is the sec- ondhigh-profilecaseinMumbai. In the actor’s case, though, the BMC had to eat a humble pie. A fter going through turbulent years of terrorism, Sri- nagar is taking small steps to put its bloody past behind for a better and peaceful future. Ghulam Nabi Azad’s return to pick up the threads after breaking away from the Con- gress points to the revival of the political process in the Valley . The Farooq Abdullah- led National Conference is also expected to participate in the elections whenever they are held. Hopefully, that wait won’t be endless. Politics is only one way to ensure participation of peo- ple who have for decades lived in fear and under suspicion. Themassexodusof Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley was a turning point after terror groups backed by Pakistan and jihadis grabbed control. Now that the nightmarish and obscurantist phase has ended, the other more impor- tant step is to bring the soci- ety to life through entertain- ment. The move will also give commercial activities a push and also bring Bollywood back to the Valley . SOUND OF MUSIC, NOT GUNFIRE IN VALLEY Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha took that step a few days back by inaugurating a multiplex, Srinagar’s first in 32 years. In the Eighties, Srinagar boasted of eight cinema halls before hardliners struck. The first of the three shows of the movie Laal Singh Chaddha was to be screened on Tuesday A Nabanna Abhiyan: WB BJP wakes up from its political hibernation? The BJP despite all its might could not oust the TMC in the Assembly elections in 2021, but two years ago in 2019, the Saffron party had managed a tally of 18 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal and this was a rise of 16 seats from its tally of two seats in 2014. Subsequently, the BJP may not have reached the magic three-figure mark in the 2021 Assembly polls but it rose from a mere 3 seats in 2016 to 77 in 2021 and established itself as a formidable Opposition in the state. However, thereafter the BJP had some dismal performances in local body polls JP’s recent Nabanna Abhi- yan was witnessed after a lull that lasted for more than a year. The Saffron party had put in all its might in West Bengal’s last year crucial As- sembly election and follow- ing its post-poll performance, the party, in the state, had seen a lot of transformation. However, with last Tues- day’s action, it seems that the BJP wants to put all that in flashback mode and is raring to go ahead with renewed vig- our. The party’s Nabanna Ab- hiyan was one of its biggest campaigns in West Bengal in recent times. With a little over two years left for the crucial Lok Sabha election, the BJP again seems to be upbeat and the national leadership is also taking keen interest in West Bengal’s po- litical developments. With the recent raids by the Enforce- ment Directorate and sum- moning of TMC leaders in cases of alleged corruption, on Ground Zero, the grass- roots workers of the Saffron partyhavebeenworkinghard to mobilise the cadre and in- duct youth into the party fold. It may be recalled that dur- ing a visit to West Bengal in May 2022, Union Home Min- ister Amit Shah had assured state BJP leaders as well as the cadre that he would di- rectly monitor the party’s activities in the state unit. This, perhaps, has boosted the cadre which was feeling left out after the Assembly election drubbing and the subsequent “silence” of sorts of the state unit leaders for all these months. The appointment of Sunil Bansal as the West Bengal observer has infused a lot of zeal among the ranks. The appointment and his visit last month have boosted the confidence of the state unit. Also, “The videos of cash re- covered in the ED raids shown on the media repeat- edly gave confidence to the party cadre too and most be- lieve that the state unit’s al- legation against TMC has been taken seriously by the party’s central leadership. It seems that the BJP’s Ben- gal unit which was complete- ly silent has again regained its inertia. On Tuesday, with Bansal in the state, the boost- ed party had started its Na- bannaAbhiyan.TheAbhiyan was capable of bringing to- gether all the top rung lead- ers of the state unit together. It seemed that the party lit- erally woke up from its slum- berinWB.However, stateBJP leaders said it was not a “one- day miracle” and that the leadership had “been active on Ground Zero”. Also, state organisation secretary Ami- tava Chakraborty, appointed in October 2020, was involved in building a “strong young cadre base” across West Ben- gal. Chakraborty, with his RSS-ABVP background, had worked and campaigned vig- orously on the Centre’s wel- fare schemes in West Bengal. The party’s current leader- ship combo also seems to be settlingdownandisgradually finding its stance. With the ap- pointmentof SukantaMajum- dar as the state unit’s chief in September 2021, the party’s top rung leaders earned lau- rels from their bosses in Delhi for their Abhiyan. BJP’s national president JP Nadda recently appointed former Bihar minister Man- gal Pandey the state in- charge for West Bengal. The party’s IT Cell chief Amit Malviya is already working with the state unit since