20. Transmission Platform
• GSM Communication Platform which provides 2-Way
Communication is essentially required for 2-Way Communication for
services like Control Office to Train Emergency PA System,
Wireless Coach Display System etc.
• Standalone Coach Display System with will have following
deficiencies.
– Huge All India Level Manpower requirement for programming Train No. in each and every
coach -every time train starts it journey.
– Huge All India Level Manpower requirement for loading Route Map when a coach is diverted
from One Train to Other Train for which it does not have Route Map.
– Even loading of All India Route (in all coaches as one time exercise) will not be workable.
Change in WTT (owing to Doubling, Gauge Conversion, New Lines, Electrification, Signaling
System Up-gradation etc) is an continuous exercise. Even a change in WTT of One Section
in a Division will require Route Map uploading in All Coaches of Indian Railway which are
likely to pass through that Section.
– Huge All India Manpower requirement to upload New Time Table at 0.00 Hours on 01.07 of
every year to upload in All Coaches of Indian Railway.
– It will not be cost effective to have GPS Receiver in each and every Coach.
– It will not be possible to send emergency messages directly from Control Office to Display
Boards.
– It will not be possible to integrate Display Board with PA System for Co-ordinated
Messages.

21. Transmission Platform
• Onboard Diagnostic System, Derailment Detection System, Crew
Management System (Smart Card Reader) will require additional
bandwidth which can be provided by GSM/GPRS only etc.
• Satellite Communication which operates in S Band, will have
problem during Rainy Weather.
• Satellite Communication will have problem in Covered Station,
Tunnels etc.
• Presently MSS Platform of INSAT Satellite with 1 MHz can
accommodate only Approximately 1500 Locomotive with One-Way
Reporting of location every minute.
• Though Dual GSM SIM will reduce shadow zones yet it is proposed
that in long run IR should have its own Satellite Transponder.
• SIMRAN which have required interface for MSS Terminal, will use
this available bandwidth wisely in minor GSM Shadow Zones.
• SIMRAN Station Server integrated with Railway OFC Network will
also provide backup to GSM/Satellite Service in Shadow Zones.
