The University of Texas at Arlington installed the first extensive green roof in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 2008. The 1000 square foot roof was researched and designed by professor David Hopman and tests two industry standard roofing systems and plant palettes. One side uses a monolithic roofing system donated by American Hydrotech, while the other uses a modular tray system donated by Westin Solutions. The roof provides a test of components and plants needed to make future green roofs in the area successful, using a variety of native and adapted species rather than relying on a narrow palette. Ongoing monitoring is analyzing plant performance over multiple growing seasons.
