A WALK FROM THE PAST

I
regione. Di pianta basilicale a tre navate,
è il risultato della ristrutturazione di una
chiesa preesistente, operata dai maestri
Giovanni e Giovanni Griglio a partire dal
1290. In esso si realizza una mirabile
fusione tra elementi dello stile romanico e
gotico, interpretati dall'ingegno di artisti
locali.
splendido rosone centrale. Gravemente
danneggiato dal sisma del 1976, oggi è
completamente risorto, ma all'interno ne
conserva la memoria nell'emozionante

T
he lively historical and cultural past
of Gemona del Friuli has left its
mark in the works created by sculptors, architects and artists over the years.
Porta Udine in the first ring of city walls leads
to the old city centre and the Cathedral
(Duomo) of Santa Maria Assunta, one of
the most important medieval buildings in the
region. It has a basilica-style layout, with a
nave and two aisles and, what we see today
is the restoration of an existing church, started by master masons Giovanni and Giovanni
Griglio in 1290. It has a fine mix of the
Romanesque and Gothic styles interpreted
by skilled local craftsmen. Visitors will be
impressed by the decorations of the facade,
the Romanesque portal with its plant motifs,
and lunette celebrating the Last Judgement,
the colossal seven-metre high statue of St.
Christopher protecting travellers and the elegant Gothic Gallery of the Three Kings with
its nine statues with scenes from the epiphany and splendid central rose window. Badly
damaged in the 1976 earthquake, today it
has been completely restored, but still retains
striking evidence of the event in the angle of
the powerful pink marble columns supporting the aisles. The Cathedral contains a
number of small chapels and several precious
works of art. These include the original baptismal font made from a Roman funeral
monument, a fine gilded wooden altarpiece
featuring episodes from the Old and New
Testaments (1391), a moving Pietà or
Vesperbild from the 15th century and numerous paintings and sculptors by local and

portali, rientranze, piazzette e portici. XV-XVI, i terrazzini in stile
foreign artists from various periods.
The square outside the Cathedral is overlooked by Casa Gurisatti (15th
century) with its elegant triple lancet window, which houses the Friuli
film library. Via Bini, dominated by the Castle (still undergoing renovation), leads to the Palazzo Comunale (town hall).
Via Bini is a typical medieval road – a narrow, winding commercial road
– lined by historic buildings packed closely together with decorative
doorways, niches, squares and porticos. Visitors should look out for the
multi-coloured fresco fragments dating back to the 15th-16th centuries, the neo-gothic terraces of Casa D’Aronco, the palazzo of the noble
Elti family (15th century), which now houses the Civic Museum, and
the twin lancet windows and fourteenth-century frescos on the terracotta facade of Casa Antonelli.
The Palazzo Comunale (town hall), located in Piazza del Municipio, is
an elegant early sixteenth-century Renaissance building with a loggia
containing some rare Roman remains from the area around Gemona.
The buildings leading away from Piazza del Municipio, in the opposite
direction to Via Bini, are interesting modern designs. They include the
seat of the former Banca Popolare Antonveneta designed by architect
Luciano Gemin based on an idea of Carlo Scarpa, and the fine postmodern building with a terraced loggia by architect Alberto Antonelli
and characteristic clock. The centre of Piazza Garibaldi features a new
fountain. This complex construction has waterfall pools (designed by
architect Gianpaolo Della Marina). Not far away is the Church of Santa
Maria di Fossale with its seventeenth-century carved gilded and painted wooden altars. Further on are the monumental steps of the Church
of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie, the remains of which (late 15th
century) have been made into a park area. The city centre is overlooked
by its castle, standing high up on a hill. It is quite likely that it was originally an ancient Celtic stronghold dating back to 500 b.c., which the
Romans converted into a defensive construction, with a watchtower. At
a later date, the castle was fortified by the Longobards in the early years
of the 11th century and then completely renovated by the lords of

