  1. Business Markets are in Transition Market transitions are history constantly repeating itself. Transitions occur continually and the major ones lead to the complete disruption of markets, industries and society in general. Disruptions fundamentally change everything. Transitions can make or break businesses. And markets in transition are tremendous opportunities – to gain additional share and create new revenue streams. Conversely, there’s major risk in missing transitions. You’ll lose ground to the competition that’s been paying attention and changing the playing fields in your industry. Information technology and communications have been the most powerful disruptive forces in recent history. IT during the last 50 years has driven massive transitions in all aspects of life. Look no further than the Internet to see the most dynamic example of the power of IT. Among today’s important disruptive technologies are: Mobility, the Internet of Things, and cloud. Among the key transitions happening and changing markets, are: Modern work is mobile: And mobility is essential. Computing today must be mobile. Approximately 25 years ago, personal computer stepped up to a whole new level of value and importance with the advent of local area networks. Through client/server computing, people became much more efficient and productive. Likewise today, with the advent of technologies to support mobile work, we’ve moved light years beyond to an even greater levels of business efficiency and productivity. Mobility is fundamental to how companies and organizations need to work today – tools, information and resource must be available to employees wherever and whenever they happen to be. Business happens faster than ever. Mobility makes that possible. The Fusion of IT & Mobility: In the past, IT professionals were the exclusive buyers of IT and connectivity. Technology was purchased as a set of various components from a multitude of different suppliers. Most of it needed to be implemented and integrated. Today, IT organizations are no longer the sole buyers. Business units and business professionals have joined the ranks and they’re looking for simplicity as well as completely integrated solutions to support business needs and outcomes. Today’s IT supply chain isn’t built to support business buyers. It needs to shift from resellers and retailers supporting a component SKU-based distribution model, to suppliers that sell completely integrated solutions. Communications to support mobility must be at the core. IT and mobile communications need to come together into a complete business solution. Rogers will lead the way in creating a one-stop reselling model for IT and fully integrated, secure and reliable communications. Leapfrog Technology Adoption: Do you want evolution or revolution? Re-inventing your business processes to support mobile work might be a slower and gradual pace. Or you may want to get there right away. It’s ultimately the choice of any customer. Rogers supports both approaches, but we believe leapfrog is definitely the way to go. We deliver leapfrog. We are innovators and not tied to legacy communications and IT. And we recognize mobility and business outcomes are essential. Leapfrog gets you there quickly and cost effectively.
  2. Why Should You Care? Why is it so important to understand transitions and the power of disruptive technologies? Because you risk your business survival by standing still. A study, published in the Journal of the Royal Science Interface in April 2015 examined a comprehensive database of more than 25 000 publicly traded North American companies, from 1950 to 2009. It concludes publicly traded companies have about a 10-year lifespan. The U.S. department of Labour estimates about half of all new companies survive five years or more and about one-third those survive 10 years or more. Many companies fail because they are unable to catch transitions – they were too slow to move and the competition redefined and captured new markets and opportunities. You need to get it right – then act to create disruptions in order to survive and thrive as a leader. Today, emerging technologies such as cloud, mobility, IoT, digital and real-time analytics are disrupting forces that innovative companies are leveraging to reinvent their businesses. Innovators changing the playing field in their industries and creating entirely new business rules and models. Think of companies like Amazon, Google, Netflix, Apple and iTunes, and many others who through their innovation with IT entirely disrupted business models and/or created completely new ones. Today, you need to be thinking about transitions…moving away from old business processes and approaches to create greater agility and foster innovation within your organizations: To move away from IT strategies that focus on the simplistic purchase of hardware & components to a more strategic approach of focusing on the necessary business outcomes you need to achieve through your IT investments. To remove the headache and complexity of day-to-day operational firefighting that eats up 80% of IT organizational budgets and effort, to a much simpler as-a-service model of IT provisioning and services delivery. To evolve from the traditional OPEX/CAPEX constraints of IT purchases that keep innovation moving at a snail’s pace to a more efficient later technology IT provisioning as-a-service approach that allows you to rapidly leapfrog to innovation.
