CHIEF MINISTER ASHOK GEHLOT
HAPPY
BIRTHDAY
72
MR CM!
ADITI NAGAR
olitics changes with each
passing year and with that
the ‘Kathni-Karni’ of self
proclaimed ‘leaders’ chang-
es as well. Thus, the people
start loosing their faith and
trust in such politicians. However, there
seldom comes a leader whose politics
influences not just the party but an en-
tire region, whose reach is far beyond
his own territory, into the hearts of the
people of far away regions too and such
a leader can only come when one is
genuinely an altruistic person.
Such leaders are those who stand the
test of time, the penultimate measure of
a leader’s sincerity and commitment to
people. And one such leader is Ra-
jasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot,
who, through his sheer will and grit, has
not only become a national leader of
Congress party, but also a leader who
brings about various sections together
and whose policies and schemes pro-
vide a soothing balm to each and every
human.
Today
, marks the 72nd year in the life
of ‘Marawar’s Gandhi’ Ashok Gehlot,
who, it appears, is going to create his-
tory by becoming a four-time CM of the
desert State!
In fact, Gehlot’s recent experiment of
organising ‘Mehangai Rahat Camp’ at
grassroot level may prove a game chang-
er in his entire ‘comeback exercise’.
But reaching this milestone was nev-
er easy
. A leader has to go through sev-
eral ups and downs in his life as politi-
cian and yet continue on the desired
path, without being perturbed by the
downs or lows of the political sphere.
Starting from his college days, CM
Ashok Gehlot has effectively spent 50
years in public life, a no minor feat.
As the 3-time Chief Minister of Ra-
jasthan, Gehlot has presented a popular
Budget to every class and revolutionary
announcements were made in the budg-
et.Heimplementedmanyschemesinthe
StateamongwhichOPSisoneof themost
powerfulplan,which,ironically
,hasbeen
followed upon by the BJP government as
well! Wherever elections are held, this
scheme is included in the Congress man-
ifesto and in the upcoming Karnataka
pollstoo,theBJPgovernmenthasformed
a committee for this scheme.
The ‘simplistic leader’ that Gehlot is,
he always celebrates his birthday in a
muted tone and this time he has cho-
sen to celebrate with the tribals of
Rajasthan from Udaipur division.
But the underlying question re-
mains. Why does he take such
pains for them? Not because he is
representing a political party, not
merely because he holds a con-
stitutional office and definitely
not because he wants to earn
and make a name for himself;
but because there is an un-
derlying zeal for the better-
ment of the state and to
such a large-hearted in-
dividual and ‘leader’
of the State, First In-
dia says, “Happy
Birthday Mr CM!”

