Abstract
Upregulation of lipogenesis is a hallmark of cancer and blocking the lipogenic
pathway is known to cause tumor cell death by apoptosis. We have also shown that
resveratrol was capable of blocking the lipogenic gene expression in CSCs and
significantly suppressed their ability to generate DCIS in animals, which provides us

Abstract
Dietary phytochemicals as adjuvants have been suggested to play important roles in
enhancing chemotherapeutic potential owing to multitargeted chemopreventive
properties and lack of substantial toxicity.. The combined treatment of resveratrol and
clofarabine produced a synergistic antiproliferative effect. Taken together, the data
provide evidence that the synergistic antiproliferative effect of resveratrol and
clofarabine is linked to the inhibition of Akt and Sp1 activities, and suggest that this
combination may have therapeutic value in treatment of malignant mesothelioma.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is defined as imbalance between the production and destruction of
reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study was to investigate whether resveratrol
could protect human endothelial cells against hydrogen peroxide damage in vitro. In
this in vitro study on human coronary endothelial cells, the effects of resveratrol on
the glutathione content in human coronary endothelial cells in vitro were evaluated
with high performance liquid chromatography. The effects of resveratrol on protein
expression of the glutamate cysteine ligase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione
reductase enzymes were evaluated with the Western blot method. Resveratrol
increased the reduced glutathione contents significantly (p < 0.05). Resveratrol
increased protein expression of the glutamate cysteine ligase, glutathione
peroxidase-1 and glutathione reductase enzymes (p < 0.05). All data supported each
other and suggested that resveratrol had a protective effect against human coronary
artery endothelial cell damage. It is thought that these results could pave the way to
the new therapeutic approaches to protect against oxidative stress that develops in
cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have demonstrated the cancer protective effects of dietary agents and
other natural compounds isolated from fruits, soybeans, and vegetables on neoplasia. Studies
have also revealed the potential for these natural products to be combined with chemotherapy or
radiotherapy for the more effective treatment of cancer. In this paper we discuss the potential for
targeting the DNA base excision repair enzyme APE1/Ref-1 using dietary agents such as soy
isoflavones, resveratrol, curcumin, and the vitamins ascorbate and α-tocopherol. We also discuss
the potential role of soy isoflavones in sensitizing cancer cells to the effects of radiotherapy. A
comprehensive review of the dual nature of APE1/Ref-1 in DNA repair and redox activation of
cellular transcription factors, NF-κB and HIF-1α, is also discussed. Further research efforts
dedicated to delineating the role of APE1/Ref-1 DNA repair versus redox activity in sensitizing
cancer cells to conventional treatment are warranted.

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein plays an important role in the development of hepatic
steatosis in patients with chronic HCV infection. Treatment of C57BL/6 mice infected with HCV
core recombinant adenoviruses with resveratrol significantly decreased hepatic triacylglycerols
(TAG) while the serum TAG level was unaffected. RT-PCR and Western blotting showed that
HCV core protein attenuated the expression of Sirt1 and PPAR-α, which would be reversed by
resveratrol. This was also confirmed in primary mouse hepatic cells infected with HCV core
protein expressing adenovirus. Thus, resveratrol may prevent against hepatic steatosis by
blocking the inhibited expression of Sirt1 and PPAR-α induced by HCV core protein.
