8. Changes to A Levels Most subjects will be reduced from six units to four in order to reduce the burden of assessment. The introduction of ‘stretch and challenge’ at A2 to better prepare students for higher education and employment. A* grade will be introduced to the grading of A level (A2 not AS) The A* grade will be first awarded in 2010.
10. Diplomas The Diploma is a new qualification that combines theoretical study with practical experience and is being rolled out over the next five years. By 2011, there will be 17 Diploma subjects available in England. All Diplomas will require students to achieve a minimum standard in English, mathematics and ICT, complete a project and do a minimum of 10 days’ work experience.
29. Expansion of Apprenticeships Apprenticeships combine paid work with on-the-job training, qualifications and progression. Around 130,000 employers now offer 180 different types of Apprenticeships such as hospitality, media, retail, accounting, childcare and local government; as well as subjects like construction, engineering and business administration Apprenticeships funding planned to increase to over £1 billion by 2010-11. From 2013, entitlement to an Apprenticeship place for all suitably qualified young people to be introduced.

Implications of Apprenticeships Getting paid while you train will be a major incentive for young people who are NEET (Not in Employment Education or Training) Gaining experience within a chosen industry will help students secure a job afterwards Apprenticeships can help target kinesthetic learners who learn by doing rather than reading and listening
