INTEGRATED OPEN PIT
COAL MINE PLANNING
                              WORKSHOP

                27 - 28 November 2012
                 Global Prospectus Training Centre,
                  366 Pretoria Avenue, Randburg

SETA Accreditation No. 2502
OVERVIEW
Effective openpit mine planning can be challenging in today’s environment of increased demand for productivity, competition,
commodity price fluctuations, rapid growth in overseas markets, equipment scarcity, and the critical shortage of skills in the
mining industry.

This course deals with the theoretical principles and practical methodologies associated with openpit coal mine planning. Openpit
mine planning is a process entailing elements of design, scheduling and evaluation. As part of the planning process a range of
issues have to be considered including sustainability, statutory requirements and community expectations, scheduling, equipment
selection, cost estimation and economic evaluation, pre-feasibility studies and risk analysis. This course will provide tools and
techniques to support effective medium to long-term decision-making, based on managing cost and risk

                                                                  BENEFITS OF ATTENDING

• Elements effective of mine planning
• Effectively undertake systematic open pit mine planning
• Rehabilitation planning and design
• Evaluate the importance of haul road design and maintenance

Integrated Open Pit Coal Mine Planning

  • 1. THINKING BEYOND THE OBVIOUS INTEGRATED OPEN PIT COAL MINE PLANNING WORKSHOP 27 - 28 November 2012 Global Prospectus Training Centre, 366 Pretoria Avenue, Randburg SETA Accreditation No. 2502
  • 2. OVERVIEW Effective openpit mine planning can be challenging in today’s environment of increased demand for productivity, competition, commodity price fluctuations, rapid growth in overseas markets, equipment scarcity, and the critical shortage of skills in the mining industry. This course deals with the theoretical principles and practical methodologies associated with openpit coal mine planning. Openpit mine planning is a process entailing elements of design, scheduling and evaluation. As part of the planning process a range of issues have to be considered including sustainability, statutory requirements and community expectations, scheduling, equipment selection, cost estimation and economic evaluation, pre-feasibility studies and risk analysis. This course will provide tools and techniques to support effective medium to long-term decision-making, based on managing cost and risk BENEFITS OF ATTENDING • Understand the importance of data verification and validation • Elements effective of mine planning • Effectively undertake systematic open pit mine planning • Rehabilitation planning and design • Evaluate the importance of haul road design and maintenance • Employ Cost drivers in open pit planning • Describe more specialised mining techniques WHO SHOULD ATTEND • Mine planning engineers • Mining Engineers • Technical personnel • Planning Engineers • Contract estimators • Design Engineers • Mine surveyors • Rock Engineers • Engineering Geologists • Drill and Blast Engineers • Geotechnical Engineers • Mine Managers EXPERT FACILITATORS Ian Hammond Consultant, SRK Consulting Ian Hammond has been involved in the mining industry for the past 17 years in the capacity of various leadership positions. He holds a bachelor of sciences degree, a graduate diploma in civil engineering and an MBA from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. The role played by Ian in South Africa includes project development and management which are complemented by his excellent communication, comprehension and learning skills that enabled him to develop companies and improve profitability. Ian has established three companies in his career thus far and fully managed these companies to provide environmental solutions to heavy industries in South Africa. Having worked in the industry for a number of years, his skills are currently at an optimum level as he is familiar with the challenges faced by waste producing companies. He understands the business related environmental concerns posed by day-to-day activities and functions as a solution provider to these challenges and issues faced. Morongwa Mothengu Senior Mining Engineer, SRK Consulting Morongwa has been involved in the field of Mining Engineering.
