Hello and welcomeladies and gentlemen! This is Gurbet Gunturk, I am your library instructor. Today we will go through the one of the most known database LexisNexis Academic, which provides superior legal-research sources to help students and faculty members at colleges and universities. Before we start I want to ask you to tell me how many of you guys knew about this database?! (depends on raising hands)
As we can see many of us heard about this database already. As I said, today we will go over LexisNexis Academic Database. Together we will cover the basic and advance search processes, work together with search results. Meanwhile, I want to encourage you to follow the search process by login in to the database as well. This way you can increase your understanding of the search process. To do this, go to the library home page click on databases tab, and under the databases section choose NexisLexis Academic. Since you are in the campus, you are not required to login with your student ID and Password. However, keep in your mind that you should enter these information whenever you try to login out of the campus. After the search results, we will go over the useful search tools and other special features of the database. I am planning to finish up the session by answering your questions if there are any. Please let me know if you need any assistance before I start the session.
So let`s see what LexisNexis Academic provides;-- Full text of more than 350 newspapers from the U.S. and around the world, many same day of publication, including extensive archives for many titles-- More than 300 magazines and journals and over 600 newsletters
--Wire services, updated several times a day, including respected names such as the Associated Press, Business Wire and PR Newswire--Non-English language news sources available in different languages [Spanish, French, German, Italian and Dutch] including both newspapers and magazines--Also provides a full range of credible sources for business information, including business and financial news, U.S. and international company financial information from government or private sources, market research, industry reports.
After the quick overview lets begin with the home page of LexisNexis Academic. Here is the default search screen that appears when you go to the home page. The home page/ default search is set for Basic Search form. The home page is divided into separate parts. They are: the left navigation area, easy search area –for News, Legal Cases, Company Info, Hot Topic Links, Research People, Combined Search-, and General Search area. Each of these boxes will allow you to conduct a quick search for by just filling out the fields in the relevant box.The upper tool bar runs across the top of the page, clicking Home and the LexisNexis Academic will return to the home page. The Clear button allows to clear all the search attempts. The Help button links to construct searches within LexisNexis Academic; user guides, academic support, site tools, troubleshooting tips, and more. The Left navigation area links to research categories within LexisNexis Academic and are divided into nine categories. They are News, US Legal, International Legal, Companies, Country Information, Subject Areas, Sources, Guides & Reseource, and Mobile. These categories are listed based on users` information needs. Clicking on these sections will expend the subcategories.
Let`s say we want to conduct a basic search in News section. To access the General Search page, click on the All News link. After that you will be able to see this screen in the database. Now you can enter separate search phrases or words into each text field and then click on the Search button, or you can use any of the limiters to streamline your search: Use the pull down menu to the left of each search field to make your search as specific as possible. Lets say we enter coffee AND fair trade as a keyword (you may also use a single word, it is depends on your query). If you have a specific publication (e.g. The New York Times, Washington Post) that you would like an article from, type in the name of that publication here. You may also limit your search to a specific Author, Subject Term, Source Title (journal), etc. by using the pull down menus to the right of each search text field.
As we can see on the search result screenshot, you may sort your results by Relevance or Newest to Oldest. Also you may limit your results using the left hand tool bar. Show pull-down menu will help youto change how you want to view item information in the Results window. The two most popular options are List (default) and Expanded List. Choose Expanded List if you want to see a preview of where your search word/terms appear in the document.
Now we can see the record result. Since we browsed within newspaper, this record belongs to a newspaper clip. You can click on therelevant icon on the right hand side to Print, Email, Save, Export BibliographicReferences, or Copy DocumentLink.
And here is the screen for Advance search option. The Advanced Search form includes special tools such as the Index Terms Company, Industry, Subject, Geography, People lookup, and supports refined query language techniques for Boolean Searching. The Advanced Search form allows users selecting sources by name and type. There is also an option for the date selection followed by the Search Term area. At that point I won`t show the search results page because it is same as basic search result page.
The Browse Sources option allow you to narrow your search results. The Sources Tab allows search for specific sources and/or a particular topic. On the Browse Sources tab, in “By” section, the search can be done by publication type, news and business topics, industry, or area of law. Depending on the button, the yellow folders at “Publication Types” will change. The same can be done in the "Filter By Topics" drop-down menu. Click there to see a list of News and Business Topics, Industries, and Areas of Law. This list and the folders from “By” contain the same topics. On the Find Sources tab, users can set search multiple topics at once. Youcan also find sources by Region of Coverage, Publication Language, and Frequency of Update in this area.
Let see an example search for a legal case. This widget allows to find a legal case by citation number or party name. For instance, for a Landmark Supreme Court case, such as Georgia v. Brailsford, the link can be used to navigate the Landmark Cases search form. For legal citations, it is important to for the citation in a correct format. If the search is for a party name, it does not matter which side of the v. entered. The name on. Brailsford v. Georgia will bring the same results as Georgia v. Brailsford. The widget also allows searching a single name, for example “Cessy”. To search for a specific topic such as Human Rights, entering a phrase in the Topic search box will be enough. Terms connect with AND and OR for Boolean Searching. To search cases by legal topic, attorney, judge, etc, use the links provided on the widget to navigate to other legal search forms. These forms will allow for an advanced search as well.
Within the search results the mark feature allows you to select records. By marking items, you can print, save or e-mail multiple records at one time. To mark a record click in the check box to the left of a title in either the Document List or the Expanded List. You may also choose the way in which results are displayed. Select the desired option from the “Show” drop-down list.
Here againLexisNexis Academic allows to get hard copy of the document. You can use your browser’s print feature to print the document. The database allows to output one document at a time using the FULL or KWIC™ formats. Citations search results can also be printed. To use this feature, click the Print button and follow the directions, you can print the complete document or just citations as well.
Boolean search logic allows to create compound queries that have high recall and high precision. LexisNexis Academic provides wide search options with Boolean Operators. AND connect words that in different segments, searches with using AND generally bring more documents than searches using the W/n connector. OR command helps to find either or both search words or phrases in the same document. It allows to connect synonyms, antonyms, acronyms and abbreviations. NOT Connector allows to find documents in a search word or phrase is to be excluded. For example, the following search finds documents where the word "Bush" appears but the word "Obama" does not. Bush NOT Obama. ALLCAPS Command allows to restrict the Boolean search to find words in which all letters are capitalized. For instance, allcaps (ala) finds documents referencing the American Library Association (ALA).
Wildcards function as placeholders/replacement for letters in words or phrases that searching. There are two universal characters: the asterisk and the exclamation mark. These have different functions. Asterisk * replaces one character, can appear more than once in a word, and can be used anywhere but not as the first letter. For instance, the term, m*n, the search results will include both the terms man and men. Exclamation mark ! replaces one or more characters at the end of a word. For instance, use law! to search for lawyer.
With Cloud Storage option you can also deliver files directly to their Dropbox or Google Drive accounts.
