3. About Shot Put
A standard contest of the Olympic Games
since 1896, the shot put traces its history back
centuries earlier. From writings in the 12th
century, scholars believe it originated in the
Scottish highlands as a descendant of “putting
the stone.” In this activity, Celtic chieftains
required men to toss heavy stones in order to
determine the strongest people in the clan.
4. Conclusion
During the Middle Ages, the contest evolved as
stones were replaced with metal balls. Soldiers
would throw cannon balls to prove their strength in
a method similar to modern athletes. Moreover,
the term “shot” means cannon ball while “put”
refers to the throwing style. Despite its existence
for hundreds of years, it took until the late 19th
century for it to become an official sport with rules
and standards. Today, shot put balls are made of
lead, and athletes have adopted a variety of
hurling methods, but the overall method of
competition has remained the same.