Andato distrutto a
Gemona, who made it their personal dwelling, before it became the
Patriarch’s residence. As far back as !381, the building had already been
unsafe, and probably suffered serious damage from the earthquake of
1511. Up until 1976, of the whole medieval complex, only the central
tower (the bell tower or clock tower with a community bell added in
1874) still remained standing along with the ruins of the southwestern tower. A third tower was restored and recovered in 1800, following which it was used as a prison until 1967. After a long period of
inactivity, restoration work on the castle has finally recommenced and
it will take several years to complete the project. However, the reconstruction work itself, and the particular methods adopted, represent a
feature of interest and attraction, together with the extraordinary view
to be admired from the splendid gardens.
Buildings of historic and artistic interest in the town have to include the
Sanctuary of S. Antonio, the world’s oldest place of worship dedicated
to St. Anthony. After its destruction by the earthquake of 1976, it was
rebuilt in a modern style to designs by architect Domenico Bortolotti
and now shelters the ruins of the thirteenth-century church built by the
saint in honour of Our Lady.
Visitors will be impressed by the work of Udine artist Arrigo Poz - the
enormous symbolic mosaic on the far wall depicts the World and
Universe traversed by a meteor symbolising the light of Christ, the
Penitential Chapel, a series of splendid windows in bright colours with
figures of Saints from the Franciscan order and the splendid side
‘mosaic’ rose window of the St. Francis’ Canticle of the Creatures. Also
worth visiting are the Saint’s Cell, the precious ex voto collection and
the “Renato Raffaelli” Museum with seventeenth-century paintings.
If we leave the historic centre behind us and head north, we come to
Ospedaletto, with the ancient Hospital of Santo Spirito, next door to
the Priorate of Santo Spirito and Little Church of Ognissanti, a gem
decorated with frescoes dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries
which came to light as a result of the damage caused by the earthquake of 1976.

he museums of Gemona del Friuli provide the most exhaustive evidence of the town’s cultural and religious awareness
and are perfectly integrated with the numerous historical
and artistic monuments and relics that have been saved and restored
following the earthquake of 1976, as documented in the photographic exhibition: the Cathedral, Palazzo Gurisatti, the Church of Santa
Maria di Fossale, Casa Antonelli and the historical buildings of Via
Bini, the Town Hall, the remains of the Chiesa delle Grazie, St.
Anthony’s Convent, the Churches of San Rocco, Ognissanti a
Ospedaletto and Sant’Agnese in Monte, and the new buildings that
grace the reconstructed town centre.

e dalle altre Chiese gemonesi.

autori dell’Italia centro-settentrionale.
legno intagliato, dorato e dipinto.

poi utilizzati, su idea e progetto dell'architetto Gemonese Alberto

when reconstruction work was started on the sacred building
after its destruction by an earthquake; when consolidation
and static restoration work was carried out on the masonry, some
underground cavities were created which were then used as a
“Lapidarium”, based on the concept and project of an architect from
Gemona, Alberto Antonelli, aided by the contribution of the local
Rotary Club, for the purpose of creating a museum for stone relics that
would have been impossible to exhibit otherwise. The lapidarium houses about thirty stone artefacts dating back to different periods of the
Middle Ages, all of which are of fine workmanship and originate from
Gemona, exhibited on iron stands or hung from the walls of the main
chamber and the entrance way. The oldest piece and the only one not
found in the Cathedral, is a sort of pine-cone that would seem to be
part of a Roman funerary monument, which stood in the garden of the
old rectory. Among the exhibits, there are fragments of stone from
angels’ wings positioned above the parastades of the Cathedral façade
before they were replaced, and part of a balustrade made by Magister
Johannes in 1293 (a small column with inscription is showcased in the
Cathedral Museum). The Lapidarium may be visited on request by

