Key Global IT trends and their impact to New Zealand business

Notas del editor

  1. NotesPresenter:This presentation should be no more than 15 mins long. Suggested timings have been detailed in the notes section for each slide, but please rehearse before, including playing the video to check your timing
  2. Notes (2 mins)The explosion of mobile devices and applications, cloud computing, social networking, and information is creating new patters of outcomes in the use of technologyAlthough we have been talking about them for some years now and helping many of you to use these solutions in your business, it’s the intersection of these technology forces that is creating a new era of everyday living and working. And it is the first time that we are addressing their powerful combination as future business tools.Gartner call it ‘The Nexus’ and IDC have called it ‘The Third Platform’It is changing the way people consume, interact and liveIt’s also changing the way we do business, entire business flows are becoming digitisedTake for example money – payments are done via eftpos and credit transactions, it can be weeks before I personally even use or see cashThe way we view movies or listen to music has changed, downloading these on demand to watch or listen on portable tablets, phones and the emerging phenomenon of internet TVTake for example the way we purchase goods like books, Amazon is a credible example of an explosion of online shopping with its sophisticated searches, listings, and reviews. And even the way we read is now turning digital with the likes of KindlesCustomer feedback online is growing with communities of interest and social networksAs the intersections of these technologies grow in influence, completely new forms of interactions are developing for both consumers and businesses
  3. Notes (Total 10 min - talking 1 min 22 secs, play video 8 min 38 secs)What is it about these technologies you ask that is driving this change?Mobile is increasingly becoming the preferred platform to deliver IT services. Hand held devices are affordable and they allow people to work and consume goods and services or information on the go.There will be more tablets and smartphones manufactured this year than PC’s, and this balance towards mobile devices will just increase year on yearUsing mobile devices increases the demand for cloud and increases the reliance on different tools for collaboration. Data needs be tethered together in real time and cloud computing provides the perfect engine for itAnd the same goes for social networking tools – there is a growing desire to want to collaborate freely in real time, in communities of interest. Businesses that can bring the use of social networking into relevant and meaningful use to communicate with their customer base, will reap the benefitsThe same goes for those that can use the mass of amounts of digitised data from the likes of social networking and online sites to better serve their customers and make better use of their marketing spend through more targeted, relevant and useful promotions – ‘big data’ is the term industry gurus are calling this method of collection and analysisI’m now going to play a video that shows four examples of businesses or organisations that are using one of our a combination of these new technologies to transform the way we lend money, shop with our friends, transport ourselves and park in the city. Presenter:play 8 min 38 sec video by hovering over the slide and clicking with your mouse – it should bring up the video in your internet browser. For a quality view on the large presentation screen, please change the resolution setting to 720dpi and to full screen – both can be done by going to the bottom right hand area of the video on YouTube, for settings it is the second icon (shaped like a bolt), for full screen it is the last icon (shaped like a dotted square). Here is the link to the video should you not be able to use the slide click: http://youtu.be/TSJa5hcz3Bg
  4. NotesI’m now going to play three short videos that show examples of businesses or organisations that are using a combination of these new technologiesExample 1 – Friendshopper. Friendshopper allows users from around the world to shop together online in real timeExample 2 – Zipcar.Zipcar is a US rental care service that uses car sharing as an alternative to owning your own – they use online, mobile and cloud delivered booking serviceExample 3 – SF Park. SF Park is a service that utilises a mobile application to optimise San Francisco parking spaces. It helps drivers find parking spaces by providing real time parking availability on Googlemaps, with pricing and payment services. It also allows the city to manage congestion by offering cheaper rate parking spaces in less congested areas during peak timesPresenter: Hoverover the images on the slide and click with your mouse to play the videos – it should bring up the video in your internet browser. For a quality view on the large presentation screen, please change the resolution setting to 720dpi and to full screen – both can be done by going to the bottom right hand area of the video on YouTube, for settings it is the second icon (shaped like a bolt), for full screen it is the last icon (shaped like a dotted square). 5. Notes (1 min 30 secs)So with the intersection of mobile, cloud, social and data, there is a number of opportunities seize to innovate, differentiate and gain business agilityDigitise your customer facing activities – use social and mobile interactions to engage with your consumers, partners and suppliers. Like Zip Car whose entire booking service is cloud delivered via mobile or onlineAs Friendshopper has done, centre marketing on social interactions, deliver information via the cloud in real time, and make it available through mobile devices and applications – combine traditionally commercial activities with social activitiesAnd as I mentioned earlier, using contextual data for the likes of customer location and the communities they participate in can let businesses finely target their marketing spend such as advertising and discounts to increase sales – you just saw how SF Park utilises a mobile application, text messaging, the internet and pavement sensors to provide real time parking availability on Googlemaps for the city drivers of San FranciscoCreate a compelling experience that seamlessly integrates across the entire customer lifecycle, from driving awareness, selling and customer service. Social and mobile come together as communities of customers provide each other support, rather than simply relying on the suppliers service departmentRemote workforces are being created as mobile meets social – for example repair and maintenance people share pictures and videos of things they are trying to fix, and ask each other advice. Up to date information can be accessed anywhere, anytime. Delivered from the cloud over mobile technologies to improve responsiveness and reduce the cost of service
  6. Notes (1 mins 30 secs)NZ businesses should jump onboard and embrace these changing technologies – it’s sensible to start moving nowYour customers will love you for it, and so will your future business survivalAs an IT person you may be asking how does it affect me, what can I be doing differently? We know many large businesses don’t have the architecture to support such changeYou too many have inflexible platforms and lack the ability to innovateMany NZ businesses, and public sector organisations don’t allow social applications during business time, others have not been able to embrace cloud due to its public nature and the mention of bring your own device can send some IT teams running for the hillsBut we are working with a number of our clients on strategies to solve such problems and create them the kind of modern and secure workplace they require to embrace the future of business and ITThe fact of the matter is a new era of technological change is upon us, its driven by user demand and for those businesses that do cater to their customers, the world is their market – geographic boundaries are reducing and there are opportunities to increase business both nationally and internationallyThe rest of our programme today will help you find out how to start embracing the convergence of mobile apps and devices, cloud computing, social technologies and information – this is the future of businessPresenter: The busy programme means it is unlikely to be any free time for questions now , but as the last bullet points out, we will be around on the Gen-i stand to answer question.
