Climate School Alanya HEP University lecture 1
1. CLIMATE CHANGE REALITY
Why we need a fast worldwide
mobilization to stop Climate Change
Lecture 1 of 8
HEP University, Alanya, November 2015
The Climate School / Hans Jørgen Rasmussen
2. Climate School Principles
Dialogue – focus on the students / participants
Lectures – science based knowledge / updated facts
Movies – to speed up learning and make it more
interesting
Building network / caring for each other
Building the learning process together
One step at a time
3. How many of you have
not had any contact
with
”The Climate School”
before?
7. From every group:
What do you THINK about Global Warming
What do you FEEL about Global Warming
What is the most important question you have
about Global Warming
One thought
One feeling
One question
8. Main structure of
The Climate School
One lecture today
3-4 months with self studies
7 lectures over a 7 week period beginning March
2016
Hopefully:
Ending with discussion of how we – individually
and collectively can take action on climate based
on what we now know.
17. People who totally deny
man-made climate change still
exist
- but their numbers are
decreasing rapidly
18. 3 types of denial:
INTELLECTUAL
You reject that climate change is happening and
that it´s man-made
EMOTIONAL
You accept climate change being real and man-
made, but the acceptance stays in your head. It
doesn´t affect you emotionally, does not fill your
body, does not reach your stomach and your heart.
POLITICAL
You recognize climate change, you are strongly
affected emotionally by it, but that does not lead you
to become politically active.
35. This we know now:
Business as usual leads to disaster
Population growth cannot go on
Consumption growth cannot go on
We must change from a growth – based
philosophy to a philosophy based ”enoughness”
and nature´s limited ressources.
It can be called ”ecological economy” or ”circular
economy”

39. Different future Scenarios
Do we succeed in staying below 2 degrees
celcius temperature rise?
What if we do not succeed in that?
A Post Carbon Society – what will it look like?
Best adaptation strategies: The transition
movement?
40. Different future Scenarios
Future energy supply?
How much will we be able to reduce our energy
demand?
Will we have enough sun and wind energy?
Wil we be able to build enough solar energy
plants, wind mills and other other forms of
renewable sites to cover the ever growing
demand? And how about storage and
transportation of energy
Will we need nuclear energy – temporarily or
permanently?

These are the lecture videos from the free UBC
course Climate Literacy: Navigating Climate
Change Conversations, which tackles the
scientific and socio-political dimensions of
climate change. This course introduces the
basics of the climate system, models and
predictions, human and natural impacts,
mitigative and adaptive responses, and the
evolution of climate policy.
53. Which role can Alanya HEP University have in this?
Becoming the first University in Turkey with a ”Faculty of
Sustainable Future”?
Integrating a combination of:
Local management
Building sustainable architecture
Including Climate Change in its way of thinking
The Climate School could be an integral part of this –
educating teachers from other faculties about the facts
of Climate Change
Basis for a general awarenessraising process in Turkey
about this
54. To all students in The
Climate School:
Let us be friends on Facebook. There I publish a lot of
news about climate change. You find me here:
https://www.facebook.com/hjrasmus
Use The Climate Cinema: http://theclimatecinema.org
to find inspiration.
Tell your friends and fellow students about this so that
we will have a full auditorium next time we meet
Feel free to share this slideshow with everybody!
55. If you have comments or questions:
Send me an email !
I´m looking very much forward to seeing you again for
the next lecture March 2016!
