What is leadership?
 Simply put, it is the ability to influence, motivate, and/or enable
other to contribute to the effectiveness and success of an
organization
 It is also an attitude that influences the environment around us
+
Leadership Development
 There are 5 levels of leadership
 Position/Rights
 Permission/Relationship
 Production/Results
 People Development/Reproduction
 Personhood/Respect
+
Leadership Development
 Five levels of leadership
 Position
 Rights – People follow because they have to
 Influences does not extend beyond job description
 A real leader knows the difference between being the boss and
being a leader…
+
Leadership Development
 Boss drives workers; leader coaches them
 Boss depends on authority; leader depends on goodwill
 Boss inspires fear; leader inspires enthusiasm
 Boss says “I”; leader says “We”
 Boss fixes blame for breakdown; leader fixes the breakdown
+
Leadership Development
 Five levels of leadership
 Permission
 Relationships – People follow because they want to
 People follow beyond stated authority
 Time, energy, and focus are places on the individual’s needs and
desires
 Increase success of those around you
 Empathize
 Deal wisely with difficult people
+
Leadership Development
 Five levels of leadership
 Production
 Results – people follow because of what you have done for the
organization or movement
 Initiate and accept responsibility for growth/achievements
 Develop accountability, INCLUDING YOURSELF!
 Communicate strategy and vision – externally and internally
 Make the difficult decisions that make the difference
 People get together to accomplish a purpose – should include
relationships but goal and tasks should be focus
+
Leadership Development
 Five levels of leadership
 People Development
 Reproduction – people follow because of what you have done for
them
 Long-range objectives and growth for team
 Develop their leadership skills – includes delegating
responsibility
 A leader is great, not because of her/his power, but because of
her/his ability to empower others
 Recognition people are the most valuable asset
 Be a model for others to follow
+
Leadership Development
 Five levels of leadership
 Personhood
 Respect
 People follow because of who you are and what your represent
 Followers are loyal and seek you out
 Mentored and molded others over time
+
Leadership Development
 Integrity
 The most important aspect of leadership (or at least it should be!)
 Remember – it is not what we do, but how we do it that defines
integrity
 Important for beliefs to be mirrored by our actions because:
 Build trust
 Allows for high standards
 Creates credibility, not just image of cleverness
+
Leadership Development
 Profiles of leaders in trouble
 Poor understanding of people (lack of empathy/awareness)
 No imagination ( follows the script)
 Brings personal problems into work
 Blames others for own mistakes
 Disorganized
 Feels overly confident
 Unstable – flies into rages
 Too risk avoidant
 Inflexible
 Defensive
 Lacks teamwork skills
 Fights change
+
Leadership Development
 So, why do we fight change?
 The change was not initiated by the individual
 Fear of unknown
 Reason for change unclear
 Rewards for change don’t match effort
 Satisfied with status quo
 Lack of respect for leader
 Requires sacrifice
 Tradition considered more important than adaptation
+
Leadership Development
 Problem Solving
 Four reasons why people do not match the expectations of
leaders
 They don’t know what they should do
 They don’t know how they should do it
 They don’t know why they should do it
 Sometimes, obstacles beyond their control
+
Leadership Development
 Attitude
 Attitude is the most important asset of a leader
 “Life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I
react.” – Charles Swindoll
+
Leadership Development
 As leaders, you need to do the following:
 Give credit for suggestions (even the really good ones!)
 Correct grievances
 Encourage others
 Don’t criticize people in front of others
 Ask other’s opinions
 Give positive feedback when good work is done
 Don’t show favoritism!!!!!
