2. Context
The world Environment Day is an internationally recognized day, whose
inception is 1973, where governments, businesses, organizations and
individuals from over 150 countries come together to drive positive
change by raising concerns on prevailing environment condition and
also celebrate efforts and gains made by these stakeholders.
This takes place every Year 5th of June

• 1973 – “Only One Earth”
• 1977 – Ozone layer Depletion
• 1979 – “Only one future for our children”
• 1981 – Toxic chemicals in ground water and food chains
• 1986 – “A Tree for Peace”
• 1987 – Celebration at Nairobi with the setting up of the UNEP Headquarters
• 1988 - “When People Put the Environment First, Development Will Last”
• 1989 – A concern of global warming arises
• 1992 – The earth Summit, Rio De Janeiro,Brazil: Key feature are the treaties on
climate change, desertification and biodiversity, and set the course for
contemporary sustainable development.

• 1993 - “Poverty and the Environment - Breaking the Vicious Circle.” in Beijing China.
• 1995 – A huge attention is drawn towards environmental themes in South Africa
• 1996 - A spotlight on the link between human and environmental rights.
• 1998 - “For Life on Earth – Save our Seas” - highlights threats to marine ecosystems
• 2000 - UNEP launches a World Environment Day website - “The Environment Millennium
– Time to Act,”
• 2001 - “Connect with the World Wide Web of Life,” Host is Italy
• 2002 – “Give the Earth a Chance”
• 2003 - “Water – Two Billion People are Dying for It!”
• 2004 – “Wanted! Seas and Oceans - Dead or Alive?”
• 2005 - “Green Cities: Plan for the Planet.”
• 2006 - “Deserts and Desertification – Don’t Desert Drylands!”
