Nova Southeastern University underwent a complete virtualization infrastructure makeover from 2011-2015 to improve their desktop management. They initially tried VDI and PVS implementations but faced issues with drivers, network traffic, and licensing costs. In 2015, they switched to a shared hosted desktop model using XenApp and Dell Wyse clients, which was very successful. This solution provided mobility, security, and time savings through centralized administration while reducing costs through device licensing and replacement. It allowed flexible use of devices and deployment of over 130 workstations in the dental simulation lab.
2. Overview
In traditional environments, desktops would be deployed, patched, upgraded, and
managed individually. Maintaining and managing those individual desktops can take
a lot of time and effort with possibly hundreds of hours dedicated to this tasks alone.
This session will highlight key innovations by Dell and Citrix that allowed Nova
Southeastern University to do a complete virtualization infrastructure makeover that
spans from the datacenter to the desktop, allowing us to delivering the needed
resources to students.
3. The Perfect Solution
Get rid of all computer labs and change to a BYOD architecture. Cycle out new
hardware and scrap the rest.
Not so easy
4. Our Virtual Journey
2011 - Started with a VDI implementation. Replaced all regular desktops with thin
clients and pool VDI. It didn’t work.
2012 - Changed to a PVS implementation to physical clients and It sort of worked.
– Over 12 Golden Images. Drivers dependencies.
– Heavy network traffic and boot storms (GBs per client just to boot up).
– Not very flexible. MAC address maintenance
– Every device had to be licensed.
– Distributed architecture (Server couldn’t be far from the end clients)
5. On Demand Desktop and Apps
• In 2015 we changed to a shared hosted desktop model, using XenApp 7.6 and
Dell Wyse Clients with WTNOS.
• The reception was overwhelming, we actually couldn’t convert labs fast enough.
• At the same time renovation of the Dental Simulation lab was taking place and so
we decided to go with the same solution.
6. 4 Key benefits
• Frontend (what the users see)
• Backend (Infrastructure)
• Support (Deployments, Support and Replacement)
• Savings
7. Frontend: NSU Desktop
On demand desktop:
Wyse client is auto logged for the
user and their desktop is just one
click away
8. Frontend: Apps for Health Professions
For added security users need to authenticate before seeing their apps
11. Savings
Allowed us to change from U/D licensing model to CCU
Only about 1/3 of all devices are in use at any given time
Clients are cheap and easy to replace.
12. Virtualization benefits for educational institutions
Mobility & BYOD
• Delivers desktop
and apps on almost
any device
• Easier for users

Right-size your Virtualization
Secure
• Data and apps stay
under your control
• Helps ensure
compliance and
privacy
On premises
• No public cloud
provider needed to
enable desktops
Saves time
• “Patch Tuesdays”
• Central admin of

• Easy & fast desktop
deployment
13. The Solution: Benefits
• Added a Zero Client to replace a VGA monitor
• Fits into the small footprint
• Single room with 130 stations
• Easy to Deploy
• Cost Effective
Located on the College of Dental
Medicine’s second floor, the newly
renovated Simulation Lab features
130 ergonomically correct work
stations.
Each station is equipped with an
AIO Dell Wyse Zero client computer
that incorporates our existing Video
Distribution System.
The Lab immediately was in
constant use.
14. The Results
“Presently, this is the only such
Simulation Lab in the United States. It
has already proved to be an excellent
recruiting tool to attract top quality
students and faculty members to the
College.”
- Dean Niessen, Nova Southeastern

Only virus-immune clients: Dell Wyse thin clients with Wyse ThinOS firmware have zero attack surface, making them immune from viruses and malware. With no published API, no user-accessible file system, no browser, and not based on any published Linux base, the software is literally immune from virus attacks.
8 year refresh cycle: Wyse thin clients from Dell average about 8 years of productive use before they need to be swapped out. We have some customers who have been using the same Wyse thin clients for 12 years. This remarkable reliability saves customers time and money since they can completely bypass a typical 4-year desktop refresh cycle.