To mark the 35th anniversary of the seismic events of 1976,
which hit the Friuli region and Gemona del Friuli, an important and challenging photographic exhibition entitled
“Exhibition on the Earthquake” has been converted into a permanent
photographic exposition: “1976 – Fragments of memory”; the preexisting photographic exhibition has been radically transformed, not
with regards to its topic, but the way in which the argument is treated, moved by the intent to appeal to a wider public by making the
exhibition easier to understand, contextualize and put into perspective. Its overview has been revived and strengthened, with all the
drama of the earthquake and destruction, and the enormous feat of
the reconstruction. A sort of journey that is now able to narrate the
Gemona that used to exist, offering suggestions for the future rather
than nostalgic flashbacks, and tells of the changes that have taken
place in a town that has had “to come to terms” with destruction,
while showing what Gemona del Friuli is today, reborn after being
almost completely razed to the ground thirty-six years ago.
The exhibition extends over the two floors of the former Babele art
gallery: the ground floor is occupied by the section entitled 6 May
1976 and is dedicated to the earthquake of 15 September 1976, with
the photos that were taken immediately after the event, and which
depict Gemona as a ghost city, totally unrecognizable. What makes
this section different from the former installation is the non-stop
projection of footage selected by the Friuli film library, which were
also filmed in the days following the quake. The top floor, on the other
hand, focuses on the difficult post-quake and reconstruction phases,
and all the local and national figures who actively contributed to the

come “modello Friuli”.

sulla pianura e che è compreso tra i monti Chiampon e Cuarnan;
frequentato e celebratissimo dai Gemonesi.
Minisini è rinato a nuova vita: grazie all’intervento di recupero

opens up fan-like on the plain and is located between the mounts

fenomeni geologici. Inoltre, nelle giornate
terse, la vista è mozzafiato, potendo lo
sguardo spaziare su gran parte delle Alpi
celebrated by the people of Gemona.
Also very interesting to visit, from a naturalistic and historical point of view, are the small
lake of Minisini and Mount Cumieli, which
may also be reached on foot. Lake Minisini has
been brought to light once more: thanks to a
recovery project carried out by the Mountain
Community Gemonese, Canal del Ferro e Val
Canale vegetation has been removed to uncover this stretch of water. The lake is visited by
excursionists, families and groups of school
children. Together with the area of Rivoli
Bianchi, this zone, owing to its environmental
characteristics, has been relisted as an
“Important Site of the European Community”
(SIC) and is part of the “Natura 2000 network”.
Not-to-be-missed opportunities for all mountain enthusiasts are the excursions to Mounts
Cuarnan and Chiampon!
The route to Mount Cuarnan offers the chance to observe some interesting geological phenomena and the succession of piedmont environments that change with the climatic conditions. The Malga Cuarnan is also located here
with an annexed holiday farm where visitors
can stop off for a refreshing and regenerating
break. Standing on the mountain top, there is
an obelisk-shaped chapel that was reconstructed in 1985 and dedicated to the Saviour. The
environment is also extremely interesting for
its botanical species.

Chiampon is the highest peak of the mountain range extending in an
east-westerly direction between the Sella di Sant’Agnese and the

Starting from 9.30 in the morning, the Epifania del Tallero
will be celebrated. The beat of drums keeps time with the
elegant footsteps of dames and knights, as the historical
procession accompanies the Mayor to the impressive Cathedral of
Santa Maria Assunta, where the Mass of the Thaler will be held. With
this celebration, the entire Community, represented by its Mayor,
makes a tangible and symbolic offering to the Church: a silver thaler.
The handing over of the thaler to the Capitano del Popolo (People’s

diverse preparazioni.

Artegna, Buja, Osoppo, Majano e Montenars. Questo tradizionale

PIATTI DEL GEMONESE
DISHES OF GEMONA
formaggio, fritto in sospensione nell'olio.
Minestrone of barley and beans is a bean soup, in the peasant tradition, a perfect course rich in taste, proteins, with less fat.
Frico: It's one of the most distinctive and well-known dishes in
Friuli: it is simple, savory, and easy to cook. It can be prepared in two
different versions: the classical type, with cheese and boiled potatoes, more soft, sometimes is possible to add some onions; the crispy
type, which is made of cheese fried in oil.
Brovada with Musetto (Brovade e Musèt): This is a very old dish.
The two foods made up a well matched pair: the Musetto, a lean
meat, and the Brovada, a mix of white turnips which are sovred in
wine and cooked together in the pan.
Pies, Gubana and Focaccia: Pies can be found in almost all restaurants and are stuffed with small fruits, jam and sometimes ricotta.
Gubana is typical of valleys of Cividalese area and it is now a dessert prepared by most bakers in the region, while at Easter time
sweet focaccia is the rule.
