2. Overview
Technology is ever changing and becoming a huge part of our world.
Through communication, collaboration, and social connections, everyone
is wanting to be connected and know how to use technology. Technology
continues to be a concern for educators and parents. “The keys to raising
student achievement are to provide student with a solid foundation of
basic skills and to motivate them to learn.Technology can help accomplish
this goal.” (apple.com)

■ The Impact ofTechnology on Student Achievement- A Summary of
Research Findings onTechnology’s Impact in the Classroom has
combined their findings into four major areas of importance.
– 1. Mastering Fundamental Skills
– 2. Becoming ProficientUsers ofTechnology
– 3. Preparing Students with 21st Century Skills
– 4. Motivating Students to Higher Level of Achievement
All of these areas promote and support technology in the classroom and
this article give examples of how technology can improve and support
learning in all of the four given areas.

■ The Journal- StudyTies Student Achievement toTechnology Integration is an
article that shares the findings from 2009 on how technology is having a
positive impact on learning outcomes. This report comes fromThe State
EducationalTechnology Directors Association (SETDA).
The actual report is Focus onTechnology Integration in America’s Schools. It looks
at all 50 states where technology is being used effectively in the areas of
curriculum, content, curricula, professional development and assessments. “In
high need schools, there’s been a 31 percent increase in the “innovative use of
technology by teachers in core subject areas” (Nagal, 2009)
In addition to academic findings, the study also found that:
*Visual learning options have increased
*Professional Development helps educators with technology integration
*There is an increase in state-coordinated research
*Student technology literacy is on the rise

■ Stanford Graduate School of Education has a report out called
Technology can close achievement gaps, improve learning. The
information is fromAlliance for Excellent Education and Stanford
Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE).
– This report concludes that when technology is used properly in the
classroom, student gains can be significant in achievement and boost
engagement.
– “Strong gains in achievement occur by pairing technology with
classroom teachers who provide real-time support and
encouragement to underserved students.” (Technology can close
achievement gaps)
6. Summary
■ Technology is all around us and is used in classrooms all across the country. Our
students need technology to gain real world knowledge and experience.
■ Studies have shown that students who use technology feel empowered and tend to be
self learners along with being more connected with the outside world.
■ When technology is used properly it is proven to raise math, reading and writing
scores.
■ Using technology to replace teachers in not a good idea.Teachers are needed to work
along with the students and help ensure that proper programs and technology
systems are being used and in the correct way.
7. Anaylsis
■ I have found that all three of these credible sources support technology
in the classroom.
■ Benefits of technology in the classroom range from test scores,
attitude, classroom attendance and self motivation.
■ Poverty districts show improvement in test scores when using
technology just as wealthy districts.
■ Technology can begin in the classrooms at a very early age as long as it
is used appropriately and not overused.
8. Connections
■ I believe that the use of technology followsVygotsky thoughts of cultural tools and
cognitive development. We use technology because it is what our culture and world
uses. By use of technology, many skills can develop such as speech and language,
writing and expressive thought and even problem solving.
■ Technology can be a benefit to behavioral issues. If used correctly in the classroom as
a learning tool and possibly an incentive for additional time use, can help meet
behavioral goals for students. Children enjoy technology so they may work extra hard
to make sure they get time to use it!
■ Technology makes students all feel a part of something bigger. Collaborations where
students work together, bringing all students together for a purpose or project.
Possibly the students works at his/her own pace and feels a sense of success and
empowerment. That is student success and building a love for learning.
■ Technology allows students to work alone to solve problems but yet assisted learning
may occur as well as guided participation.
■ I also believe that computers help student who are in the Concrete Operational stage
of learning. It helps them relate to the real world around them and connect to the
outside world.
9. Conclusions
■ The following slides have covered three credible sources of information on technology
use in the classroom and how technology can help promote student achievement.Test
scores are on the rise when technology is used in the classrooms. Students are
empowered and feel a sense of satisfaction and pride when able to use technology.
■ Technology is proven to promote social interactions as well as collaboration with
teachers and students.
■ Students are becoming more aware of the world around them from technology. From
use of visual aids, keyboarding, audio, graphic designs and the web. There is so much a
student can achieve.
■ Technology is part of our culture and society so it is a
part of the child’s needs as well.
10. Communication
with
Families
Be sure to limit screen time but
make it available and appropriate
when you can.
Encourage children to talk about
what they are using technology for.
Allow the children to ask questions if
they need to, but you may find you
are asking them the questions!
As a teacher, share all the positive
ways that technology helps student
achievement!
