2. INTRODUCTION STOCKHOLM EXERGI
▪ Stockholm Exergi (SE) produces district heating, district
cooling and electricity. Approx 700 employees
▪ The company has 10,000+ district heating and cooling
customers in Stockholm which provides heat to over
800,000 citizens
▪ SE’s network comprises 2,800 km of district heating
pipelines and 250 km of district cooling pipelines. The
cooling network are the second largest in the world
▪ Stockholm Exergi is equally owned by Fortum and the
City of Stockholm
▪ Supply of district heating in the greater metropolitan area
is approx. 9 TWh p.a. corresponding to 70% of total
demand
▪ District heating in Stockholm will be entirely produced
from renewable or recovered energy no later than 2030

4. WHAT IS OPEN DISTRICT HEATING?
▪ Open District Heating enables customer to gain revenue
on its excess heat that otherwise would drive cost to get
rid of
▪ ODH was launched to market 2014 and have 23
customers today, 2017 was the partnership Stockholm
Data Park launched and its focus is to establish data
centres in the Stockholm area
▪ During 2018 a total amount of 113 GWh heat was
recovered, corresponding heating of 31 000 apartments
p.a.
▪ Ongoing installation can add almost another
100 GWh of heat p.a., this corresponds to approx. 3 % of
Stockholms total need of district heating
▪ During 2017 two solutions was implemented within Grow
Smarter, supermarket Hemköp in Farsta and data centre
GleSYS in Västberga

7. TODAY’S PARTNERSHIP WITH SUB-CONTRACTORS
WORKS GOOD AND NO MAJOR CHANGES IS REQUIRED
▪ The implementation of the ODH solution requires a
number of third part sub-contractor to make the installation
successful
▪ After installation the operating and measuring phase is
also depending on Stockholm Exergi, the supplier of the
measuring equipment and the ODH supplier
▪ The today’s setup with sub-contractors works smoothly
and no further changes is required

9. TECHNICAL EVALUATION IS MAINLY BASED ON
ELECTRICITY USED AND DELIVERED HEAT
KPIs used when evaluation the implementation:
▪ Cooling demand (ODH supplier data)
▪ Electricity demand before and after implementation
(ODH supplier data)
▪ Delivered heat and temperature (Stockholm Exergi data)
▪ Performance and COP data before and after
implementation (ODH supplier data)

11. WITH OPEN DISTRICT HEATING THE ODH SUPPLIER
GAIN REVENUES ON ITS EXCESS HEAT
Stockholm Exergi purchase heat from customers with excess heat in its
business
The excess heat is exported into the district heating network and used to heat
up the City of Stockholm
Customers gain improved OPEX due to added income and environmental
profile due to created value with the heat that otherwise would drive cost to get
rid of
Stockholm Exergi enables to replace more costly and less environmental
friendly production e.g. coal with waste heat
For a large-scale implementation of heat recovery into the district heating
network Stockholm Exergi gains other values such as avoided peak
production, capacity investments and reduced operation and
maintenance costs thanks to third party ownership of the production asset
The business model has proven to be economical viable
