The report examined patent activity by Canadian researchers and institutions globally between 2011-2017. It found that Canadian AI patent activity grew at 31% annually in this period. While Canadian organizations account for under 1% of global institutional patents, Canadian researchers specialize in certain AI applications compared to American counterparts. The presentation broke down patent trends and concentrations by region, gender, and sector.

INTRODUCTION
• Last week, CIPO published its latest IP Analytics report: Processing Artificial Intelligence: Highlighting the Canadian patent landscape
• In January 2019, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published the first edition of its Technology Trends report focusing on
Artificial Intelligence (AI).
• The United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) subsequently published its own version of this analysis in June 2019, while adopting a
narrower definition of AI.
• PIRO has adopted the UKIPO’s search strategy for this report while applying WIPO’s AI taxonomy to categorize the patent data.
• The report focuses on inventions patented globally by Canadian researchers and institutions, in contrast to the findings presented in WIPO’s
report, which focuses on patent activity based on office of filing.
