2. Our Transport Vision – Planning for Growth
The West of England is a
prosperous and fast growing
area
We make a net contribution to
HM Treasury
The Councils are committed to
supporting growth in jobs and
housing
Major investment in our
transport network is needed to
support this growth
We also need to tackle our
current problems on the
network
3. Our Transport Vision – Planning for Growth
We have high car dependency
– congestion, air quality,
accessibility and resilience
Importance and wider
economic benefits of our
strategic road and rail network
We have made significant
recent progress – cycling, bus
and rail travel
4. • Continued promotion of `smarter choices’
• Ambition for core Light Rapid Transit
network, plus MetroBus extensions and
strategic cycling corridors
• Key enabling highway schemes and
upgrades
• Core role of Bristol Airport
• Local rail improvements – increased
frequencies and new stations
• New motorway junctions, dynamic
motorway management and A36/A46 link
• Bristol and Weston-super-Mare area
packages
• Strong overlap with JSP emerging spatial
locations, and transport packages to
address impact of development sites
Transport Vision – Corridor Key Features
5. Local Bus and P&R:
• Most public transport users will
be bus passengers
• MetroBus forms basis for quality
standard
• Emphasis on ring of Park and
Ride sites – linked to urban
living in JSP
• Remodel local bus network to
improve links to Enterprise
areas and Temple Meads, also
linked to urban living.
• Integration and interchange
• Opportunities from enhanced
quality partnerships or
franchising
Clarification on `outcomes’ of the packages (such as mode split for commuting) will follow the completion of model testing.
The ‘vision’ is intended to be transformational and ambitious – it will require a significant step up from our current level’s of spend.