ond on the complaints of the
women wrestlers. The wrestlers
have, however, promised to keep
theirprotestsonuntilheiseither
sent to jail or the investigation is
completed, leaving the endgame
of this stir uncertain. The next
court hearing will be on May 5.
Earlier, speaking to his follow-
ers, Punia claimed that the Del-
hi Police have cut off electricity,
barricaded the protest site and
isn’t allowing food and water
and have asked the wrestlers to
end their protest after Delhi Po-
lice registered two FIRs against
Wrestling Federation of India
president and BJP MP Brij
Bhushan Sharan Singh, who
has been accused of sexual har-
assment and criminal intimida-
tion by seven women wrestlers.
However,itwasheart-wrench-
ing to see how legendary PT
Usha had “reacted” or how some
of the top names in the coun-
try’s sports fraternity who actu-
ally matter, chose to remain si-
lent even when the women wres-
tlers were protesting for the
second time in Delhi this year,
reiterating their allegations of
sexual harassment and intimi-
dation by WFI chief Brij Bhush-
an Sharan Singh.
PT Usha, who is also a Rajya
Sabha MP
, on Thursday came
down heavily on the wrestlers
whohadresumedtheirprotest.In
astatement,PTUshahadsaidthe
wrestlers’protestonthestreetsis
“tarnishing” India’s image. She
said the protest by the elite wres-
tlers equates to “indiscipline”.
“Wrestlers staging protests on
streets amounts to indiscipline.
Wrestlers’ protest on streets is
tarnishing the image of India,”
PT Usha said after the IOA’s Ex-
ecutive Committee meeting.
It may be recalled that in Feb-
ruary this year, Legendary ath-
leteandIndianOlympicAssocia-
tion (IOA) president P T Usha
broke down before the media al-
leging that illegal constructions
were being carried out at her
academy campus in Kozhikode
district and strangers were tres-
passing into the property posing
a security threat to the inmates.
Addressing a press confer-
ence in New Delhi, she said
those at the Usha School of Ath-
letics had been facing such har-
assment and security issues for
some time and it has intensified
after she became the Rajya Sab-
ha Member.
Notwithstanding the fact that
the sprint-queen may have felt
extremely bad on that day after
having brought so many laurels
for the country, her comments
on the protesting wrestlers
against alleged sexual harass-
ment had sent shock ripples
across the nation. People across
walks of life were shocked to see
how a former Olympian could
make such a statement?
But on Friday
, the protesting
womenwrestlersfoundgoodsup-
portfromOlympicgoldmedallist
Neeraj Chopra and called for
“quick action” from the authori-
tiesinordertoensurethatjustice
is served. Taking to Twitter,
Chopra called the issue, “sensi-
tive”. He went on to say
, “It hurts
me to see our athletes on the
streets demanding justice. They
have worked hard to represent
our great nation and make us
proud.Asanation,wearerespon-
sible for safeguarding the integ-
rity and dignity of every individ-
ual, athlete or not. What’s hap-
pening should never happen.”
SANIA SUPPORT A BOOST
Also, ace tennis player Sania
Mirza backed the wrestlers’ pro-
test. “As an athlete but more as
a woman this is too difficult to
watch… They’ve brought lau-
rels to our country and we have
all celebrated them ... if you
have done that then it’s time to
now stand with them in this dif-
ficult time too... This is a highly
sensitive matter and serious al-
legations. I hope whatever the
truth is justice is served… soon-
er rather than later,” she urged.
But till the time this article
was written, the biggies of In-
dian cricket like Sachin Ten-
dulkar, Rohit Sharma and Virat
Kohli had not mentioned a word
to boost the morale of the pro-
testing women wrestlers.
It may be recalled that Sachin
Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya
Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Anil
Kumble,SureshRainaweresome
of the renowned names from the
Indian cricket fraternity who
tweeted on farmers’ protest and
hence the entire country expect-
ed top cricketers to stand with
the protesting women wrestlers
especially when the matter is a
very sensitive one.

WRESTLERS’ PROTEST
NOW, BRIJ’S TUKDE GANG SHOCKER; PT USHA
ON MAT OVER ‘TARNISH IMAGE’ COMMENT
I WOULD RESIGN
IF PARTY ASKS
ME TO..., SAYS
BRIJ BHUSHAN
E
ROBIN ROY
The writer is Senior Journalist and
former Managing Editor, First India
WFI president and BJP MP
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh,
who has been accused by
female wrestlers of sexual
harassment, on Monday said
that he would resign ‘if his
party asked him to’. “If my
party asks me to resign, I will
resign...Forces involved in
‘Tukde Tukde gang’, Shaheen
Bagh, ‘Kisaan Andolan’ seem
to be involved in it (Wrestlers’
protest), I am not their target,
party (BJP ) is their target,
these athletes are paid. Pro-
test is expanding like Shaheen
Bagh, they want to divide UP
and Haryana”, Singh told. Ear-
lier in the day, Brij Bhushan
had said that all activity in the
sport had come to a standstill
in the last four months due
to protests by the
country’s top wrestlers.
AFTER JANUARY, WHY DID THE WRESTLERS
RESUME THE DEMONSTRATION IN APRIL?
The protesting wrestlers have cited delay from the government in releasing
the report of the committee that looked into the allegations (of sexual
harassment against Brij Bhushan), loss of faith in the committee, and the
absence of action against Brij Bhushan, of which they had been assured in
January. The protesting women wrestlers have also expressed unhappiness
over the fact that the WFI had resumed its activities in spite of the ongoing
probe, and have alleged that Brij Bhushan was still actively calling the shots,
evidenced by the fact that the first national tournament since the controversy
broke took place in his backyard in Gonda.
WHAT ARE THE
ACCUSATIONS?
The wrestlers have alleged
financial mismanagement and
arbitrariness in the functioning of
the WFI. But the gravest allegation
has been that of sexual harassment.
The complainants have cited inci-
dents that took place as early as in
2012 to as recently as in 2022, and
claimed some of them occurred at
Brij Bhushan’s official MP’s bun-
galow in the national Capital and
during tournaments in India and
abroad. One of the complainants,
it was mentioned in the Supreme
Court on Tuesday, is a minor.
WHO IS BRIJ
BHUSHAN?
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh,
has been a six-time MP, hav-
ing won the Gonda Lok Sabha
seat in 1991 and 1999, Balram-
pur in 2004, and Kaiserganj in
2009, 2014, and 2019. He was a
candidate of the BJP in all these
elections except in 2009, when
he won on an SP ticket. Hailing
from Gonda, Brij, 66, according
to his 2019 election affidavit,
was named in the Babri Masjid
demolition case. He has been
involved with wrestling in sev-
eral administrative roles — as
president of WFI, vice-president
of Asian Wrestling Federation,
a member of the government’s
Mission Olympic Cell.
WHAT ARE THE
DEMANDS?
They want him to be arrested un-
der the POCSO Act as one of the
complainants is a minor. In January,
the govt persuaded the protesting
wrestlers to call off their protest
by forming an Committee, which
was tasked with looking into the
allegations. The six-member panel
led by Mary Kom, was given four
weeks to come up with its findings.
However, it submitted its report
only in the first week of April. Govt
declared ongoing process for WFI
polls, scheduled for May 7 as null
and void, instructed IOA to form an
ad hoc committee that would
conduct polls in 45 days,
and also manage WFI’s
day-to-day affairs
until new members
take charge.