  3. It’s Time to Re-Think Your Enterprise Here’s a picture of today’s modern workplace – probably not the illustration you might have imagined. You see in the illustration along the bottom of this slide that there are four key technology pillars that are foundational to how enterprises are transforming themselves to support modern work: Using Business Collaboration technologies that connect people so that they can be more productive, efficient and innovative Using Data Centre and Cloud technologies that support distributed computing and the full sharing of and access to important business information and tools Using Networks for Business that are reliable and high performance Using IoT that makes the endpoints of computing and connectivity smarter, providing automation, management, and real-time decision making And it all needs to be wrapped into holistic security fabric that works as a collective whole that’s greater than the sum of individual parts of IT security to ensure risk is always mitigated and averted before these become threats and breaches, which, if these do occur, are minimized and corrected quickly. Things aren’t what they used to be in today’s enterprise workspaces. Individual office spaces at many companies are disappearing because employees are no longer tethered to a desk. On the contrary…they need to be where and when business happens. Employees are always on the move, even within the brick and mortar walls of a company. Collaboration is greater than ever and is all about being productive and doing things better. It’s a key to how organizations achieve innovation. An article in Forbes magazine in 2015 cited research from the University of Tennessee that found, “innovation and collaboration are not mutually exclusive; they feed and build upon each other. Innovation happens through collaboration. And the best organizations are not only harnessing innovation from their employees, but also from outsiders such as suppliers or competitors.” Collaboration requires connectivity both within and outside of your buildings and offices. Companies are creating new types of open model workspaces, featuring technologies to support collaborative and distributed styles. It’s also about utilizing space efficiently and creating environments that support how differently employees today need to work. To help customer get there, Rogers specifically focuses on four essential technology areas: Business Collaboration: Rogers will be the 1st in Canada to launch a mobile first communications solution that truly allow businesses to get the features of desk phones on mobile phones – we will first start with small business and then for all markets. Data Centre & Cloud: Our facilities are world-class and predominantly “co-location” services. The market is evolving and we’re moving to the “Infrastructure as a Service  & Software as a Service,” spaces powered by “cloud.” Networks for Business: It’s all about business-grade and high-performance communications and connectivity. For our customers - security is an inherent feature and function of our communications services and we are the networking company. All of our products have security embedded and we offer cyber-security solutions. Internet of Things: Companies are leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) to intelligently connect devices and solutions to automate processes, improve user experiences, and create intelligence. Through smarter devices IoT can deliver new tailored experiences based on learning customer behaviours. We are Canada’s #1 IoT market leader.
  4. Leapfrog to the Future Leapfrog is a tremendous advantage and the way to: Leave your competition behind: By using technology as your competitive differentiator, to be the market disruptor, and use it to de-construct and re-construct your business processes with IT as the foundation. It’s how you get to greater productivity, efficiency and agility. Leverage new business insights: Using the power of “as-a-service” solutions and IoT you can turn a hill of data into a mountain of intelligence that help you understand your customers and your own operations. Automation of tedious tasks: IT solutions such as IoT take the error-prone human element out of traditional manual tasks…things like tracking and logging…and makes these automated and reliable. It’s a better way to achieve business outcomes that support requirements for compliance and both essential and mandated monitoring. Increase productivity: Some businesses can’t afford the large expense of an in-house organization to manage IT. Others who have a professional team are frustrated that these groups spend too much time on low-value tactical operations and not enough on high-value strategic business innovation. As-a-service IT solutions take on many of these management tasks so that IT professionals can focus on the areas that really matter. Superior technology advantage: For many businesses, allocating the capital funds required to invest in new technologies is often impractical and impossible. As-a-service allows you to get to the latest-and-greatest IT through the operational cost of a recurring expense where you pay only for what you need. Bypass older legacy systems: Get to where you need to be quickly. Can you afford to move gradually to where it is your business needs to be today? You can chose a slower evolutionary path to gradually using the more modern IT to transform your business. Or, with Rogers’ solutions, you can get there rapidly. It’s always up to you and we can help you with any option you choose. Leapfrog matters because it delivers compelling business value. It's a way for businesses to be disruptive…
  5. Case Study: Mobile and Cloud Success happens through agility and speed Our CEO, Guy Laurence is laser focused on winning in the market and with a workforce of 30,000 employees, he demands agility and speed. Approximately 57% of Rogers’ employees typically work in locations that are not bound by a desk. By the time Sharespace – our new office workspace model that supports mobility – is fully deployed and completed, Rogers will have reduced its real estate requirements by 2 million sq. feet. With Sharespace, our collaboration and productivity is at an all-time high. Previously where it took an entire year to launch Rogers’ Roam Like Home service in just one country, the USA – the collaboration we achieve through Sharespace significantly accelerates the way we work, what we can achieve and allowed us to launch the same service in 99 additional countries within a single year. We’ve eliminated offices, gotten rid of desk phones, and put everything in the cloud where it’s secure and always accessible. We’ve significantly reduced the need to print, and all access is granted through a single sign on. Sharespace features today’s most disruptive technologies including: Unified Communications, Cloud, Secure Mobile Networks and the Internet of Things. Through these technologies we’ve gotten it right and are changing our business and disrupting our markets. It’s a key to Rogers’ growth and continued success.