No- vember 2020, and national secretary Asha Lakhra are the co in-charges. WHAT IS IN STORE? With Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar severing ties with BJP, the Saffron party has again set its eyes on West Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats to compensate for the report- ed loss in Bihar. It may be recalled that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had managed to win 39 of the 40 parliamen- tary seats in Bihar in 2019. However, this time, BJP , in or- der to remain on top will have to ensure an adequate number of seats in West Bengal, Odis- ha,Jharkhand, andTelangana. WiththeNabannaAbhiyan, the party workers who had lost steam, seems to be a spir- ited lot. A boosted BJP now looks to be in an upbeat mood especially with Amit Shah’s recent visit which provided fresh hopes to the state cadre whichappeareddisillusioned. The workers on the ground now feel that Shah and then Bansal did the needful to bol- ster their faith and believe thatthecentralleadershiphad not taken a “soft approach” towardstheTMCgovernment. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL B It may be recalled that during a visit to WB in May 2022, Union HM Amit Shah had assured state BJP leaders as well as the cadre that he would directly monitor the party’s activities in state unit. This, perhaps, has boosted the cadre which was feeling left out after the Assembly election drubbing and the subsequent “silence” of sorts of the state unit leaders for all these months ROBIN ROY The writer is Senior Journalist and former Managing Editor, First India

YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva SWEET MEMORIES SWEET MEMORIES 7 ICE CREAM FLAVOURS 7 ICE CREAM FLAVOURS We Miss From Our Childhood We Miss From Our Childhood nother weekend, another big family brunch at the Caul- dronSisterss’. This time, our menu had a theme…of all things nostalgic. From that school-inspired tiffin box combination of aloo parantha aam ka achaar to canteen-wala sa- mosa with a side of mango bite and kismi bar tof- fees, we made sure a lot of those child- hood memories were laid on the table that day. Of course, this was followed by our fa- vourite ice-creams in the end, some- thing we want to talk about in today’s blog. As we, Ratzz Ritzzy, re- membered those lovely days, we realised it was our moth- er who started building us those ‘sweet’ memories. To reach the autorickshaw stand every time we went to grandmother’s or the mar- ket, we had to walk for about ten minutes. Who likes any sort of hard work at that age, but bribed by ice-creams, we girls never minded the task. The legendary Orange Bar had since been a pivotal part of our lives. Sharing an orange bar with a friend while riding bicycles back home was a thing back then as well. Next came those choco- late cones which were con- sidered a luxury . Raise your hand if you, too, happened to quickly finish the cone so you could reach the choco- late piece at the end. As we recall, Toddler-Ratzz once got lucky when her choco- late cone came half-filled with chocolate instead of ice cream. Our friends called it an ‘achievement’ and we couldn’t agree more. Talking about chocolate, who remembers Chocobar? That darkness on the outside hiding all the sweet goodness in- side...nom nom…chocolate and vanilla is one classic combination that has never gone out of fashion to date. Having said that, as kids, we secretly wished this choco bar was filled with chocolate instead of vanilla, making it an even more intense affair for our palates. It wasn’t too long before our prayers were answered and Feast entered the markets. Talking about weekends, when the whole family would go out to eat and end the gala night with either pan or ice cream, the mom- mies in the group always chose Cassatas and Kulfis. Cassata was our mother’s favourite, which she loving- ly shared with us, especially the spongy cake part. Sundays without Sun- dae? That was never the case. Ritzzy is still a lover of sun- daes; one should watch her enjoy the colourful cups topped with tutti- frutti like a child. Pepsicola was an- other flavour we miss dearly . It wasn’t available in Jaipur at the time, which meant our annual holidays in Mumbai had fixed even- ing treats – Pepsicola. Long slushy sticks filled with coke-like tidbit…slurp slurp. Psst, ice-creams made life a lot better back then. Long train and car journeys got exciting because of popsi- cles. Boring weddings where adults socialised, the kids found each other at the ice cream counters. At such gatherings of the 80s and 90s, traditionally, vanilla was served with either choc- olate or strawberry flavours. Remember how kids used to come up with their own DIY Sundae cups using those fla- vours? Ha-ha. Lastly, can we get an Amen for the Raspberry and Mango Dolly? Today, we’ve multiple options to choose from creative artisanal ice cream brands that make decadent flavours. Regard- less, we still miss the old days when taste, aroma and sense were simpler and more flavorful. How wonderful that a little scoop of ice cream can trigger so many memo- ries at once. We’d love to hear from you and learn which have been your ever- lasting ice-cream flavours.