decisive action against

caste and religion,”
read the Congress elec-

Mangaluru: Tuesday
was the second day of
CM Ashok Gehlot’s vis-
it to Karnataka, and ad-
dressing the media at
Mangalore, Gehlot once
again attacked the BJP
and the Central govern-
ment.
Chief Minister
Ashok Gehlot has
termed the BJP govern-
ment in Karnataka as
the most corrupt gov-
ernment in the country
.
“There is no govern-
ment in any other state
in the country as cor-
rupt as the government
in Karnataka. Here the
people have made up
their mind that the Con-
gress government has
to be formed,” CM said.
Chief Minister Ge-
hlot said, “Due to the
schemes and works, the
Rajasthan government
is being discussed in
the whole country. We
have implemented Chi-
ranjeevi scheme of Rs
25 lakh insurance, gas
cylinder for 500, 100

Right to health, old pen-
sion scheme in Ra-
jasthan. As soon as the
government is formed
in Karnataka, the
schemes of Rajasthan
will be implemented in
Karnataka as well,” he
said.
Gehlot said that BJP
does not have any mod-
el of development.
“They have only one
model to topple the
elected governments
through horse trading.
There is a government
of nationalist forces at
the Centre who only
wear the crown of de-
mocracy but have no
faith in democracy and
the Constitution,” he
said.

z Your OPS scheme in
Rajasthan proved to
be a game changer in
Himachal Pradesh
Assembly elections
too. Now this scheme
is playing on voters’
minds in other States
as well. How do you
see that?
OPS was an issue there
is no two ways about it.
Now we have demand-
ed from PM Narendra
Modi to bring about the
Right to Social Securi-
ty Act and pass it in the
House. Rahul Gandhi’s
‘Nyay scheme’ wherein
people would have been
provided Rs 6,000 per
month, we have asked
him to bring that in a
law and pass it. Every
needy person has the
right to live, and to
raise a family. That is
why I think that the so-
cial security is such a
thing. We are giving
pension to one crore
people. Some states are
giving it less, some are
giving more money in
it. My thought is that
everyone in India
should get Nyay. We
brought Right to Health
and PM Modi could
take a step in this direc-
tion since there is im-
mense poverty in the
nation. people’s finan-
cial status is extremely
bad and treatment
costs have sky-rocket-
ed, the medicines have
become expensive and
PM should address this
issue.
z You said that as-
sembly elections
should be contested
on local issues. But
BJP is polarising the
situation. What
would you like to say
about that?
See the local issues are
of good governance.
They (BJP) do not have
that neither in Karna-
taka or in other states
where BJP is in power
or in Centre. Why
should we go on the is-
sues they are creating.
We will follow what we
are focussing on. We
will make the public
trust us that ultimately
our thought is for your
betterment and for the
development of the
state and so you should
cast vote keeping that
aspect in mind.
z You have claimed
that Congress is win-
ning in Karnataka.
Do you think this will
be a revival for Con-
gress and specially in
the general elections,
it will have an effect?
Definitely. If we win
here then there will be
effect on states like Ra-
jasthan, Madhya
Pradesh, Chattisgarh
and other states. And a
message will go in the
nation that it is in pub-
lic interest that Con-
gress wins. If we win
here then it will teach a
lesson to BJP. They will
hold a post-mortem for
the loss they incur and
perhaps they may bring
about a positive change
and the nation will get
benefit of that. That is
why, I think the people
should vote for Con-
gress.
z So will this be a
game changer in Ra-
jasthan?
Like I said, there is an
immense chance of the
government getting re-
peated in Rajasthan.
Wherever I have gone, I
have seen this. But spe-
cially this time among
the youth, in conjunc-
tion with the elderly and
all sections. There is ex-
traordinary enthusiasm
in the public. (FROM P1)

