  1. We’re starting a really fun unit – what do you suppose is the answer?
  2. What does THAT mean? Let’s break it down into the 5 Ws…..you will all be responsible for knowing these; I will be asking you to show that you know them.De-construct the medal statement and define some of the wording. After last W: let’s take a look at some book covers of past Caldecott winners – artist work in many different styles and with different media. Have students name some media they have worked with in art class.
  3. Point out caption info – author and illustrator are one and the same here – watch to see if any are differentNotice precision and realism with the ducks; softness of watercolor in the sky
  4. Point out differences in styles – can see the edges of the woodcut and paper – color choice – notice multiple media for Golem – refer back to “distinguished” excellence –
  5. Discuss contrast – what do you notice? Perspective; layout (design with stars, vertical title, etc).Of all the books published in each year, these rose to the top
  6. This watercolor looks very different from Madeline’s Rescue; Sick Day has different author; more mixed media
  7. Began illustrating children’s books around 1874.Based his books on popular nursery rhymes, folk songs, stories, and poems.Printed largely in color with sepia sketches.Pictures full of movement and humor.Let’s look at one book in particular -
  8. Ask about movement and humor – story about a man on a runaway horse – appealing to children.
  9. A double-page spread – new vocab term to know – what is happening?
  10. American Library Association wanted to promote picture books; decided to create an award similar to the Newbery Award. Award named after Randolph Caldecott; his illustration from this book is on the medal.Chosen by a committee made up of librarians; changes every year. They read thousands of books and have lots of discussions before they vote.