  6. Case Study: Data Centre Rogers is in the midst of an internal IT transformation through our investments in Data Centre facilities, and by doing so we will drive more than $200M in savings over the next 5 years. This 9-month program focuses on two main business requirements: Cost Savings/Risk Mitigation, and Hybrid Cloud Enablement for more rapid services launches. We’re consolidating more than 4,500 servers previously housed in multiple 3rd party locations into our owned data centres. We’re building two additional Rogers’ data centres and these locations will support new additional demands as well allow us to further in-house consolidate currently outsourced resources with external suppliers. Our new data centre approach utilizes an operational model that’s more aligned to our business needs. It includes rationalization and migration of more than 1,000 database servers into a cloud-delivered Database as a Service (DBaaS) solution that will dramatically improve our overall business performance, reduce our CapEx and OpEx, and increase our overall enterprise security. Because our data centres are all based in Canada, sovereignty is assured, since data housed in regions outside of Canada may be subject to scrutiny by governments in those regions. This new architecture includes the deployment of an Enterprise Private Cloud that will significantly reduce the time it takes to provision new services – from weeks to hours. Also of note is that fact that our Edmonton data centre was recently accepted as a Tier III facility, and we believe we now have most Tier III DC’s in Canada.
  7. Case Study: Wi-Fi as-a-Service A mobile environment within our Rogers storefront locations is critical to engaging customers, enriching their experiences, and driving retail loyalty We know that 80% of our retail customers use mobile applications to search for offers and promotions, or to locate stores. So Wi-Fi is a “must have.” We provide free Wi-Fi connectivity in our retail locations to improve customer experiences. Our Rogers retail locations also need reliable in-store Internet for our staff to demo our products. It’s key to showing the value we have to offer and drives our ability to make a sale. The WaaS solution also features customer experience application development tools - called My Rogers - that, for example, provide the means to measure foot-traffic, and footfall throughout our retail locations.  Going forward, we can through the My Rogers app deliver personalized customer experiences through apps that recognize repeat customers and past purchases they may have made. Combined with this insight and through the WaaS solution My Rogers app we might trigger the issue of coupons or other promotional discounts to them through their mobile devices.  In the future, we will deliver mobile point-of-sale, using the Wi-Fi as-a-service solution. Previous to Wi-Fi as-a-service, we couldn’t do even simple things within our stores. Now everything just works the way it should. Our in-store staff are motivated, ready and able to do business and they are appreciative of the investment made. Just as importantly, our customers see the difference. It has helped us to create better experiences for them.
  8. Case Study: The Internet of Things In the past, monitoring of perishable pharmaceutical, food, chemical, and electronic products consisted of audited reports generated after delivery. Well, things have changed! New technology for cold-chain logistics allows not just for complete monitoring, but also for in-shipment management of refrigeration units and more. The additional benefits include increased levels of food safety, energy efficiency and reliability of delivery. Rogers recently partnered with Kitchener, Ontario-based Blue Rover to launch a food services IoT solution. Through the use of networked sensors, the safety of food in shipment is enhanced by the ability to monitor and ensure correct temperatures, humidity levels, and refrigeration equipment status are maintained, during all cycles of shipment. It's no wonder that, with increased regulations and global supply channels, cold-chain deployments have become one of the biggest IoT applications in the asset-tracking sector.