be fearless to face every chal-

proud.”
Maintaining a healthy

pressed a desire to inspire
young girls to be fearless and
pursue their dreams. She
shared, “I want them to say as
they look up to me, ‘if she can
do it, I can do it too.’” Sana
plans to use her platform to
motivate each and every girl to
be herself and follow her
dreams.
Criticism is an inevitable
part of life, and Yadav shared
that she handles it with resil-
ience and confidence. She
said, “Life is about learning.
No matter if I fail or lose or get
any sort of criticism, I gather
back all my energy, I get up,
and I fight and I succeed.”
The diva expressed her
heartfelt gratitude to Nikhil
Anand and Jagdeesh Chandra
for supporting her in her jour-

DAY

form when sun-
light from be-
hind you hits millions
of tiny round water
droplets in front of you
and bounces back to
your eyes.
As a sunbeam hits a
droplet at an angle, it
bends into the water and
separatesoutintoaspec-
trum of colors. Scien-
tists call the bending of
light “refracting.” The
colors separate because
each“color”of lighttrav-
els with a different
speed in water, or, for
that matter, any trans-
parent material that
light can travel through,
like glass in a prism.
When the colors hit
the back wall of the wa-
ter droplet, the angle is
now too shallow for
themtobendoutintothe
air, so they reflect back
into the water droplet
and return to its en-
trance wall. From there,
the colors can bend out
again into air and reach
your eye.
As you look at these
droplets, the different
colors happen to bunch
up at a slightly different
angles, and each color
formsthecircularrimof
a cone with your eye at
the tip of the cone. And,
voila, you have your own
personal rainbow.
The droplets that send
the colors to your eye
cannotsendthemtoany-
one else, so even though
everyone near you sees
the same rainbow at a
distance, each person re-
ally sees their own
slightly different rain-
bow. It’s all in the eye of
the beholder.
For rainbows to form,
the shape of the water
droplets has to be very
close to a sphere for all
of them to bend and re-
flect the colors in har-
mony
. This happens for
verysmalldroplets,such
as a fine mist, or just af-
ter a rain shower when
the air is just moist. As
the droplets get larger,
gravity distorts their
shape and the rainbow
vanishes.
A rainbow is not phys-
ically present where it
appears to be, similar to
your image in a mirror.
So, I’m sorry to say that
you can never actually
reach your rainbow.
And, alas, nobody can
ever find that pot of
gold. But you can create
your own rainbow.
O
ne experiment you can
try in summer is to turn
on a sprinkler hose using
the “mist” setting. Remember to
have the sun behind you. If you
create a fine mist screen in front
of you and look at your shadow,
you might see a rainbow.
It is not difficult to see colors,
but to see a full circle, you will
needsomepatienceandpractice,
just like scientists. So next time
you are on an airplane, grab the
window seat. If you are flying a
little above the cloud cover, keep
a lookout for the small shadow
of your plane on the clouds. That
means the sun is behind you.
The clouds are tiny water
droplets, so chances are you
may see a small circle of color
around the shadow of the aero-
plane. This phenomenon
is nicknamed “pilot’s glory,”
because pilots who fly all the
time and have a good view from
the cockpit have a better chance
of seeing it.
he legend goes that
there is a pot of
gold hidden at the
end of every rain-
bow. But is there re-
ally an “end” to a
rainbow, and can
we ever get to it?
Most us go through life
seeing rainbows only as
arches of color in the sky,
but that’s only half of what
is really a circle of color.
Normally, when you look
at a rainbow, the Earth’s ho-
rizon in front of you hides
the bottom half of the circle.
But if you are standing on a
mountain where you can see
both above and below you,
and the sun is behind you
and it is misty or has just
rained, chances are good
that you will see more of the
rainbow’s circle.
To see the full circle,
however, you will have to be
in an airplane, literally above
the clouds. Or you could cre-
ate your own rainbow. I am a
physicist, and I’ll explain
how to do that in a minute.
How to create and see a
circular rainbow
One experiment you can
try in summer is to turn on a
sprinkler hose using the
“mist” setting. Remember to
have the sun behind you. If
you create a fine mist screen
in front of you and look at
your shadow, you might see a
rainbow. It is not difficult to
see colors, but to see a full
circle, you will need some pa-
tience and practice, just like
scientists.
So next time you are on an
airplane, grab the window
seat. If you are flying a little
above the cloud cover, keep a
lookout for the small shadow
of your plane on the clouds.
That means the sun is be-
hind you.

