Focus Group Results
1. Focus Group Results –
I carried out a focus group so that I would get a look into what
my target market like and want to see on the front cover of a
music magazine, the inside of it and the colours, fonts and
layout.
The first question I asked was: Which of the following artist or
band would you most like to see as a cover artist and why?
From asking this question they said that they would prefer to
see and for this they said either: Arctic Monkeys, Jake Bugg
and Mumford and Sons because they appeal to my target
audience, favourite artists and play music in which they like to
listen to.
I then asked: Looking at the three front covers below, which
image do you prefer and why? All of my target audience said
they prefer the first one because the image of Florence really
captures her attention because she is looking directly into the
camera. However, one girl said she didn’t like any of them
because they are stereotypical images of the same race good
looking people which doesn’t show a wider range of ethnicity.
After asking what image they want to see I then decided to ask
about the layout in which they prefer. Weather they want a
structured layout or a not structured one. Unsurprisingly all my
focus group said they would much rather a structured one
because it flows much better than the second one.
Because the inside information in a magazine is very important
I then decided to ask the question: What information would
you like to feature in the magazine and why? I gave them a list
of things to choose from which are: posters, interviews,
personal profiles, information up and coming gigs and festivals
2. and 2 for 1 offers. My results from this were that they would
like personal profiles because they want to get to know the
artist/ band not just their music and information about up and
coming gigs and festivals so they can buy the tickets before
they actually sell out. Also, posters so they can admire a
certain band or artist.
Now I have got the information about the type or image they
want, the layout of the page and what information features
within the magazine I then asked: What colours most attract
you to a magazine and why? From this my focus group said
that they would like to see colours like red to catch their
attention and vivid colours so it’s not boring.
From going through my results of what my target market have
said they like best in an indie magazine, I got a really good
idea in how do develop my music magazine. I now know how
to structure the layout of my magazine, what fonts and colours
to use and what cover artists to include. As a result of this, I
have a good idea in how I want to set out my music magazine
so that it is successful.
