После торжественного открытия 8 мая в кинотеатре KSuns, в котором
приняли участие посол Китая в Латвии Ян Гуоцян с супругой,
представители латвийского МИДа, кинематографисты и журналисты, и
показа «Великого мастера» (2013) режиссёра Вонг Кар Вая в Риге
продолжается первый фестиваль китайского кино. Сеансы на
оригинальном китайском с английскими субтитрами проходят по
вторникам в мульфункциональном культурном центре Happy Art Museum
(7-й уровень ТЦ Galleria Riga, ул. Дзирнаву, 67).

"The Grandmaster" is a true representation of Chinese Kungfu films, actually, Kungfu is
an art. There is more than 120 kinds of Kungfu in China, everyone has different
techniques and skills, but it is a means.The final purpose is lying down or standing, only
standing is right.
Actually, the story reveals a lot of people are likely to be a master, but because of
changing time or his choice, ultimately the fate is different. Such as Gong, she finally
chose to stay in her own world.
I has prepared this movie for a decade, because I enjoy the process of adhering to high
quality, but my life is limited, otherwise I will always prepare it. I am looking forward to
showing the beauty of Chinese Kungfu and Chinese people to audiences.

Synopsis
The age background of this story is from the liberation of Tibet in 1950s to the 1980s. It
takes place in Lhasa Tibet, telling the fate between Tenzin, childe of the manor, and
Phurbu, serf of Tenzin.
Tenzin and Phurbu live and grow in the same manor. Good friends as they are, with a
huge gap between their identities and families, however, these two good friends become
enemies as time changes. Because of a guilt Tenzin commits, Phurbu, his serf, almost
loses his life.
In the end, as a substitute of Tenzin, Phurbu starts his life as a lama in the temple in the
name of Tenzin. All chant he makes, and all blessings he prays, shall own by Tenzin.
Then come the liberation army, and they are greeted with great welcome by the serfs .
People's souls start to change. The serfs gain their dignity and equality.
Director’s Statement
Through this story we want to express that the liberation of Tibet is the liberation of all
people instead of a few. If the liberation of the serfs is at the material level and the basic
human rights, then to all those who will to accept the new age, the biggest liberation is
that of inner souls, no matter what their identities are.
From this point, the liberation of Tibet is that of all people, liberation from laggard and
decayed consciousness.
During the process of making this film, all the writers, directors and producers wish there
shall be some deepening and breakthrough among films at the same theme. To realize
that, instead of using the simple dichotomous method, we respect the complexity of the
history of Tibet, and with a sufficient knowledge of Tibet history, we try to present such
complexity by the fate of people in the film.
Anyway, we hope a breakthrough can be achieved in this native main stream film on
presenting the richness of history and the complexity of social development, and by doing
that the film can be more convincing under the sight of global world so as to gain a
powerful say on the issue of Tibet around the world.

perfectionist who pay more attentionto detail. As my first directorial debut, this experience
will benefit me for all my life, as youth.

(SUN Liang), the top investigative reporter, is persuaded by his editor-in-chief to write a
story about him, even though HUA Wei, from past experience, is suspicious of such
"heroes". He makes a series of interview and investigation,and turns over all of Wan-
zhong's personal diaries, 68 volumes detailing 14 years of being a detective. Gradually a
portrait of the man emerges.
Director’s Statement
In this film I used the "Hollywood way" of thriller and action films to shoot scenes of
murder and investigation, "documentary" to labor dispute, "Kar Wai WONG's romance" to
dignified scenes, "Antonioni's style" to the love and family life between HAO Wan-zhong
and his wife. On the other hand, structure and time are intertwined in this film. There is a
scene intersected with five shots that happen in different times. The structure is irregular,
yet the emotions are kept tight and coherent.
I am aware of doing that way could be a big risk, and may screw up in the end. But only
the abundance of film languages can present the current reality of China within which a
Chinese man is confronted, as well as the complicated character of a man who you
respect and love, although who is imperfect and you may feel pity for.

This film is adapted from the ancient Chinese fantasy novel Journey to the West. The

destroyed.
Nuwa (Goddess of Works) smelt spars to mend the Heaven. A small stones fell down on
the earth and became a monkey. The monkey got Patriarch Subodhi's teaching and was
given a name of Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong came to the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits
and made himself the Monkey King.
At the same time, the Buffalo Demon King decided to come back, he incited the Money
King to havoc in heaven by using the Monkey King's relationship with his childhood
sweetheart, and colluded with the Erlang to destruct the south gate of the Heaven, the
Monkey King's havoc was in sight, but Heaven was in danger.
Director’s Statement
When I was reading the famous book "Journey to the West", I was thinking what was the
point impressed me most? In fact, everyone saw different point in the "Journey to the
West". But the point impressed me was the reason why Monkey King, a hero with so
much ability, is willingly to achieve their goal step by step. I saw the true growth Monkey
King.
From my view, the remake of the classic is not to figure out the author's thinking. I will
never know the blueprint of the author Mr. WU Cheng-en . We should show how we treat
the classic "Journey to the West ". We do not want to be far away with the audience.
The film is actually presenting my ideal world. I'm not WU Cheng-en, I am certainly not as
good as his imagination, but I am trying to pass on this classic.

This film is adopted from a Internet novel, which begins from a tiny social events, displays
the different characters of different classpeople's real life, I tried my best to focus on
realistic problems today, reflect the era of great transformation of values. This is my first
time to focus on women. It shows women is sensitiveby nature, and five women from the
different age, identity and status grow up secondary in the face of adversity. I hope it can
can be thoughtful.