may see a small circle
of color around the shadow

nomenon is nicknamed

MET GALA 2023
CITY FIRST
he 2023 Met Gala red
carpet is officially
underway at the
Metropolitan Muse-
um of Art in New
York City. This year,
the annual affair cel-
ebrates the exhibition “Karl
Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
The gala will honour the leg-
acy of Lagerfeld—the late
designer who helmed fashion
houses such as Chanel, Fen-
di, and his own eponymous
line—and raise funds for The
Met’s Costume Institute.
Just as important as the
exhibition, of course, is the
star-studded red carpet spec-
tacle that will take place as
guests make their way up the
famous Met steps. This year,
the A-list attendees were
asked to dress “in honour of
Karl”—meaning you’re
bound to see some custom
ensembles that pay homage
to Lagerfeld’s design signa-
tures, including his Chanel
tweeds and his own black-
and-white uniform.
This year’s official Met
Gala co-hosts were all pre-
sent, including Penélope
Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger
Federer, Dua Lipa,
and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
The event brought together
the best of actors like Pri-
yanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt,
singers, athletes, supermod-
els (including Naomi Camp-
bell), and artists. Alia Bhatt
has often made sure to make
heads turn with her fashion
game on several occasions.
She is a diva and there is no
denying this fact. Well, all
eyes were on her as she was
all set to make her MET Gala
debut this year. Tuesday
morning turned out to be a
great one for the fans of the
actress as she took to her In-
stagram space to treat her
fans and followers to several
photos from the red carpet.
Priyanka Chopra has been
grabbing all the limelight
ever since she walked the red
carpet of the MET Gala 2023.
She never fails to make her
fans speechless with her
stunning looks. As expected
the actress stole all the
limelightasshetwinned
with hubby Nick Jonas
in black attires. Among
the Indian stars who at-
tended the ball, busi-
nesswoman and arts
patron Isha Ambani
also graced the world's
biggest red-carpet event.
Like Alia Bhatt, Isha wore a
creation by Nepalese-Ameri-
can designer and
longtime collabo-
rator Prabal
Gurung.
She ditched
the classic gown
and slipped into
a reimagined
saree for the
occasion.

ADITI NAGAR olitics changes with each passing year and with that the ‘Kathni-Karni’ of self proclaimed ‘leaders’ chang- es as well. Thus, the people start loosing their faith and trust in such politicians. However, there seldom comes a leader whose politics influences not just the party but an en- tire region, whose reach is far beyond his own territory, into the hearts of the people of far away regions too and such a leader can only come when one is genuinely an altruistic person. Such leaders are those who stand the test of time, the penultimate measure of a leader’s sincerity and commitment to people. And one such leader is Ra- jasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who, through his sheer will and grit, has not only become a national leader of Congress party, but also a leader who brings about various sections together and whose policies and schemes pro- vide a soothing balm to each and every human. Today , marks the 72nd year in the life of ‘Marawar’s Gandhi’ Ashok Gehlot, who, it appears, is going to create his- tory by becoming a four-time CM of the desert State! In fact, Gehlot’s recent experiment of organising ‘Mehangai Rahat Camp’ at grassroot level may prove a game chang- er in his entire ‘comeback exercise’. But reaching this milestone was nev- er easy . A leader has to go through sev- eral ups and downs in his life as politi- cian and yet continue on the desired path, without being perturbed by the downs or lows of the political sphere. Starting from his college days, CM Ashok Gehlot has effectively spent 50 years in public life, a no minor feat. As the 3-time Chief Minister of Ra- jasthan, Gehlot has presented a popular Budget to every class and revolutionary announcements were made in the budg- et.Heimplementedmanyschemesinthe StateamongwhichOPSisoneof themost powerfulplan, which, ironically ,hasbeen followed upon by the BJP government as well! Wherever elections are held, this scheme is included in the Congress man- ifesto and in the upcoming Karnataka pollstoo, theBJPgovernmenthasformed a committee for this scheme. The ‘simplistic leader’ that Gehlot is, he always celebrates his birthday in a muted tone and this time he has cho- sen to celebrate with the tribals of Rajasthan from Udaipur division. But the underlying question re- mains. Why does he take such pains for them? Not because he is representing a political party, not merely because he holds a con- stitutional office and definitely not because he wants to earn and make a name for himself; but because there is an un- derlying zeal for the better- ment of the state and to such a large-hearted in- dividual and ‘leader’ of the State, First In- dia says, “Happy Birthday Mr CM!” P ND