  9. Focused on Business Outcomes We’ve shared these case studies because they illustrate the business outcomes that can be achieved through disruptive technologies and solutions. As we earlier said, today’s customers no longer want to buy technology components. They want to purchase technology that delivers business outcomes. They want a company like Rogers to create predictable, simple and powerful solutions that support business applications and operations. It allows our customer to deconstruct and reconstruct their processes with today’s best technologies. And it’s all secure. We’re building a suite of security solutions that will integrate with all of our core products. Today, we’ve partnered with Trustwave to deliver compliance, vulnerability and threat management through a set of managed and professional services products. Coming soon we will bring to market a DDOS (distributed denial of services) threat management solution to defend against overwhelming DDOS attacks designed to take down your Website or IP address. Here are some of the business outcomes that Rogers is looking to deliver and support through our products and solutions. Personalized customer interactions: Interactive experiences There are more customer “touch-points” than ever today thanks to always-connected mobility. We’re “always on” and that provides more opportunities to drive loyalty, increase sales and deeper relationships with your customers. Your mobility and connectivity solutions should support enhanced services and improved customer support. Getting ahead of the competition means building better customer experiences Customer intelligence Sensors and intelligence are being imbedded everywhere and in everything. It makes it possible to collect valuable new sources of information about customer activities, movements, behavior and habits. Data lives everywhere and is a source of important intelligence. Smart community Intelligent communities are being built across Canada and around the world. It’s digitization that’s all about providing ubiquitous and seamless connectivity that connects citizens, brings intelligence and automation that improves and creates efficiencies in government services, enhances quality of life through better collaboration, and helps communities drive better economic development. Employee Productivity Mobile work Business today happens at a pace that’s faster than ever. And increasingly it’s moving outside the walls of your offices. That means being where business is, connecting with your customers, partners and employees wherever and whenever they are. Business is on the move with mobility, bringing work to workers, and ensuring they have the tools, data and other resources they need to make them productive and efficient anywhere and anytime. Mobile productivity A business world in transition means many companies are deconstructing and reconstruct business process through IT-enabled solutions that make it easier to get access to resources and tools, improve business process/operation and continue driving improved employee productivity. At the heart of it all is mobility and empowering workforces with technology and tools that deliver quick access to information for making business decisions and doing business where it happens. Mobile management Can your employees "work their way" using the devices and tools with which they are familiar and that allow them to be productive and efficient? By 2017, research shows half of all companies will force employees to use their personal devices for work (Gartner Research- BYOD Trends). The use of personal devices in a workplace setting presents major management challenges for organizations. They need to mitigate and minimize security risks and have a full view of IT resource and data activity. Operational Efficiency and Security: Connected assets Every business looks to save money by optimizing its processes. An efficient process reduces the risk and cost of failure, minimizes the need for routine maintenance visits and identifies problems before these impact a customer. With real-time data gathered through connected things you gain visibility into and control over mobile assets. Use that information to track and manage assets, speed up decision-making and improve customer satisfaction. Operational intelligence Accurate real time information about the ways your business operates reduces downtime, improves product and services delivery, and helps your field workers make quicker business decisions. Operational insights provide intelligence that helps predict buyer behavior and serve customers better. It’s all about working smarter to benefit your business and your customers Business security Advanced threat protection is crucial. Many companies lack the security tools, expertise and budget to defend themselves. Carrier grade security protection against constantly changing advanced criminal hacking techniques is now available as a service that is immediately deployable and offers rich management functions and features.
  10. As-a-Service: Simple, Secure and Predictable Rogers today is among the first to bring as-a-service in IT to market and we are making significant investments in our monitoring and management back end to ensure our solutions work for our customers the way these should. We are working with world leaders in as-a-service and will be rolling out more and more solutions in the future. Rogers believes it is the future and what Canadian customers want. It’s a big bet for us — we believe in it. As-a-service combines information technology hardware and software, communications and operational management to deliver utility-like solutions that are simple, secure and predictable in service levels and cost. It must be simple: You should be thinking about how to use information technology combined with communications for business benefit, how to use it to increase productivity and serve your customers. Not about whether LANs are running or Wi-Fi is available or whether phone systems are operating. Think about the current model where 70% to 80% of IT resource spending is focused on keeping things up and running. We want to help our customer turn that around to 10% and let businesses focus on their business. Business outcomes are what we want to help our customers focus on. Rogers wants to take care of the technology so that customers can take care of their business. It must be secure: The as-a-service approach has security and reliability overlayed throughout. Rogers certified experts deal with the complexity and headaches of ensuring that the latest technologies are delivered 24x7 through business continuity and fault tolerant systems. No more worrying about patching or upgrading because that’s done for you. It must be predictable: Rogers’ as-a-service solutions are predictable. You’ll pay a monthly recurring fee and avoid the need for difficult to allocate capital investment and complicated IT ownership. Our Wi-Fi as-a-service solution is the first example of this model. We offer access on a per-seat/per-person basis. Our current as-a-service offerings include: Wi-Fi as a service Public cloud Private cloud Cybersecurity as a service Upcoming will be our Unison Business Collaboration solution, delivered as a service
  11. We’ll Help You Discover, Design and Deploy Rogers will make it all work There’s tremendous pressure on today’s CIO to deliver much more with the same or less resources, while IT organizations are tasked to support ever increasing technology deployments AND directly contribute to the business’ bottom line. Where will they find the time? It’s always difficult to hire and keep the specialized IT expertise needed. That’s where we come in. It’s what Rogers does. We know communications and networks better than anyone. And we are the experts. We're committed to making it all work and we have the capability and expertise. Our methodology allows Rogers to quickly demonstrate successful outcomes through an iterative approach. Once a solution is delivered, we believe that remaining engaged to ensure full and successful adoption plus ongoing optimization is an integral part of our commitment.
