Mine your 404 pages in Google Webmaster Tools to see who links to them. Use a 301 redirect to your most related current page to reclaim your lost links.
Look for mentions of your brand, high level employees, or unique services you may offer. Sometimes you’ve been mentioned, where all you need to do is ask for a link.
If you create unique images or infographic, and they ran wild on the internet, reach out to the sites that are hosting them and as for a link credit. Google’s reverse image search works great for this.
If your brand name is difficult to spell or your executives have tough last names, they may have been linked to incorrectly. Use this trick to recover any links that are pointing to an inaccurate URL. Small opportunity in most cases, but worth the effort of checking.
Sometimes the best links are right within reach. Example – are you a member of a standards group? Do your customers have a preferred vendors page? Did you sponsor or donate and not receive a link? Doesn’t hurt to ask.
Some beginner tips to starting the guest posting process. Remember, share high quality articles. Don’t be lazy.
Consider reversing the blog post strategy. Accept (and maybe solicit) guest blog posts from authoritative bloggers. They may promote you and proudly link back to their work on your domain. Topsy is a good tool to find these authorities, but you can also find them with general prospecting (especially using Buzzstream).
Broken link building is especially valuable if you’re an expert in something. Often, the smaller the business, the smaller the niche. That can be a prospecting advantage.
An alternative to broken link building, sometimes it’s not about fixing someone’s broken link, but showing them where their information is outdated. If you’re an expert in a field, and know there’s misinformation out there, use this tool to track it down and begin your conversation with the webmaster. Give them a post (with a link in it), or ask them to link to something updated on your site.