Bhupender Yadav @byadavbjp SPIRITUAL SPEAK Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom. —Buddha TOP TWEETS ven as in an Instagram video, To- kyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia had accused the DelhiPoliceof cuttingelectricity and ration supplies at the wres- tlersprotestatJantarMantar, the DelhiPolicefiledtwoFIRsagainst Brijbhushan on Friday – one per- tained to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered un- der the POCSO Act, and the sec- ond on the complaints of the women wrestlers. The wrestlers have, however, promised to keep theirprotestsonuntilheiseither sent to jail or the investigation is completed, leaving the endgame of this stir uncertain. The next court hearing will be on May 5. Earlier, speaking to his follow- ers, Punia claimed that the Del- hi Police have cut off electricity, barricaded the protest site and isn’t allowing food and water and have asked the wrestlers to end their protest after Delhi Po- lice registered two FIRs against Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual har- assment and criminal intimida- tion by seven women wrestlers. However,itwasheart-wrench- ing to see how legendary PT Usha had “reacted” or how some of the top names in the coun- try’s sports fraternity who actu- ally matter, chose to remain si- lent even when the women wres- tlers were protesting for the second time in Delhi this year, reiterating their allegations of sexual harassment and intimi- dation by WFI chief Brij Bhush- an Sharan Singh. PT Usha, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP , on Thursday came down heavily on the wrestlers whohadresumedtheirprotest. In astatement,PTUshahadsaidthe wrestlers’protestonthestreetsis “tarnishing” India’s image. She said the protest by the elite wres- tlers equates to “indiscipline”. “Wrestlers staging protests on streets amounts to indiscipline. Wrestlers’ protest on streets is tarnishing the image of India,” PT Usha said after the IOA’s Ex- ecutive Committee meeting. It may be recalled that in Feb- ruary this year, Legendary ath- leteandIndianOlympicAssocia- tion (IOA) president P T Usha broke down before the media al- leging that illegal constructions were being carried out at her academy campus in Kozhikode district and strangers were tres- passing into the property posing a security threat to the inmates. Addressing a press confer- ence in New Delhi, she said those at the Usha School of Ath- letics had been facing such har- assment and security issues for some time and it has intensified after she became the Rajya Sab- ha Member. Notwithstanding the fact that the sprint-queen may have felt extremely bad on that day after having brought so many laurels for the country, her comments on the protesting wrestlers against alleged sexual harass- ment had sent shock ripples across the nation. People across walks of life were shocked to see how a former Olympian could make such a statement? But on Friday , the protesting womenwrestlersfoundgoodsup- portfromOlympicgoldmedallist Neeraj Chopra and called for “quick action” from the authori- tiesinordertoensurethatjustice is served. Taking to Twitter, Chopra called the issue, “sensi- tive”. He went on to say , “It hurts me to see our athletes on the streets demanding justice. They have worked hard to represent our great nation and make us proud.Asanation,wearerespon- sible for safeguarding the integ- rity and dignity of every individ- ual, athlete or not. What’s hap- pening should never happen.” SANIA SUPPORT A BOOST Also, ace tennis player Sania Mirza backed the wrestlers’ pro- test. “As an athlete but more as a woman this is too difficult to watch… They’ve brought lau- rels to our country and we have all celebrated them ... if you have done that then it’s time to now stand with them in this dif- ficult time too... This is a highly sensitive matter and serious al- legations. I hope whatever the truth is justice is served… soon- er rather than later,” she urged. But till the time this article was written, the biggies of In- dian cricket like Sachin Ten- dulkar, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had not mentioned a word to boost the morale of the pro- testing women wrestlers. It may be recalled that Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Anil Kumble,SureshRainaweresome of the renowned names from the Indian cricket fraternity who tweeted on farmers’ protest and hence the entire country expect- ed top cricketers to stand with the protesting women wrestlers especially when the matter is a very sensitive one. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL WRESTLERS’ PROTEST NOW, BRIJ’S TUKDE GANG SHOCKER; PT USHA ON MAT OVER ‘TARNISH IMAGE’ COMMENT I WOULD RESIGN IF PARTY ASKS ME TO..., SAYS BRIJ BHUSHAN E ROBIN ROY The writer is Senior Journalist and former Managing Editor, First India WFI president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused by female wrestlers of sexual harassment, on Monday said that he would resign ‘if his party asked him to’. “If my party asks me to resign, I will resign...Forces involved in ‘Tukde Tukde gang’, Shaheen Bagh, ‘Kisaan Andolan’ seem to be involved in it (Wrestlers’ protest), I am not their target, party (BJP ) is their target, these athletes are paid. Pro- test is expanding like Shaheen Bagh, they want to divide UP and Haryana”, Singh told. Ear- lier in the day, Brij Bhushan had said that all activity in the sport had come to a standstill in the last four months due to protests by the country’s top wrestlers. AFTER JANUARY, WHY DID THE WRESTLERS RESUME THE DEMONSTRATION IN APRIL? The protesting wrestlers have cited delay from the government in releasing the report of the committee that looked into the allegations (of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan), loss of faith in the committee, and the absence of action against Brij Bhushan, of which they had been assured in January. The protesting women wrestlers have also expressed unhappiness over the fact that the WFI had resumed its activities in spite of the ongoing probe, and have alleged that Brij Bhushan was still actively calling the shots, evidenced by the fact that the first national tournament since the controversy broke took place in his backyard in Gonda. WHAT ARE THE ACCUSATIONS? The wrestlers have alleged financial mismanagement and arbitrariness in the functioning of the WFI. But the gravest allegation has been that of sexual harassment. The complainants have cited inci- dents that took place as early as in 2012 to as recently as in 2022, and claimed some of them occurred at Brij Bhushan’s official MP’s bun- galow in the national Capital and during tournaments in India and abroad. One of the complainants, it was mentioned in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, is a minor. WHO IS BRIJ BHUSHAN? Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has been a six-time MP, hav- ing won the Gonda Lok Sabha seat in 1991 and 1999, Balram- pur in 2004, and Kaiserganj in 2009, 2014, and 2019. He was a candidate of the BJP in all these elections except in 2009, when he won on an SP ticket. Hailing from Gonda, Brij, 66, according to his 2019 election affidavit, was named in the Babri Masjid demolition case. He has been involved with wrestling in sev- eral administrative roles — as president of WFI, vice-president of Asian Wrestling Federation, a member of the government’s Mission Olympic Cell. WHAT ARE THE DEMANDS? They want him to be arrested un- der the POCSO Act as one of the complainants is a minor. In January, the govt persuaded the protesting wrestlers to call off their protest by forming an Committee, which was tasked with looking into the allegations. The six-member panel led by Mary Kom, was given four weeks to come up with its findings. However, it submitted its report only in the first week of April. Govt declared ongoing process for WFI polls, scheduled for May 7 as null and void, instructed IOA to form an ad hoc committee that would conduct polls in 45 days, and also manage WFI’s day-to-day affairs until new members take charge.

