The Mercat de l’Olivar, constructed in 1951 and
located in the centre of Palma de Mallorca, is one of
the city’s main food markets, selling fresh produce
and typical products of the island of Mallorca, in
particular all kinds of fish and shellfish, fruit and
vegetables, meat, cheeses and sausages and even
flowers. The first floor has a supermarket,
hairdressing salon and a number of shops.

From Monday to Thursday from 7:00 to 14:30.
Friday from 7:00 to 20:00.
Saturdays from 07:00 to 15:00.
Sundays closed.

GENERAL INFORMATION MORE INFORMATION OF INTEREST
The Catholic parish church of Sant Miquel is located
between Plaça d’Espanya and Plaça Major. It is one
of the oldest churches in the city and is considered
to be the oldest temple in Palma. It is believed that
on this spot during the Islamic period there stood
the Main Mosque of the old city of Medina
Mayurqa.
After the reconstruction of the old building in the
17th century, the Baroque style predominates over
its original medieval style, but some parts of its
initial 14th-century Gothic style are conserved, such
as the main façade and the bell tower.
Easter services are held here, and masses every day of
the week.
It can be visited freely outside of mass times.

The Contemporary Art Museum of the Joan March
Foundation is located in an illustrious old mansion from
the 17th century, reformed by the architect Guillem
Reynés i Font. It contains works by the greatest Spanish
artists of the 20th century and the present day, such as
Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Juan Gris or Salvador Dalí.

BASIC INFORMATION DATA OF INTEREST
The Palma City Hall, located in the heart of the old
town, was built by the architects Pere Bauçà, Miquel
Oliver and Bartomeu Calafat during the 17th century.
The building is notable for its main façade with
elements of Baroque and mannerist styles, and also
the balcony, the clock d’en Figuera and the “If only...”
bench.
In the Plaça de Cort itself, just opposite the City Hall
there stands the Olive Tree of Cort, around 500-600
years of age and a symbol of peace. It was
transplanted from the Serra de Tramuntana to the
Plaça de Cort in the year 1999.

The Palau March contains the art and book collection
of the Bartolomé March Foundation. The courtyards
of the Palace exhibit collections of contemporary
sculpture by artists like Rodin, Moore and Chillida.

BASIC INFORMATION DATA OF INTEREST
The Palau Reial de l’Almudaina, constructed for King
Jaume II in the early 14th century, was the seat of the
court of the Kings of Mallorca during the reign of
Jaume II himself, Sancho I and Jaume III, and also
during the time of the Kingdom of Aragon.
It is now one of the residences of the Spanish royal
family. Its most notable spaces are the Palau del Rey,
the Palau de la Reina, the Capilla Reial de Santa Ana
and the Gran Salón Tinell.

The Cathedral of Mallorca (La Seu) is the city’s main
religious building. Constructed between 1229 and
1346 over the former mosque of Medina Mayurqa, of
which a tower is conserved. It is the only Gothic
cathedral standing beside the sea, and it has the
largest original Gothic rose window in Europe.
Inside, visitors can admire works by the architect
Antoni Gaudí, carried out during the reform of the
Cathedral which lasted approximately 10 years, and
the chapel decorated by the Mallorcan painter-
ceramist Miquel Barceló.

The Episcopal Palace is located behind the apse of the
Cathedral. It is the principal seat of the Bishops of Mallorca,
the first being Ramon de Torrella (1238 – 1266).
Its style, mainly Baroque, has been modified over many years
since the 13th century. The oldest part of the Palace is the
home of the Gothic-style Diocesan Museum, one of the
oldest in the island, an initiative of Bishop Pere Joan Campins
inaugurated in 1916.

The building of Can Bordils, located at one of the
crossroads of the old town and now the property of
the Palma City Council, is now the home of the city’s
Municipal Archive, containing documentation on the
city and the island of Mallorca since the year 1718.
Before the building passed into the ownership of
several families, and finally to the City Council in
1982, during the 13th century it was rebuilt over
remains of the Islamic period. Notable features of its
structure are the façade with its round-arch portal
and the square-plan courtyard reformed by the
architect Guillem Forteza.

The courtyard of the house of Can Oms is one of
Palma’s oldest monuments and forms part of the
famous route of the Patis de Palma (Courtyards of
Palma).
In 1642 the house was occupied by the noble
Doms family, symbolised by the coat of arms
located on the balcony of the staircase.
The courtyard, from the early 18th century, was
rehabilitated in 1982 by the Palma City Council,
the present proprietor of the house.

The Gothic church of Santa Eulàlia has great
significance in the history of the Kingdom of
Mallorca. Here, in the year 1276, the new King of
Mallorca Jaume II was crowned by the hand of his
father Jaume I, the previous monarch.
Prominent features of this Gothic church are the
enormous Neo-Gothic bell tower with spire, the
terraces and gargoyles, the Holy Christ of the
Conquest and the original main apse. The
surrounding streets conceal the old cemetery of the
parish of Santa Eulàlia.

is adjoined by its cloister.

It is one of the oldest churches in the city and is considered to be the oldest temple in Palma. It is believed that on this spot during the Islamic period there stood the Main Mosque of the old city of Medina Mayurqa. After the reconstruction of the old building in the 17th century, the Baroque style predominates over its original medieval style, but some parts of its initial 14th-century Gothic style are conserved, such as the main façade and the bell tower. Easter services are held here, and masses every day of the week. It can be visited freely outside of mass times. In the Plaça de Cort itself, just opposite the City Hall there stands the Olive Tree of Cort, around 500-600 years of age and a symbol of peace.
