This document provides information about the target audience for a project called SMILE, which aims to help 15-20 year olds with mental illness. A survey of the target audience found that 50% feel stressed often or always. Most respondents were 18+ years old, and over 60% had heard of the mental health charity Mind. The document also discusses common coping techniques like retail therapy and toxic positivity. It provides details on Mind's mission to support those with mental health problems through groups, phone/online support. Finally, it outlines ideas for a video that could feature different activities and improvements in body language to represent coping with mental illness.
3. TARGET AUDIENCE
As seen in the brief, the target audience for this project is 15–20-year-
olds. To gain a better understanding of my target audience I created a
survey based around the project. I created a google forms survey and
send it to my peers to complete as they are in the target audiences age
category. In this age category 75% of people have started to develop a
mental illness by the age of 15 but will progress up to the age of 19.
20XX Pitch Deck 3
In this question I asked how often do you get stressed, as you
can see from my results 50% said the get stressed . From these
results I can also see that none of my target audience rarely or
never feel stressed. often, 16.7% said they get stressed
sometimes and 33.3% said they get stressed almost always. This
has given me a range of responses on how often people get
For this question I asked for the target audiences age to gain a better
understanding on who my target audience is. From this chart we can see
that a larger percentage of my target audience is 18+ with the percentage
being 38.5%, but for the ages of 16 and 17 there is an even split with a
percentage of 30.8% . This will allow me to make my project more targeted
to their specific age group.
For this question I asked if my target audience had heard of mind
61.5% have heard of the charity mind
23.1% had not heard of mind
15.4% said they may have heard of the charity mind
This allows me to gain a better understanding on who has heard of the
mental health charity or who may need to gain a better understanding on
what they do.

With podcasts becoming more popular now there are many different
genres of podcasts. The genres can be from comedy, historical, mental
health etc. Many influencers and celebrities have started talking about
their mental health in their podcasts to show that living a luxury life isn’t
how its shown and to give people and insight on their mental health
issues.
Different companies target their advertisements to a certain topic
or their brand, For example Amazons Christmas advertisement was
about how people may feel anxious coming out of lockdown and
how people can help each other when they are struggling.
However, they also were advertising their brand alongside the
storyline.
Like TV advertisements, print advertisements are targeted at
certain audiences and a specific company. Mental health
advertisements will keep to the general idea of having contact
information to their website or a phone number if people need to
talk.

5. COPING TECHNIQUES
Retail therapy
One of the ways people cope is retail therapy, many people believe
that when they go shopping to treat themselves it will make them
feel better than before, this may work but only for a small amount of
time. Retail therapy is the primary purpose to improve a buyer's
mood but is normally a short-lived habit. A study that was completed
in 2014 from the journal of consumer psychology found that taking
part in retail therapy does help fight a lingering sadness.
Toxic Positivity
Toxic positivity involves dismissing the negative emotions and responding to
the distress with false self reassurance rather than feeling empathetic.
Signs of toxic positivity can be dismissing others difficult feelings, hiding
your painful emotions, ignoring your problems or experiencing guilt for being
angry or sad. When experiencing toxic positivity it causes the person to feel
guilty as they feel as though they aren’t finding a way to be positive even
when faced with a tragedy.