Shivendra Parmar Mangaluru: Tuesday was the second day of CM Ashok Gehlot’s vis- it to Karnataka, and ad- dressing the media at Mangalore, Gehlot once again attacked the BJP and the Central govern- ment. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has termed the BJP govern- ment in Karnataka as the most corrupt gov- ernment in the country . “There is no govern- ment in any other state in the country as cor- rupt as the government in Karnataka. During the visit, the students also met Birla who congratulated them for getting this op- portunity. Om Birla interacts with the 2nd batch of winners of ‘Samajh Sansad Ki’ competition at the Parliament House on Tuesday. z Your OPS scheme in Rajasthan proved to be a game changer in Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections too. Now this scheme is playing on voters’ minds in other States as well. How do you see that? OPS was an issue there is no two ways about it. Now we have demand- ed from PM Narendra Modi to bring about the Right to Social Securi- ty Act and pass it in the House. Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Nyay scheme’ wherein people would have been provided Rs 6,000 per month, we have asked him to bring that in a law and pass it. Every needy person has the right to live, and to raise a family. That is why I think that the so- cial security is such a thing. We are giving pension to one crore people. Some states are giving it less, some are giving more money in it. My thought is that everyone in India should get Nyay. We brought Right to Health and PM Modi could take a step in this direc- tion since there is im- mense poverty in the nation. people’s finan- cial status is extremely bad and treatment costs have sky-rocket- ed, the medicines have become expensive and PM should address this issue. z You said that as- sembly elections should be contested on local issues. But BJP is polarising the situation. What would you like to say about that? See the local issues are of good governance. They (BJP) do not have that neither in Karna- taka or in other states where BJP is in power or in Centre. Why should we go on the is- sues they are creating. We will follow what we are focussing on. We will make the public trust us that ultimately our thought is for your betterment and for the development of the state and so you should cast vote keeping that aspect in mind. z You have claimed that Congress is win- ning in Karnataka. Do you think this will be a revival for Con- gress and specially in the general elections, it will have an effect? Definitely. If we win here then there will be effect on states like Ra- jasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and other states. And a message will go in the nation that it is in pub- lic interest that Con- gress wins. If we win here then it will teach a lesson to BJP. They will hold a post-mortem for the loss they incur and perhaps they may bring about a positive change and the nation will get benefit of that. That is why, I think the people should vote for Con- gress. z So will this be a game changer in Ra- jasthan? Like I said, there is an immense chance of the government getting re- peated in Rajasthan. Wherever I have gone, I have seen this. But spe- cially this time among the youth, in conjunc- tion with the elderly and all sections. There is ex- traordinary enthusiasm in the public. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva R a i n b o w s form when sun- light from be- hind you hits millions of tiny round water droplets in front of you and bounces back to your eyes. As a sunbeam hits a droplet at an angle, it bends into the water and separatesoutintoaspec- trum of colors. Scien- tists call the bending of light “refracting.” The colors separate because each“color”of lighttrav- els with a different speed in water, or, for that matter, any trans- parent material that light can travel through, like glass in a prism. When the colors hit the back wall of the wa- ter droplet, the angle is now too shallow for themtobendoutintothe air, so they reflect back into the water droplet and return to its en- trance wall. From there, the colors can bend out again into air and reach your eye. As you look at these droplets, the different colors happen to bunch up at a slightly different angles, and each color formsthecircularrimof a cone with your eye at the tip of the cone. And, voila, you have your own personal rainbow. The droplets that send the colors to your eye cannotsendthemtoany- one else, so even though everyone near you sees the same rainbow at a distance, each person re- ally sees their own slightly different rain- bow. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. For rainbows to form, the shape of the water droplets has to be very close to a sphere for all of them to bend and re- flect the colors in har- mony . This happens for verysmalldroplets, such as a fine mist, or just af- ter a rain shower when the air is just moist. As the droplets get larger, gravity distorts their shape and the rainbow vanishes. A rainbow is not phys- ically present where it appears to be, similar to your image in a mirror. So, I’m sorry to say that you can never actually reach your rainbow. And, alas, nobody can ever find that pot of gold. But you can create your own rainbow. O ne experiment you can try in summer is to turn on a sprinkler hose using the “mist” setting. Remember to have the sun behind you. If you create a fine mist screen in front of you and look at your shadow, you might see a rainbow. It is not difficult to see colors, but to see a full circle, you will needsomepatienceandpractice, just like scientists. So next time you are on an airplane, grab the window seat. If you are flying a little above the cloud cover, keep a lookout for the small shadow of your plane on the clouds. That means the sun is behind you. The clouds are tiny water droplets, so chances are you may see a small circle of color around the shadow of the aero- plane. This phenomenon is nicknamed “pilot’s glory,” because pilots who fly all the time and have a good view from the cockpit have a better chance of seeing it. he legend goes that there is a pot of gold hidden at the end of every rain- bow. But is there re- ally an “end” to a rainbow, and can we ever get to it? Most us go through life seeing rainbows only as arches of color in the sky, but that’s only half of what is really a circle of color. Normally, when you look at a rainbow, the Earth’s ho- rizon in front of you hides the bottom half of the circle. But if you are standing on a mountain where you can see both above and below you, and the sun is behind you and it is misty or has just rained, chances are good that you will see more of the rainbow’s circle. To see the full circle, however, you will have to be in an airplane, literally above the clouds. Or you could cre- ate your own rainbow. I am a physicist, and I’ll explain how to do that in a minute. How to create and see a circular rainbow One experiment you can try in summer is to turn on a sprinkler hose using the “mist” setting. Remember to have the sun behind you. If you create a fine mist screen in front of you and look at your shadow, you might see a rainbow. It is not difficult to see colors, but to see a full circle, you will need some pa- tience and practice, just like scientists. So next time you are on an airplane, grab the window seat. This year, the annual affair cel- ebrates the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The gala will honour the leg- acy of Lagerfeld—the late designer who helmed fashion houses such as Chanel, Fen- di, and his own eponymous line—and raise funds for The Met’s Costume Institute. Just as important as the exhibition, of course, is the star-studded red carpet spec- tacle that will take place as guests make their way up the famous Met steps. This year, the A-list attendees were asked to dress “in honour of Karl”—meaning you’re bound to see some custom ensembles that pay homage to Lagerfeld’s design signa- tures, including his Chanel tweeds and his own black- and-white uniform. This year’s official Met Gala co-hosts were all pre- sent, including Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
